1. Understanding Musical Elements |
Every case study starts with the same question: which musical elements can I hear? The key building blocks include dynamics, articulation, tempo, metre, rhythm, melody, harmony, tonality, texture, instrumentation and timbre, and structure.
Think of these elements as ingredients in a recipe. A Baroque concerto, a Romantic song and a 20th‑century film theme can all be described using the same vocabulary, but the way they are combined gives each work its unique character.
During a case study, you will often be asked to comment on the mood, the style and the historical context, but always support your observations with precise musical evidence drawn from these elements.
2. Melody and Harmony Analysis |
Melody is the tune you can hum. Start by looking at the shape of the melody: does it move by step (conjunct) or by leap (disjunct)? Is the range wide or narrow? Look for sequences, repetition and ornamentation such as trills or turns.
Harmony describes the chords that support the melody. In tonal music, chords are often built on the first (I), fourth (IV) and fifth (V) notes of the scale. Cadences – perfect V–I, plagal IV–I, imperfect I–V or interrupted V–vi – give punctuation to phrases.
终止式——正格终止 V–I,变格终止 IV–I,半终止 I–V 或阻碍终止 V–vi——为乐句提供标点。
When analysing a set work, circle any chromatic notes (notes outside the key) and ask yourself why the composer introduced them – perhaps to create tension or colour.
3. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |
Rhythm gives music its lifelike pulse. Identify the metre: is it duple, triple or quadruple? Simple or compound? Use Italian tempo markings such as Allegro (fast), Andante (walking pace) or Adagio (slow) to pinpoint the speed.
使用 Allegro(快板)、Andante(行板)或 Adagio(柔板)等意大利速度标记来精确描述快慢。
Look out for syncopation, where accents fall on weak beats, and for dotted rhythms that create a skipping feel. A sudden pause (fermata) or a change from straight to swung quavers can drastically alter the character.
In your case study notes, always describe how rhythm interacts with the other elements: a lively syncopated melody over a steady bass creates a very different effect from a slow, even rhythm in all parts.
4. Texture and Timbre |
Texture refers to how the musical lines are layered. The main types you need to recognise are monophonic (a single unaccompanied line), homophonic (melody with chordal accompaniment), polyphonic (two or more independent lines woven together) and heterophonic (simultaneous variations of one melody).
Timbre, or tone colour, is all about the sound quality of the instruments or voices. Describe whether the sound is bright, dark, nasal, breathy, percussive or smooth. Mention the performing forces: a string quartet, a full symphony orchestra, a big band, a choir.
A sudden change in texture – for example, from a full tutti to a solo passage – is a deliberate dramatic gesture. In any case study, note these contrasts and consider why the composer created them.
5. Form and Structure |
Understanding the architecture of a piece helps you follow the composer's story. Common classical forms include binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA), theme and variations, and sonata form (exposition, development, recapitulation).
In vocal music, look for strophic form (same music for each verse) or through‑composed (new music throughout). Pop songs often use verse‑chorus structure or a 12‑bar blues pattern based on chords I, IV and V.
When you write about structure, draw a simple diagram of the sections, noting key changes, melodic returns and any coda or introduction. This visual map will make your written answer far clearer.
6. Dynamics and Articulation |
Dynamics indicate volume. The most common Italian terms are pianissimo (pp, very soft), piano (p), mezzo piano (mp), mezzo forte (mf), forte (f) and fortissimo (ff, very loud). Gradual changes include crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo (getting softer).
最常见的意大利术语有 pianissimo(pp,极弱)、piano(p)、mezzo piano(mp)、mezzo forte(mf)、forte(f)和 fortissimo(ff,极强)。
Articulation tells you how individual notes are attacked. Legato means smooth and connected, staccato means short and detached, and accents (> or sfz) bring sudden emphasis. Slurs, tenuto marks and pizzicato for strings all shape the expression.
In your case study, note how dynamics and articulation work together. A crescendo combined with accented staccato quavers can produce a thrilling, energetic climax.
7. Case Study: Baroque Concerto – Vivaldi 'Spring' |
Let us apply the toolkit to the first movement of Vivaldi's 'Spring' from The Four Seasons. The key is E major, and the tempo marking is Allegro, giving a bright, joyful feel. The metre is a lively 4/4, driven by a rhythmic pattern often called a 'motor rhythm'.
The texture alternates between homophonic ritornelli played by the full string orchestra and solo violin episodes that imitate birdsong and babbling brooks. This contrast between tutti and solo is typical of the Baroque concerto grosso.
Harmonically, Vivaldi relies heavily on tonic and dominant chords, with clear perfect cadences that define the phrases. Decorative trills and rapid scales create a sense of nature bursting into life.
8. Case Study: Classical Symphony – Haydn 'Surprise' |
The second movement of Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G major provides a masterclass in simplicity and humour. The theme is presented pianissimo in a homophonic texture, with the strings playing staccato and legato contrasts.
The famous 'surprise' is a sudden fortissimo chord from the full orchestra right at the end of a quiet phrase. Haydn then repeats the trick, but now the listener is alert – a perfect example of playfulness through dynamics and articulation.
The movement is in theme‑and‑variations form. Each variation changes one or two elements while keeping the overall shape: a countermelody in the violins, a shift to minor tonality, a faster rhythmic figure. Tracking these changes sharpens your appraising skills enormously.
9. Case Study: Romantic Song – Schubert 'Der Erlkönig' |
Schubert’s 'Erlkönig' is a dramatic through‑composed Lied for voice and piano. The piano opens with a rapid, relentless octave motif that suggests galloping hooves, setting a breathless tempo and a dark G minor tonality.
The singer portrays four characters – narrator, father, child and Erlking – by using different vocal timbres and pitch ranges. Listen for how the child’s cries become higher and more desperate each time, producing an agonising rise in tension.
Harmonically, Schubert uses stark contrasts: the Erlking’s seductive lines are in a sunny B♭ major, while the child’s final scream lands on a dissonant diminished chord. The piece ends with a broken spoken phrase and a stark perfect cadence in G minor.
10. Case Study: 20th‑Century Fusion – 'Take Five' | 案例分析:二十世纪融合作品——《Take Five》
Dave Brubeck’s 'Take Five', written by Paul Desmond, is a landmark in jazz experimentation. The most immediately recognisable element is the metre: 5/4, which gives the piece its cool, off‑kilter groove. The drummer keeps a steady ride cymbal pattern while lightly accenting the offbeats.
The melody, played by alto saxophone, is built on a bluesy minor scale and sits over a repeating two‑chord vamp in E♭ minor. The texture is homophonic: the sax carries the tune while piano, bass and drums provide the harmonic and rhythmic backdrop.
In the improvised solo section, the texture becomes more polyphonic as the drummer and pianist interject ideas. Dynamics remain smooth and subtle throughout, with the saxophone’s warm timbre and legato phrasing creating a laid‑back, sophisticated atmosphere.
11. Practical Exercise: Listening and Describing |
Take an unfamiliar extract – perhaps a short piece by Copland or a film cue by John Williams – and play it through three times. On the first listening, jot down what you notice about dynamics, tempo and instrumentation. On the second, focus on melody and texture. On the third, try to identify structure and tonality.
Now write a paragraph using the DART method: Describe, Analyse, Relate, and give your Tasteful judgement. For example: 'The piece begins with a soft, breathy flute melody over shimmering strings (describe). The melody rises stepwise and is accompanied by a simple I–IV ostinato (analyse). This creates a mysterious opening that relates to the film’s dream scene (relate). I find the atmosphere captivating and effective (tasteful judgement).'
Practising this structure repeatedly will train you to think like an examiner, giving you confidence in the listening paper.
12. Exam Tips and Summary |
In the OCR paper, always read the question stem carefully – it often tells you which element to comment on. Manage your time: spend roughly one minute per mark. Never leave a blank; even a single correct observation earns credit.
Build a glossary of precise Italian terms and learn to spell them confidently. Use comparative language: 'louder than', 'a thicker texture', 'the rhythm becomes more syncopated'. Accuracy and detail are rewarded over vague statements like 'it sounds nice'.
Finally, remember that case studies are not just about ticking boxes. The more you practise listening with curiosity, connecting the elements to the composer’s intentions, the deeper your musical understanding will become. This is the key to both exam success and a lifelong love of music.
