1. The Particle Model and States of Matter | 粒子模型与物质状态
All matter is made up of tiny particles that are constantly moving. The way these particles are arranged and how they move determines whether a substance is a solid, a liquid or a gas. In solids, particles are packed closely in a fixed pattern and can only vibrate; in liquids, particles are close but can slide past each other; in gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions.
所有物质都由不断运动的微小粒子构成。粒子的排列方式与运动方式决定了物质是固体、液体还是气体。固体中粒子紧密排列且固定在位置上,只能振动;液体中粒子相距较近但可以滑动;气体中粒子相距很远且快速向四面八方运动。
The particle model explains changes of state: melting, freezing, boiling, condensing and sublimation. When a solid is heated, particles gain energy and vibrate more, eventually overcoming the forces holding them in place, which leads to melting. Further heating gives particles enough energy to escape the liquid’s surface – this is boiling. The reverse processes release energy.
粒子模型可解释物态变化:熔化、凝固、沸腾、冷凝和升华。固体受热时粒子获得能量,振动加剧,最终克服束缚力而熔化。继续加热使粒子获得足够能量从液体表面逸出——这就是沸腾。逆向过程则释放能量。
2. Atoms, Elements and Compounds | 原子、元素与化合物
An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains its chemical properties. An element consists of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. A compound is formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in fixed proportions, resulting in a substance with properties different from its constituent elements.
原子是保持元素化学性质的最小单元。元素仅由一种原子组成,无法通过化学方法分解成更简单的物质。化合物由两种或多种不同元素以固定比例化合而成,其性质与组成元素截然不同。
Every element is represented by a one- or two-letter symbol, such as O for oxygen, Fe for iron. Compounds are represented by chemical formulae, for example H₂O for water and CO₂ for carbon dioxide. It is essential to distinguish between mixtures (which are not chemically combined) and compounds (which are).
每种元素用一个或两个字母的符号表示,如 O 代表氧,Fe 代表铁。化合物用化学式表示,例如水是 H₂O,二氧化碳是 CO₂。准确区分混合物(未发生化学结合)和化合物(发生了化学结合)非常重要。
3. Inside the Atom: Protons, Neutrons and Electrons | 原子内部:质子、中子与电子
Atoms are composed of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons moving in shells. Protons carry a positive charge (+1), neutrons are neutral, and electrons carry a negative charge (−1). Almost all the mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus.
原子由包含质子和中子的原子核以及绕核运动的电子构成。质子带正电荷 (+1),中子不带电,电子带负电荷 (−1)。原子几乎全部质量都集中在原子核上。
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in the nucleus, which determines the identity of the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons plus neutrons. In a neutral atom the number of electrons equals the number of protons. Ions form when atoms gain or lose electrons, creating charged particles such as Na⁺ and Cl⁻.
原子序数 (Z) 是原子核内的质子数,决定了元素的种类。质量数 (A) 是质子与中子数之和。中性原子中电子数等于质子数。当原子得到或失去电子时形成离子,产生如 Na⁺ 和 Cl⁻ 这样的带电粒子。
A = Z + N (where N is the neutron number)
A = Z + N (N 为中子数)
4. The Periodic Table – Organising the Elements | 元素周期表——元素的组织
The modern periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Rows are called periods; columns are called groups. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.
现代周期表按原子序数递增顺序排列元素。横排称为周期,纵列称为族。同一族元素化学性质相似,因为它们最外层电子数相同。
Metals are found on the left and centre of the table, while non-metals are on the right. Group 1 contains the alkali metals, which are highly reactive and stored under oil. Group 7 holds the halogens, reactive non-metals. Group 0 (or 8) contains the noble gases, which are extremely unreactive due to their full outer shells. Trends in reactivity can be predicted from the table: for metals, reactivity generally increases down a group; for non-metals, it decreases.
金属位于周期表的左侧和中间,非金属在右侧。第 1 族是碱金属,反应性强且保存在油中。第 7 族是卤素,为活泼非金属。第 0 族(或第 8 族)是稀有气体,由于最外层电子已满,几乎不反应。利用周期表可以预测反应性递变规律:金属在族内从上到下反应性增强,非金属则减弱。
5. Chemical Reactions and Conservation of Mass | 化学反应与质量守恒
In a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged to form new substances, but no atoms are created or destroyed. This is the law of conservation of mass: the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. Reactions can be represented by word equations and then by balanced symbol equations.
在化学反应中,原子重新排列形成新物质,但原子不会被创造或毁灭。这就是质量守恒定律:反应物的总质量等于生成物的总质量。反应可以用文字方程式表示,进而用配平的符号方程式表示。
H₂O. State symbols are often added: (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas and (aq) for aqueous solution. Balancing equations ensures that the number of atoms of each element is identical on both sides.
例如,氢气与氧气反应生成水:2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O。通常会加上状态符号:(s) 表示固体,(l) 表示液体,(g) 表示气体,(aq) 表示水溶液。配平方程式可以保证两边各元素的原子数目相等。
Word equation: hydrogen + oxygen → water
文字方程式:氢气 + 氧气 → 水
Balanced: 2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l)
配平方程式:2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l)
6. Acids, Alkalis and the pH Scale | 酸、碱与 pH 值
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. Common acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). Alkalis are soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
酸是溶于水时释放氢离子 (H⁺) 的物质。常见酸包括盐酸 (HCl)、硫酸 (H₂SO₄) 和硝酸 (HNO₃)。碱是可溶的氢氧化物,溶于水时释放氢氧根离子 (OH⁻),例如氢氧化钠 (NaOH)。
alkaline. Universal indicator or litmus paper can be used to estimate pH. A neutralisation reaction occurs when an acid reacts with an alkali, producing a salt and water: H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O.
pH 值范围是 0 到 14,用于衡量溶液的酸碱度。pH 小于 7 为酸性,等于 7 为中性,大于 7 为碱性。可使用通用指示剂或石蕊试纸测定 pH。酸与碱发生中和反应,生成盐和水:H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O。
Neutralisation is vital in everyday contexts: treating indigestion with antacids, controlling soil acidity in agriculture, and treating acidic industrial waste. The salt produced depends on the acid and the metal or base used, e.g. hydrochloric acid gives chlorides, sulfuric acid gives sulfates.
中和反应在日常生活中有广泛应用:用抗酸剂治疗胃酸过多、农业中调节土壤酸度、处理酸性工业废水等。生成的盐取决于所用的酸和金属或碱,例如盐酸生成氯化物,硫酸生成硫酸盐。
7. Reactivity of Metals | 金属的反应性
Metals differ in their tendency to undergo chemical reactions. The reactivity series arranges metals from most reactive to least reactive, based on their reactions with water, dilute acids and oxygen. Potassium, sodium and calcium react vigorously with cold water; magnesium reacts slowly with water but vigorously with steam; zinc and iron react with dilute acids; copper, silver and gold show very low reactivity.
金属发生化学反应的倾向各不相同。反应性顺序根据金属与水、稀酸和氧气的反应排列,从最活泼到最不活泼。钾、钠、钙与冷水剧烈反应;镁与水反应缓慢但与蒸汽反应剧烈;锌和铁与稀酸反应;铜、银、金的反应性极低。
: Mg + CuSO₄ → MgSO₄ + Cu. The reactivity series is essential for choosing extraction methods: metals above carbon are extracted by electrolysis, those below can be extracted by reduction with carbon.
更活泼的金属能把较不活泼的金属从其化合物中置换出来。例如,镁能从硫酸铜溶液中置换出铜:Mg + CuSO₄ → MgSO₄ + Cu。反应性顺序对于选择金属提取方法至关重要:大于碳的金属用电解法提取,小于碳的可用碳还原。
Reactivity: K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > Cu > Ag > Au
反应性顺序:K > Na > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > Cu > Ag > Au
8. Energy Changes in Chemical Reactions | 化学反应中的能量变化
Chemical reactions involve energy transfers. Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings, usually in the form of heat, causing a temperature rise. Examples include combustion, respiration and neutralisation. Endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings, leading to a temperature drop. Photosynthesis and the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate are typical endothermic processes.
化学反应伴随着能量转移。放热反应向环境释放能量,通常以热的形式,导致温度升高,例如燃烧、呼吸作用和中和反应。吸热反应从环境吸收能量,导致温度下降,光合作用和碳酸钙的热分解是典型的吸热过程。
During a reaction, bonds in the reactants must be broken (this requires energy) and new bonds form in the products (this releases energy). If more energy is released than absorbed, the reaction is exothermic overall. Reaction profiles are diagrams that show the energy change, with the activation energy being the minimum energy needed to start the reaction.
反应过程中,反应物的化学键断裂需要吸收能量,而生成物的新键形成则释放能量。如果释放的能量大于吸收的能量,整体为放热反应。反应进程图可直观展示能量变化,其中活化能是启动反应的最低能量。
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O + energy (exothermic)
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O + 能量 (放热)
