Each formula captures one fundamental idea that you can apply to films, advertisements, magazines, newspapers, video games, social media posts and more. Use it before a test, before a written assessment, or whenever you need to slow down and ask the right analytical questions.
Remember: these formulas are not mathematics. They are thinking tools. A formula is useful only when you apply it to a specific text and explain the effect on a specific audience. Always move from the formula to the evidence, and from the evidence to the meaning.
1. The Semiotic Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified |
In media studies, a sign is the smallest unit of meaning. According to semiotics, every sign is made of two parts: the signifier, which is the physical form you can see, hear or touch (a word, an image, a colour, a sound or a gesture), and the signified, which is the mental concept that the signifier brings to mind.
Sign = Signifier + Signified
The relationship between signifier and signified is usually arbitrary and depends on cultural convention. Nothing about the four letters c-a-t makes them mean a small furry animal; English speakers simply agree that they do. This is why the same signifier can carry different meanings in different cultures, and why media producers rely on shared conventions to communicate quickly.
A classic example is a red rose: the signifier is the image of the flower, and the signified is romance, love or passion. In an advertisement, the same red rose placed next to a bottle of perfume shifts its signified again, perhaps towards luxury, femininity or celebration.
When you analyse a media text, ask three questions: what are the signs, and how do the signifiers create the intended meaning, and which cultural conventions must the audience share in order to read that meaning? These three questions turn a description into an analysis.
2. The Media Triangle Formula: Text + Audience + Institution |
No media text exists on its own. Every text is produced by an institution, aimed at an audience, and made out of a shared language of signs. The media triangle keeps all three in view at once, which is exactly what examiners want to see.
Media Text ⇌ Audience ⇌ Institution
- Text — the product itself: genre, codes, narrative, representation, style.
- Audience — who consumes it, how they interpret it, and what pleasure or information they take from it.
- Institution — the company, broadcaster, platform or creator, plus money, regulation, technology and ideology.
The double arrow matters. Institutions shape texts, texts target audiences, and audiences respond in ways that feed back into what institutions produce next. A streaming service cancels a show because the audience data, not the artistic quality alone, decides its future.
3. The MIGRAIN Analysis Formula | MIGRAIN
MIGRAIN is a seven-part checklist that guarantees you never run out of things to say about a text. Each letter stands for a different analytical angle, and together they cover almost every question an examiner can ask about a media product.
| Letter | English |
|---|---|---|
| M | Media Language |
| I | Ideology and Values |
| G | Genre |
| R | Representation |
| A | Audience |
| I | Institution |
| N | Narrative |
Analysis Quality = M + I + G + R + A + I + N
分析质量 = M + I + G + R + A + I + N
Use MIGRAIN before writing, not instead of writing. Jot one short note under each letter in two or three minutes, then choose the two or three letters that give the richest answers for that particular text. Never simply list all seven with no evidence; depth beats coverage.
4. The Denotation and Connotation Formula: Meaning = Denotation + Connotation |
Denotation is the literal, dictionary-level meaning of a sign: what is actually there. Connotation is the associated, suggested or emotional meaning: what the sign makes the audience feel or think. Strong analysis always moves from one to the other.
Meaning = Denotation + Connotation
In a charity advertisement, the denotation is a single tear on a child's cheek. The connotation might be helplessness, urgency and moral guilt, which is precisely what motivates the audience to donate. Same image, two layers of meaning.
Colour works the same way. Denotation: the background is red. Connotation: danger, passion, anger or celebration, depending on the genre and the culture. Notice that the connotation is never fixed; it is produced by context, by anchorage and by audience knowledge.
5. The Narrative Formula: Equilibrium → Disruption → New Equilibrium |
Todorov argued that most stories follow a five-stage pattern that moves from order, through chaos, back to a changed order. This "narrative theorem" is short enough to memorise and flexible enough to fit almost any film, trailer or advertisement.
Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equilibrium
- Equilibrium: the world is stable and normal.
- Disruption: an event disturbs that order.
- Recognition: characters realise the problem matters.
- Repair: action is taken to solve it.
- New Equilibrium: order returns, but never exactly as before.
Advertisements compress this into thirty seconds: happy family (equilibrium), problem appears (disruption), product arrives (repair), happy family again (new equilibrium). Spotting the pattern helps you explain how a text manipulates desire and relief.
6. The Character Function Formula (Propp) |
Propp studied hundreds of folk tales and found that the same eight character roles keep returning, no matter how different the stories seem. These roles are functions, not personalities: one character can perform more than one function, and a function can be shared.
tory = Villain + Dispatcher + Donor + Helper + Hero + False Hero + Princess/Prize + Father
In a superhero film, the villain creates the disruption, the mentor dispatches and donates the special knowledge, the best friend helps, the hero struggles, and the false hero briefly takes credit. Recognising these functions lets you compare texts that look completely different and explain why audiences find them satisfying.
Be careful: the princess or prize role is not always a woman, and modern texts often subvert these functions deliberately. Noticing the subversion is often a higher-level point than simply naming the function.
7. The Binary Opposition Formula: Meaning = A versus B | 二元对立公式:意义 = A 对 B
Levi-Strauss suggested that human beings understand the world through pairs of opposites. Media texts use the same trick: they place two ideas side by side so that each one defines the other.
Meaning = A versus B (good/evil, young/old, us/them)
意义 = A 对 B(善/恶、年轻/年老、我们/他们)
In a news bulletin, a peaceful suburb may be edited next to a chaotic city street. Neither image alone says much; together they build a clear ideological message about safety, class and belonging. In a film poster, dark and light areas often carry the same opposition visually.
Useful opposition pairs to look for: nature/culture, inside/outside, past/future, normal/strange, individual/group. Then ask whose side the text takes, because binary opposition is never neutral.
8. The Representation Formula: Representation = Selection × Construction × Anchorage |
Representation is not a mirror of reality; it is a version of reality built from choices. This formula shows the three stages through which a group, place or idea is represented on screen or on the page.
Representation = Selection × Construction × Anchorage
- Selection: what is included and, crucially, what is left out.
- Construction: how camera, editing, sound, costume and language arrange what was selected.
- Anchorage: the caption, voice-over or headline that pins down meaning and removes ambiguity.
A group shown only in crowds and never in close-up is being represented through selection and framing. Add a caption that labels them as "migrants" rather than "families", and anchorage has done its ideological work. Stereotypes are simply representations that have been repeated so often they seem natural.
9. The Audience Formula: Uses and Gratifications |
Instead of asking what media do to audiences, uses and gratifications theory asks what audiences do with media. People are active: they choose texts in order to meet specific needs.
Audience Need = Information + Personal Identity + Social Interaction + Entertainment
- Information: learning, checking the news, solving a problem.
- Personal Identity: seeing your own life reflected, testing your values.
- Social Interaction: talking about a show with friends, feeling part of a fandom.
- Entertainment: escape, relaxation, excitement.
Different audiences use the same text for different gratifications. One viewer watches a reality show for entertainment; another watches it to join the conversation at school the next day. Both readings are valid, which is why audience research never produces a single answer.
10. The Encoding and Decoding Formula (Hall) |
Stuart Hall argued that producers encode a preferred meaning into a text, but audiences decode it in three possible ways. The meaning of a text is therefore negotiated, not simply delivered.
Decoding = Preferred / Negotiated / Oppositional
- Preferred reading: the audience accepts the meaning the producer intended.
- Negotiated reading: the audience accepts part of it but adapts another part to their own experience.
- Oppositional reading: the audience understands the intended meaning but rejects it.
An army recruitment advertisement may be decoded as patriotic duty (preferred), as an interesting career option (negotiated), or as propaganda to be resisted (oppositional). The same signifiers, three different meanings, because audiences bring different social positions and experiences to the screen.
11. The Media Language Formula: Technical Codes |
Media language is the toolbox that turns an idea into a text. The formula below lists the five code families you should name in any close analysis, and it works for film, television, print and online media alike.
Media Language = Camera + Sound + Mise-en-scène + Editing + Typography
| Code | What to look for | 观察要点 |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Shot size (CU, MS, LS), angle, movement, focus |
| Sound | Diegetic, non-diegetic, silence, volume, pace |
| Mise-en-scène | Lighting, colour, costume, setting, body language |
| Editing | Cut, dissolve, jump cut, pace, order of shots |
