📚 GCSE Health and Social Care: Caring for Others and Promoting Health | GCSE
GCSE Health and Social Care helps students understand the essentials of caring for other people and maintaining health. It combines knowledge with practical skills, encourages learners to take an active part in their lessons, and motivates them to become a positive force for wellbeing in their communities.
1. What the Course Covers |
The course explores the value of physical and mental health and shows how collective action can raise the health of a whole population. Learners meet real health issues such as diet and nutrition, exercise, and the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases.
Caring for others sits at the centre of the subject. Students practise building positive relationships and learn how to offer support and care to people who need it. This includes communicating with older people, disabled people and other groups with additional needs, and responding to a wide range of emotional and mental health difficulties.
The subject also stresses practice. Simulated scenarios are used to sharpen real skills such as first aid and CPR, and to build the confidence needed to handle emergencies and crises. Learners also study basic medical and hygiene standards so that care environments stay safe and clean.

2. Physical and Mental Health: The PIES Framework | 身心健康:PIES框架
Health is more than the absence of disease. A widely used working definition is that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and that definition shapes the way the course looks at every individual.
Health and social care professionals often summarise the whole person using the PIES framework: physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. A change in one area almost always affects the others, and exam questions frequently ask you to trace those knock-on effects.
Wellbeing = Physical + Intellectual + Emotional + Social
| PIES area | What it covers |
| Physical | Growth, fitness, diet, illness, mobility, sensory function |
| Intellectual | Language, memory, problem solving, education, decision making |
| Emotional | Self-esteem, attachment, coping with stress, mental health |
| Social | Relationships, roles, culture, inclusion, independence |
3. Growth and Development Across the Life Stages |
Development is normally studied across six life stages: infancy (0-2), early childhood (3-8), adolescence (9-18), early adulthood (19-45), middle adulthood (46-65) and later adulthood (65+). Each stage brings predictable physical changes and a different pattern of care needs.
Development is shaped by both nature and nurture: genetics, diet, housing, income, education, culture, relationships and access to healthcare. A strong exam answer explains how one named factor could affect at least two areas of PIES.
- Later adulthood often brings reduced mobility, hearing and sight loss, and the loss of partners or friends - so social and emotional support matters as much as physical care.
- Adolescence brings rapid physical change alongside identity, peer pressure and exam stress, which is why mental health topics appear so often in this unit.
4. Public Health and Collective Action |
Individual choices matter, but collective action changes whole populations. Vaccination programmes, clean water, safer roads, screening, food labelling and public health campaigns have added far more years to average life expectancy than any single medical treatment.
Nutrition is a core topic. Learners study the Eatwell Guide, the five-a-day message, energy balance, hidden sugars and fats, food labels, and the links between a poor diet and conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay and coronary heart disease.
Exercise is studied alongside diet. UK guidance recommends that adults aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, while children and young people aged 5-18 should average 60 minutes a day. Sedentary behaviour is now treated as a health risk in its own right.
Communicable diseases - including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, measles and influenza - are examined through their transmission routes, prevention measures and the stigma that surrounds them.
