1. Introduction to the New Specification |
From September 2025, the AQA Geography GCSE course you start in Year 10 will follow a refreshed specification. This new syllabus maintains the three-paper structure but refines the content to make it more contemporary, skills-focused, and globally relevant. The first examination for this updated course will be in May/June 2026, meaning your Year 11 assessments will look different from previous years' papers.
2. Why the Changes from 2026?
Geography is a dynamic subject that must keep pace with pressing issues such as climate change, sustainable urbanisation, and resource scarcity. The reformed AQA specification integrates more case studies on climate adaptation, cold environments under threat, and data-driven decision-making. Additionally, the exam board has wanted to strengthen the link between fieldwork skills and final assessment, ensuring that students leave the course with practical geographical competence.
3. Assessment Structure Overview |
The 2026 exam will still consist of three externally assessed papers, but the timing, mark distribution, and question styles have been adjusted.
| Paper | Focus | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Living with the physical environment | 88 | 1h 30m |
| Paper 2 | Challenges in the human environment | 88 | 1h 30m |
| Paper 3 | Geographical applications | 76 | 1h 30m |
Paper 3 has been extended from 1h 15m to 1h 30m, allowing more time for the issue evaluation and fieldwork sections. The total marks for Paper 3 remain the same, so each question may require deeper reasoning.
4. Paper 1 Physical Environment Topics |
Section A: The challenge of natural hazards continues to cover tectonic hazards, weather hazards, and climate change. However, there is a stronger emphasis on the management of climate change and the analysis of extreme weather events using real-time data. You will be expected to interpret satellite imagery and infographics.
Section B: The living world now makes both tropical rainforests and cold environments compulsory study. The cold environment topic focuses on tundra and polar regions, examining fragile ecosystems, permafrost melt, and conservation strategies. This replaces the previous option where students chose between hot deserts and cold environments. You must be able to compare the nutrient cycles and adaptations in both biomes.
Section C: Physical landscapes in the UK remains largely unchanged, with coastal, river, and glacial landscapes as the three options. Schools will typically teach two of the three.
