📚 Year 8 Cambridge Media: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook |
This quick-reference handbook brings together the essential 'formulas' and 'theorems' that every Year 8 Cambridge Media Studies student needs. These formulas translate complex media concepts into memorable equations and patterns, helping you analyse any media text — from films to adverts to social media posts.
1. The Communication Formula |
Every media message can be understood using the basic communication model. In its simplest form, communication flows from a sender who encodes a message and transmits it through a channel to a receiver who decodes it, leading to some effect. This model reminds us that no media text exists in isolation—it is always produced by someone with a purpose, circulated through a medium, and interpreted by an audience.
Communication = Sender + Message + Channel + Receiver + Effect
2. The Sign Formula |
Semiotics teaches us that a sign is made up of two parts: the signifier (the physical form we can see, hear or touch) and the signified (the mental concept or meaning). A red rose (signifier) signifies love or romance (signified). When analysing media, always ask: what is the signifier and what does it signify?
Sign = Signifier + Signified
3. Narrative Structure Theorem |
Stories in media often follow a predictable pattern. Todorov's narrative theory suggests that a story begins in a state of equilibrium (normality), then a disruption occurs, the disruption is recognised, an attempt is made to repair the damage, and finally a new equilibrium is restored. This five-stage formula can be applied to films, TV drama, video games and even news reports.
Narrative = Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium
4. Propp's Character Functions |
Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and found that all characters perform one of seven basic functions. These character types are not fixed personalities but rather actions or 'spheres of action'. The hero seeks something, the villain creates obstacles, the donor provides a magical object, the helper aids the hero, the princess is the reward, the dispatcher sends the hero on the quest, and the false hero disrupts the journey. In modern media, these functions persist — think of Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, Hagrid (donor), Ron and Hermione (helpers), Ginny (princess), Dumbledore (dispatcher), and Draco (false hero).
Character Function = Hero + Villain + Donor + Helper + Princess + Dispatcher + False Hero
5. Uses and Gratifications Theorem |
This audience theory states that people actively choose media to satisfy specific needs. The four main needs are: Information (learning about the world), Personal Identity (reinforcing one's own values and finding role models), Integration and Social Interaction (connecting with others and having things to talk about), and Entertainment (escaping from problems, relaxing, and enjoying pleasure). Remember the acronym PIES.
Needs = Information + Personal Identity + Integration / Social Interaction + Entertainment
6. Stereotype Equation |
Stereotypes are simplified representations of groups of people. The formula shows that a stereotype takes one generic trait, exaggerates it, and repeats it across media products until it becomes a shorthand. For example, teenagers are often stereotyped as moody and rebellious; this trait is exaggerated to the point where all teenagers appear constantly angry, and it is repeated across countless TV shows and films, reinforcing a distorted image.
Stereotype = Generic Trait + Exaggeration + Repetition
7. Genre Formula |
Genre helps us categorise media texts by their shared conventions. A genre formula combines iconography (recurring visual or sound motifs, like cowboy hats in Westerns or lightsabers in sci-fi), setting (typical locations), narrative patterns (expected story arcs), character types (the hero, the sidekick), and style (camera work, editing, music). When a text mixes conventions from several genres, it becomes a hybrid genre.
Genre = Iconography + Setting + Narrative Patterns + Character Types + Style
8. Denotation and Connotation |
To analyse media images, we separate what we actually see (denotation) from the cultural meanings we attach to it (connotation). A photograph of a sunset (denotation) may connote peace, the end of an era, or romance depending on context. The formula reminds us that meaning is constructed in two layers.
Meaning = Denotation + Connotation
9. Camera Shot Theorem |
The distance between the camera and the subject influences how we feel about the subject. Extreme long shots (ELS) establish the environment and show the subject as small within it; long shots (LS) show full body and body language; medium shots (MS) are conversational, showing the subject from the waist up; close-ups (CU) focus on facial expression and emotion; extreme close-ups (ECU) draw attention to tiny details, creating intensity. This theorem can be expressed as a relationship between shot size and meaning.
hot Size: ELS (Context) → LS (Body Language) → MS (Dialogue) → CU (Emotion) → ECU (Detail)
10. Mise-en-scène Equation |
Mise-en-scène refers to everything placed in front of the camera. This equation helps you remember the five key elements: the setting creates the world; lighting sets the mood and highlights; costumes and makeup reveal character and time period; actor movement and facial expression convey emotion; and props can serve as symbols or motivate action. Analyse each element separately and then consider how they work together to create meaning.
Mise-en-scène = Setting + Lighting + Costume & Makeup + Actor Movement & Expression + Props
