1. What is a Case Study in Sociology? |
In sociology, a case study is an in-depth, detailed investigation of a single individual, group, event, or community. It often relies on multiple sources of information such as interviews, observations, official records, and personal documents to build a comprehensive picture.
Unlike large-scale surveys that aim for breadth, case studies provide depth. They help sociologists understand the unique meanings, motivations, and social processes behind human behaviour.
However, a key limitation is that findings from a single case may not be generalisable to the wider population. Sociologists must be cautious when drawing broader conclusions.
Famous examples include Erving Goffman's study of a mental institution (as a total institution) and Willis's 'Learning to Labour' (a school case study). These studies reveal hidden social rules and inequalities.
2. The Sociological Imagination in Practice |
The sociological imagination, a concept introduced by C. Wright Mills, involves connecting 'personal troubles' with 'public issues'. A case study is a perfect tool for doing this.
Imagine a case study of a man who has been unemployed for two years. At first glance, his situation seems like a personal failure. But using the sociological imagination, we see that he may be a victim of wider economic restructuring, automation, or regional decline.
When you analyse a case, ask: What broader social forces are shaping this person's life? Are there patterns of inequality based on class, gender, or ethnicity?
This skill is central to Edexcel sociology: moving beyond individual blame to see how society structures our opportunities.
3. Analysing Family Diversity Case Studies |
The family is a core topic in Year 9. Case studies can explore different family types: nuclear, single-parent, extended, or reconstituted families. Let's consider a single-parent family led by a working mother.
From a functionalist perspective, one might ask if this family adequately performs essential functions like primary socialisation and emotional support. Critics argue that functionalists often idealise the nuclear family.
A feminist analysis might highlight the dual burden the mother carries – paid work and domestic labour – and show how gender roles are socially constructed. A case study can include interview excerpts to reveal these lived experiences.
In your analysis, always link family structure to wider social policies and cultural norms. Use the case to evaluate theories
