📚 GCSE Biology: Exploring the Secrets of Life and Ecological Balance | GCSE
Biology is the scientific study of living organisms and of the processes that keep them alive. For GCSE students, building a clear picture of what life is made of, and of how living things interact with each other and with their environment, is the essential first step of the whole course. This article walks through the core blocks of GCSE Biology: cell structure and function, genetics and evolution, ecosystems, and the impact of human activity on the environment.
1. What Biology Is and Why It Matters at GCSE | 什么是生物学,以及它在 GCSE 阶段的重要性
Biology sits at the centre of the sciences because it explains the living world around us, from the enzymes in your own cells to the global cycles that regulate the planet's climate. GCSE Biology builds a shared vocabulary of structures, processes and units, and it trains you to move between scales: a molecule, a cell, an organism, a population, an ecosystem. It also develops practical and mathematical skills that are assessed directly in the exams.
- Key skills / 关键技能: using microscopes, drawing tables and graphs, calculating rates and ratios, evaluating data.
- Why it matters / 意义: it underpins medicine, agriculture, conservation and biotechnology, and it helps you make informed decisions about health and the environment.
A useful habit is to treat every topic as an answer to one question: how does this keep an organism, or an ecosystem, alive and working? If you can answer that in one sentence, you have understood the topic rather than memorised it.
2. Cell Structure and Function: The Basic Unit of Life | 细胞的结构与功能:生命的基本单位
Cells are the smallest units that can carry out all the processes of life, and they are the building blocks of every organism. In this part of the course you learn the fine internal structure of cells, the job each part performs, and how these tiny units combine into organisms of very different shapes and sizes. Understanding how a cell works is the only reliable route to understanding how a whole organism works.
|---|---|
| Nucleus 细胞核 | Stores DNA and controls the cell's activities. |
| Cytoplasm 细胞质 | Site of most chemical reactions. |
| Cell membrane 细胞膜 | Controls what enters and leaves. |
| Mitochondria 线粒体 | Site of aerobic respiration. |
| Ribosomes 核糖体 | Site of protein synthesis. |

| Cell wall 细胞壁 | Made of cellulose; gives support. |
| Vacuole 液泡 | Contains cell sap; keeps the cell firm. |
Eukaryotic cells (animal, plant, fungal) have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; prokaryotic cells (bacteria) are much smaller, have no nucleus, and carry a single circular loop of DNA plus plasmids. Specialised cells such as root hair cells, red blood cells, sperm cells and nerve cells show how shape follows function - a theme examiners love to test.
Magnification = image size ÷ actual size
Metabolism is the sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell, including the reactions that build molecules up (anabolism) and those that break them down (catabolism). Respiration releases the energy that drives these reactions, while photosynthesis captures light energy and stores it in glucose.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy)
DNA replication happens before cell division. The double helix unwinds, the two strands act as templates, and complementary bases pair up (A with T, C with G), so each new DNA molecule contains one original strand and one new strand - semi-conservative replication. Protein synthesis then follows two steps: transcription in the nucleus, where a DNA template makes messenger RNA, and translation at the ribosomes, where the base sequence is read in triplets to assemble amino acids into a chain that folds into a protein. Because the shape of a protein determines its function, a change in the DNA sequence can change the protein and, therefore, the organism.
- Mitosis / 有丝分裂: produces genetically identical diploid cells for growth and repair.
- Diffusion / 扩散: passive movement from high to low concentration.
- Osmosis / 渗透: movement of water across a partially permeable membrane.
- Active transport / 主动运输: requires energy from respiration; moves substances against a concentration gradient.
4. Genetics: Genes, Genomes and Genotypes |
Genetics explains why offspring resemble their parents but are never exact copies. A gene is a short section of DNA that codes for a particular protein; the genome is the entire genetic material of an organism. Alleles are different versions of the same gene, and the combination of alleles an organism carries is its genotype, while the visible or measurable characteristics it produces are its phenotype.
In a monohybrid cross, alleles are written as letters: dominant alleles as capitals (A) and recessive alleles as lower case (a). A homozygous organism has two identical alleles (AA or aa); a heterozygous organism has two different alleles (Aa). If two heterozygous parents are crossed, the expected offspring ratio is 3 dominant : 1 recessive, which is exactly what a Punnett square predicts:
Aa × Aa → AA : Aa : Aa : aa → 3 dominant : 1 recessive
- Useful exam tip / 考试提示: always state the parent genotypes, draw the Punnett square, then give the ratio or percentage with the correct units and wording.
- Common trap / 常见陷阱: genotype is the letter combination; phenotype is the description. Do not mix them up in written answers.
5. Gene Expression and the Role of the Environment |
Not every gene in a cell is switched on all the time. Gene expression is the process by which the information in a gene is used to make a protein, and it is carefully regulated so that a muscle cell looks and behaves nothing like a nerve cell even though both contain the same DNA. Environmental factors - diet, exercise, temperature, light, stress, exposure to chemicals - can influence how genes are expressed and therefore how a characteristic develops.
This explains continuous and discontinuous variation. Traits such as height, mass and skin colour show continuous variation because many genes and the environment act together; traits such as blood group or earlobe attachment show discontinuous variation because they are controlled by one or a few genes with distinct categories. Identical twins are the classic illustration: they share the same genotype, yet differences in lifestyle and environment make them measurably different as adults.
6. Evolution: Natural Selection and Adaptation |
Evolution is the change in the inherited characteristics of a population over many generations. Darwin and Wallace proposed natural selection as the mechanism, and the modern version of the theory can be summarised in a few logical steps that examiners expect you to write in order.
- Variation / 变异: individuals in a population differ because of mutations and sexual reproduction.
- Competition / 竞争: organisms compete for limited resources such as food, water, mates and space.
- Survival of the fittest / 适者生存: individuals with advantageous alleles are more likely to survive and reproduce.
- Inheritance / 遗传: the advantageous alleles are passed to the next generation.
- Change over time / 长期变化: allele frequencies shift, and after many generations the population becomes better adapted.
Evidence comes from fossils, from the similarity of DNA and proteins between species, and from observable change in the laboratory or the clinic. Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is the fastest and clearest example: when antibiotics are used, resistant bacteria survive, reproduce, and the resistant allele becomes common in the population. Over long periods, this same process leads to speciation, and when a species cannot adapt quickly enough, it becomes extinct.
7. Ecosystems: Structure, Communities and Food Chains |
An ecosystem is the community of organisms living in a habitat together with all the non-living factors around them. Ecosystems are another indispensable theme in GCSE Biology, and here students analyse how they are put together and how they operate: from community structure to food chains to energy flow.
- Habitat / 栖息地: the place where an organism lives.
- Population / 种群: all the individuals of one species in an area.
- Community / 群落: all the populations of different species living together.
- Producers / 生产者: plants and algae that make their own food by photosynthesis.
- Consumers / 消费者: animals that eat other organisms.
- Decomposers / 分解者: bacteria and fungi that break down dead material and return nutrients to the soil.
Food chains show the direction in which energy and biomass pass from one organism to the next, and they always begin with a producer. A food web is simply several interconnected food chains, which is why removing one species can affect many others.
8. Energy Flow and Species Interactions |
Energy enters almost every ecosystem as sunlight, is captured by producers during photosynthesis, and then passes along the trophic levels: producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer. Only about 10 per cent of the energy at one level is transferred to the next; the rest is lost in respiration, movement, excretion and as heat, and some is simply not eaten.
Energy transfer efficiency = (energy in next level ÷ energy in current level) × 100%
Because energy is lost at every step, food chains are usually short - rarely more than four or five trophic levels. This also explains why pyramids of biomass narrow sharply towards the top.
Organisms also interact, and these relationships shape population sizes. Competition occurs when two organisms need the same limited resource; predation is where a predator eats its prey; mutualism benefits both partners, as with bees and flowers or nitrogen-fixing bacteria in legume roots; and parasitism benefits the parasite while harming the host. Predator and prey populations often rise and fall in cycles, with the predator numbers lagging behind the prey numbers.
9. Biotic and Abiotic Factors and Ecosystem Stability |
Non-living (abiotic) factors include light intensity, temperature, moisture level, soil pH, mineral content and oxygen concentration in water. Living (biotic) factors include the availability of food, the number of predators, and disease. Together they determine which species can survive where, and how large a population can grow.
|---|---|
| Light 光照 | Limits photosynthesis; drives plant distribution. |
| Temperature 温度 | Controls enzyme activity and growth rates.
| Disease 疾病 | Spreads faster in dense populations. |
Materials are recycled through ecosystems. In the carbon cycle, carbon moves between the atmosphere, living organisms, the soil and the oceans through photosynthesis, respiration, feeding, decomposition and combustion. The water cycle and the nitrogen cycle work in the same spirit: matter is reused, while energy flows through and is eventually lost as heat.
Stable ecosystems resist change because of this recycling and because of a range of species that can fill similar roles. When conditions change slowly, succession can rebuild a community; but a sudden or severe disturbance may push the ecosystem past a tipping point, from which recovery is slow or impossible.
10. Human Impact on the Environment |
Human impact on the environment is the most thought-provoking theme in the course. Students learn how actions such as overhunting, deforestation and climate change act on the planet, and then analyse the long-term consequences for biodiversity, ecosystem stability and sustainable development.
| Overhunting and overfishing 过度狩猎与捕捞 | Reduces population size, disrupts food webs, may cause extinction. |
| Greenhouse gas emissions 温室气体排放 | Raises global temperature and sea level, shifts species ranges. |
| Pollution 污染 | Fertiliser runoff causes eutrophication; plastics harm wildlife. |
Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, driving climate change. Rising temperatures shift where species can live, melt ice and raise sea levels, and make extreme weather more frequent. Deforestation removes the trees that would otherwise absorb carbon dioxide, so the two problems reinforce each other.
