GCSE Physics is a qualification built around a single central question: how well do you understand the laws that govern the natural world, and how confidently can you apply them? Every paper tests a student's grasp of matter, energy, forces and motion, then asks them to use those ideas to explain and predict a wide range of phenomena and events - from a falling ball to a signal travelling through an optical fibre.
This article walks through every major topic area of the specification, the mathematical relationships you must be able to recall and use, the practical skills examiners reward, and the revision habits that turn understanding into marks.
1. What GCSE Physics Actually Assesses | GCSE
GCSE Physics is not a memory test. It is an assessment of conceptual understanding plus application. Students must know the fundamental concepts of matter, energy, forces and motion, and must be able to use those concepts to explain and predict phenomena and events they have never seen before in exactly that form.
Examiners typically reward three layers of skill, and strong candidates move between them fluently.
- Recall - definitions, units, symbols, standard values and the equations listed on the formula sheet. |
- Application - substituting values, rearranging equations, converting units and solving multi-step numerical problems. |
- Analysis - interpreting graphs and tables, evaluating experimental methods, and justifying conclusions with evidence. |
In written answers, the number of marks usually equals the number of creditworthy points expected. A three-mark question almost always wants three separate scientific ideas, not one long sentence.
2. Forces and Their Effects |
A force is a push or a pull acting on an object due to an interaction with another object. Forces are measured in newtons (N) using a newton meter, and because they have both magnitude and direction they are vector quantities. Students must be comfortable adding forces along a line, finding a resultant force, and recognising when forces are balanced and when they are not.
Every force has an effect, and the effects fall into two families: changing the shape of an object, or changing its motion. This distinction underpins the whole of mechanics.
- Contact forces: friction, air resistance (drag), normal contact force, tension, upthrust. |
- Non-contact forces: gravitational force, electrostatic force, magnetic force. |
- Weight is the force of gravity on a mass, given by W = m × g, where g ≈ 9.8 N/kg on Earth.
W = m × g
Students should also be able to describe how friction and drag oppose motion, how they can be reduced (lubrication, streamlining), and why they are sometimes useful (brakes, grip, terminal velocity in a skydive).
3. Motion, Speed, Velocity and Acceleration |
Motion is described using scalar quantities such as distance and speed, and vector quantities such as displacement, velocity and acceleration. Speed is how fast something moves; velocity is speed in a stated direction; acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. A negative acceleration simply means the object is slowing down if it was moving forward.
The three relationships below appear in almost every motion question, so they must be recalled instantly and rearranged without hesitation.
speed = distance ÷ time
acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time taken
a = Δv ÷ t
Graph skills are examined alongside the algebra. On a distance-time graph, the gradient gives speed and a flat line means the object is stationary. On a velocity-time graph, the gradient gives acceleration and the area beneath the line gives the distance travelled. Students who read graphs carelessly lose marks that require no calculation at all.
4. Newton's Laws in Problem Solving |
Newton's three laws provide the framework for explaining why objects move as they do. The first law states that an object stays at rest or moves at constant velocity unless a resultant force acts on it. The second law links force, mass and acceleration. The third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction acting on a different object.
F = m × a
e, the mass inferred from a measured acceleration. Rearranged, it gives m = F ÷ a and a = F ÷ m, and both forms are frequently required.
将它变形得到 m = F ÷ a 与 a = F ÷ m,两种形式都经常用到。
| Acceleration 加速度 | a | metre per second squared (m/s²) | light gate 光电门 |
| Velocity 速度 | v | metre per second (m/s) | light gate / stopwatch 光电门或秒表 |
A common exam trap is confusing mass with weight. Mass is the amount of matter in an object and does not change with location; weight is a force and does change, because g differs from planet to planet.
5. Energy Stores, Transfers and Conservation |
Energy is never created or destroyed; it is only transferred from one store to another. This principle of conservation of energy is the backbone of the topic, and every energy question can be traced back to it. Students must be able to name the stores involved, describe the pathways of transfer, and account for any energy that appears to be lost.
- Energy stores: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, thermal, chemical, nuclear, magnetic, electrostatic. |
- Transfer pathways: mechanically (by a force), electrically, by heating, and by radiation (including light and sound). |
- "Wasted" energy is not destroyed - it is dissipated to the thermal store of the surroundings, usually making them slightly warmer.
The two most frequently used energy equations are worth memorising in both directions.
kinetic energy Eₖ = ½ × m × v²
gravitational potential energy Eₚ = m × g × h
Units matter here. Energy is measured in joules (J), and one kilojoule (kJ) equals 1000 J. In a typical pendulum or roller-coaster question, you equate Eₚ at the top to Eₖ at the bottom, which is a neat example of conservation in action.
6. Efficiency, Power and Energy Calculations |
No real device transfers all of its input energy usefully. Efficiency compares what you get out with what you put in, and it can be expressed as a decimal, a fraction or a percentage. An efficiency greater than 1 (or 100%) is physically impossible and is a sure sign of a calculation error.
efficiency = useful output energy ÷ total input energy
efficiency (%) = (useful output ÷ total input) × 100
. The relationship between power, energy and time appears both in physics and in everyday contexts such as electricity bills.
P = E ÷ t
Students should be able to calculate the cost of running an appliance using the kilowatt-hour (kWh), and to explain why a 2000 W kettle boils water faster than a 1000 W one even though both transfer the same total energy.
7. Waves: Properties, Propagation and Reflection |
A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. Waves are described by amplitude, wavelength, frequency, period and speed, and they come in two types: transverse waves oscillate perpendicular to the direction of travel, while longitudinal waves oscillate parallel to it.
- Amplitude - the maximum displacement from the rest position; it relates to the energy carried. |
- Wavelength (λ) - the distance between two identical points on consecutive waves, in metres. |
- Frequency (f) - the number of waves passing a point each second, in hertz (Hz).
- Period (T) - the time for one complete wave, where T = 1 ÷ f.
v = f × λ
Reflection is studied in both light and sound. When a wave hits a boundary it can be reflected, and for a plane mirror the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, both measured from the normal. Echoes, ultrasound scanners and sonar all depend on this simple rule.
8. Electromagnetic Radiation and Its Applications |
he spectrum is usually listed in order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength, and each region has distinctive uses and hazards.
Questions in this area usually ask students to select a suitable region for a stated purpose and justify the choice with a property of that radiation, then compare the risks with the benefits.
9. Light: Reflection, Refraction and Materials |
Light travels in straight lines through a uniform medium, and any change in direction happens at a boundary. Reflection is the bouncing of light off a surface; refraction is the change in direction that occurs because light changes speed when it passes from one medium into another of different density - it slows down entering glass or water and speeds up leaving them.
