📚 Year 8 Cambridge English Literature: Formulas & Theorems Quick Reference Handbook |
In English Literature, we don't work with numbers and symbols in the same way as maths or science, but we do rely on powerful analytical 'formulas' that help us unlock meaning in any text. These formulas are structured approaches to understanding plot, character, language, and theme. This handbook gathers the essential 'theorems'—the proven patterns and frameworks—that Year 8 students need to analyse poetry, prose, and drama confidently. Once you memorise and apply these, you will find that every piece of literature becomes a puzzle you can solve.
1. The Plot Structure Formula |
Plot = Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Resolution
The exposition introduces the main characters, the setting, and the initial situation before any major conflict begins.
Rising action builds tension through a series of complications, obstacles, or conflicts that the protagonist must face.
The climax is the turning point of the story—the moment of greatest tension when the main conflict reaches its peak.
Falling action shows the consequences of the climax and begins to tie up loose ends as the story moves toward closure.
The resolution reveals the final outcome of the story, resolving the central conflict and showing how the characters have changed.
2. The Character Analysis Formula (STEAL) | 人物分析公式 (STEAL)
Character = Speech + Thoughts + Effect on others + Actions + Looks
Speech: What does the character say, and how do they say it? Dialogue reveals personality, social class, and emotional state.
Thoughts: What does the character think or feel when we are given access to their inner world? This shows their true motivations.
Effect on others: How do other characters react to this person? Their responses tell us about the character’s social role and impact.
Actions: What does the character actually do? Behaviour often speaks louder than words and reveals true nature.
Looks: How is the character’s appearance described? Clothing, posture, and facial expressions contribute to our first and lasting impressions.
3. The Setting Formula |
Setting = Time + Place + Atmosphere (Mood)
Time refers to the historical period, time of day, or season in which the events take place. It can shape the characters’ beliefs and possibilities.
Place is the physical location—a room, a city, a forest, a spaceship. It often acts as more than just a backdrop, influencing the plot directly.
Atmosphere, or mood, is the emotional feeling that the setting creates, achieved through sensory details like weather, light, and sound.
Together, these three elements work to make the fictional world believable and meaningful for the reader.
4. The Theme and Symbol Formula |
Theme = Abstract Idea + Textual Evidence
Symbol = Concrete Object → Abstract Meaning
A theme is not a single word like 'love' but a complete statement about a universal idea that the author explores through the story.
To identify a theme, look for repeated ideas, conflicts, and moments of change, then ask what message the writer is sending about life or human nature.
A symbol is an object, colour, or image that represents an abstract idea beyond its literal meaning—such as a dove symbolising peace.
Always connect the symbol back to a theme: ask what deeper significance the object holds within the story’s world.
5. The Figurative Language Formula |
Simile: X is like Y | Metaphor: X is Y | Personification: Object + Human Quality
A simile compares two unlike things using 'like' or 'as' to create a vivid image, e.g. 'as brave as a lion'.
A metaphor directly states that one thing is another, blending them to suggest a hidden similarity, e.g. 'the classroom was a zoo'.
Personification gives human qualities, emotions, or actions to non-human things, making them feel alive and relatable.
Imagery appeals to the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) and is the foundation of all figurative language.
Hyperbole is deliberate exaggeration for effect, while oxymoron places opposite words side by side ('deafening silence').
6. The Tone and Mood Formula |
Tone = Author’s Attitude | Mood = Reader’s Emotional Response
Tone is conveyed through word choice (diction), sentence structure, and the author’s implied viewpoint—it can be ironic, serious, playful, or angry.
Mood is the atmosphere the reader experiences; it is created by setting, imagery, and the events of the narrative.
A single passage can have a sad tone but create a hopeful mood, depending on how the writer balances language and detail.
To determine tone, read a passage aloud and listen for the emotional quality of the voice; to determine mood, note your own feelings.
7. The Point of View Formula |
POV = Who tells the story + How much they know
First-person point of view uses 'I' and limits the reader to what the narrator personally sees, thinks, and feels.
Second-person point of view addresses the reader as 'you', placing them directly inside the story, which is rare in full-length novels.
Third-person limited point of view follows one character closely, revealing their inner thoughts but not those of others.
Third-person omniscient point of view gives the narrator a godlike knowledge of all characters’ thoughts, feelings, and histories.
An unreliable narrator, often in first person, cannot be fully trusted, forcing the reader to question the truth of the tale.
8. The Conflict Formula |
Conflict = Protagonist vs. Force (Internal or External)
Character vs. Self is an internal conflict where the protagonist struggles with their own fears, desires, or moral dilemmas.
Character vs. Character is an external conflict between two individuals, often the hero and the antagonist.
Character vs. Society places the individual against social norms, laws, or cultural expectations.
Character vs. Nature involves a struggle against natural forces such as storms, wilderness, or disease.
Character vs. Technology or the Supernatural explores clashes with advanced machines, artificial intelligence, ghosts, or fate.
Multiple conflicts often intertwine in a single text, deepening the narrative and driving character development.
9. The Poetry Analysis Formula (Simplified TP-CASTT) | 诗歌分析公式 (简易版TP-CASTT)
Title → Paraphrase → Connotation → Attitude → Shifts → Title (again) → Theme
Title (before reading): Predict what the poem might be about based on the title alone; it primes your mind for key ideas.
Paraphrase: Rewrite the poem in your own words, line by line, to ensure you understand the literal meaning.
Connotation: Look for figurative language, imagery, and sound devices that add layers of meaning beyond the literal.
Attitude: Identify the speaker’s tone—both toward the subject and toward the audience.
Shifts: Notice any changes in tone, speaker, setting, or mood; these turning points often signal a deeper meaning.
Title (revisited): Re-examine the title; after reading, what new meanings does it hold?
Theme: Formulate a universal statement about the human condition that the poem communicates through its artistry.
10. The PEE Paragraph Formula | PEE
PEE = Point + Evidence + Explanation
Point: Start with a clear topic sentence that directly answers the question and makes one analytical claim.
Evidence: Embed a short, well-chosen quotation from the text that supports your point, using quotation marks correctly.
Explanation: This is where you unpack the effect of the evidence—discussing what the writer’s techniques show and why it matters.
Use analytical verbs like 'suggests', 'implies', 'conveys', and 'highlights' to deepen your explanation.
A strong explanation always links back to the writer’s purpose and the overall effect on the reader.
You can extend this to PEEL by adding a Link sentence that connects the paragraph to the next point or back to the main argument.
11. The Rhetorical Appeals Formula (Ethos, Pathos, Logos) |
Persuasion = Ethos (Credibility) + Pathos (Emotion) + Logos (Logic)
Ethos builds the speaker’s authority and trustworthiness, making the audience believe they are honest, knowledgeable, and fair-minded.
Pathos appeals to the audience’s emotions—fear, pity, anger, joy—to create a personal connection and motivate action.
Logos uses facts, statistics, logical reasoning, and clear structure to convince the audience through rational thought.
In literature, characters and narrators often combine these appeals when giving speeches or trying to influence others.
12. The Narrative Perspective Formula |
Narrative Distance = Level of Detachment vs. Involvement
An intrusive narrator comments directly on the story, offering opinions, moral judgements, or foreshadowing future events.
An objective or detached narrator simply reports what happens and what characters say, like a camera, leaving interpretation to the reader.
Stream of consciousness presents a character’s jumbled thoughts and sensations in a continuous flow, mimicking the mind at work.
Free indirect discourse blends third-person narration with the character’s inner voice, merging the narrator’s words with the character’s thoughts.
