1. What is Media Studies? |
Media Studies is the critical exploration of how media texts are constructed, how they communicate meaning and how audiences respond to them. It is not just about watching TV or scrolling through TikTok; it is about asking why a video was shot in a certain way, who funded it, and what message is being sent.
In this subject, you will study print, broadcast and digital media, and you will learn to use technical terms to describe what you see and hear. The aim is to become a media-literate citizen who can engage with content thoughtfully rather than passively.
2. The Media Triangle: Text, Audience, Production |
All media texts can be examined from three angles: the text itself (its codes, conventions and narrative), the audience (who consumes it and how) and the production context (who made it, for what purpose and using which technologies).
For example, a cereal commercial uses bright colours and happy music to appeal to families; it is scheduled during children's TV hours, and it is produced by a large corporation that wants to sell breakfast products.
Keep this triangle in mind whenever you analyse a media text. It will help you structure your exam answers and your creative projects.
3. Deconstructing Media Texts: Mise-en-Scène |
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning 'everything placed in the scene'. It includes setting, props, costume, lighting, colour and the positioning of actors. These elements are never accidental; they are chosen deliberately to create mood and meaning.
For instance, a scene set in a dimly lit alley with flickering neon signs suggests danger and suspense, while a sunlit garden with pastel-coloured clothing creates a sense of innocence and calm.
When you watch a film trailer over the holiday, pause at any moment and ask: what is in the frame, and why is it there?
4. Camera Shots and Angles |
Camera framing shapes how we perceive a character or event. The most common shot types are extreme long shot (establishing location), long shot (full body), mid shot (waist up), close-up (face) and extreme close-up (eyes or details).
Camera angles also influence meaning. A low angle makes a character look powerful or intimidating, while a high angle makes them appear vulnerable. An eye-level shot feels neutral and realistic.
Practise identifying shots and angles in a film scene and draw a simple storyboard labelling each frame with the correct term.
5. Lighting and Colour Symbolism |
Lighting creates atmosphere and guides the audience's focus. High-key lighting is bright and even, often used in comedies and advertisements, while low-key lighting uses deep shadows to create tension, typical of horror and film noir.
Colour, too, carries symbolic meaning. Red can signal danger, passion or anger; blue suggests coldness or sadness; green might indicate nature or envy. Media producers use colour palettes to reinforce the message of a scene.
Create a 'colour mood board' for a made-up film genre, collecting images that use a consistent colour scheme, and explain your choices in a short paragraph.
6. Sound Design: Diegetic vs Non-Diegetic |
Sound is a powerful storytelling tool. Diegetic sound is any sound that exists within the story world, such as dialogue, footsteps or a door slamming. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world, like background music, voiceover narration or sound effects added for the audience only.
Contrapuntal sound is when the music contrasts with the visual, creating unease or irony. For example, cheerful music playing over a violent scene can make it more disturbing.
Watch a movie trailer with the sound muted, then again with sound. Note how much meaning is carried by audio alone.
7. Target Audience and Segmentation |
Media producers rarely aim at 'everyone'; they target specific audience groups. Demographics segment people by age, gender, income, education and occupation. Psychographics divide audiences by interests, attitudes and lifestyle choices.
For any text you study, consider: who is the intended audience? How do you know? Look at the cast, the platform, the language used and the products advertised around it.
A teen magazine will use informal language, vibrant colours and cover stars teenagers recognise, while a financial newspaper uses formal register, charts and muted tones.
8. Genre Codes and Conventions |
Genre is a way of categorising media texts based on shared conventions. A horror film typically includes dark settings, jump scares, eerie music and a monster or villain. A romantic comedy will feature a meet-cute, misunderstandings and a happy ending.
Genres are not fixed; they evolve over time and often combine (hybrid genres), such as a sci-fi western or a romantic thriller. Recognising genre helps audiences set expectations and helps producers market their work.
Choose a genre you enjoy and list five visual and five sound conventions that appear consistently across texts in that genre.
9. Narrative Theory: Todorov's Equilibrium |
Narrative refers to the way a story is organised. Tzvetan Todorov's equilibrium theory suggests most stories follow a five-stage pattern: equilibrium (a balanced world), disruption (something goes wrong), recognition of disruption, attempt to repair, and a new equilibrium.
You can apply this theory to almost any film, advert or even a short social media story. Identify the moment of disruption: it is the event that sets the plot in motion.
As you watch a film this summer, draw a narrative arc and label each stage. Notice how the new equilibrium is often different from the starting one because characters have changed.
10. Representation: Stereotypes and Inclusion |
Representation is how media texts depict people, places, ideas and events. Media does not reflect reality perfectly; it selects and constructs versions of reality. Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated representations of particular groups, which can lead to unfair assumptions.
Contemporary media increasingly challenges stereotypes and promotes inclusive representation across ethnicity, gender identity, disability and social class. Analysing representation means looking beyond the surface at who is included, who is missing, and how power is portrayed.
Examine the characters in your favourite TV show: are they multi-dimensional, or do they rely on simple stereotypes? Write a short reflection.
11. Creating a Film Poster: Practical Brief |
Now put your learning into practice by designing a film poster for an imaginary movie. You will need to decide on a genre, target audience, title, tagline and key visual elements, including a main image, colour scheme, font choices and credits.
Remember that a poster must communicate genre instantly and attract its target audience. Use symbolic codes such as costume, lighting and facial expressions to convey the story's mood.
Create your poster on paper or using a digital tool, and then present it to a family member, explaining how each element links to media language and audience appeal.
12. Media Literacy Check: Fact vs Opinion |
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyse, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. A crucial skill is distinguishing fact from opinion, especially on social media and news websites where information is mixed with commentary.
Facts can be verified with evidence. Opinions express personal beliefs or judgments. Headlines often blur the line to attract clicks. Practise by reading an online news article and colour-coding sentences: green for fact, orange for opinion.
Set a personal goal for the next school year: to question every media message you encounter by asking the five key questions: who created it, what techniques are used, how might different people interpret it, what is omitted and why was it made?
