📚 Year 8 Cambridge Economics: Interdisciplinary Question Practice | Year
Economics does not exist in isolation. At Year 8 level, Cambridge assessments often include questions that blend economics with mathematics, geography, history, business studies and even science. These interdisciplinary questions test your ability to use knowledge from different subjects to analyse real-world economic problems. This article provides practical training to help you master such tasks, from decoding the command word to writing a full-mark answer.
1. What Are Interdisciplinary Questions in Economics? |
An interdisciplinary question in economics requires you to draw on two or more subject areas to answer it fully. For example, you might be given a table of numerical data (mathematics) about oil production in different countries (geography) and asked to explain how a historical event (history) changed the price. In Cambridge Year 8, these questions often appear in data-response or structured answer sections.
The key feature is that no single subject gives you the whole answer. The mathematics tells you how much something changed; the geography tells you where and why it happens; the history tells you when and why it started; the economics tells you what it means for scarcity, price and choice. Examiners award marks for each of these layers, so a one-line answer can never reach the top band.
Interdisciplinary questions also reward clear structure. A common Year 8 mark scheme gives credit for: correct calculation, accurate use of data, a relevant subject link, economic reasoning, and a short judgement. Remembering these five ingredients turns a confusing question into a checklist you can work through calmly.
2. Economics and Mathematics: Interpreting Data |
Mathematics is the language of economics. You will often need to read tables, calculate percentages or interpret simple graphs. Percentages are the single most common calculation in Year 8 economics, because they allow fair comparison between countries and years of very different size.
Percentage change = (New value − Old value) ÷ Old value × 100%
Share of total = (Part ÷ Total) × 100%
Now apply these formulas to a data-response table. The figures below are illustrative but realistic, and they show the kind of table you may meet in a Cambridge Lower Secondary paper.
| Country | 国家 | Oil output 2019 (million barrels/day) | 2019 年产量 | Oil output 2023 (million barrels/day) | 2023 年产量 |
| Saudi Arabia
| Russia
| United States
| Nigeria
| World total
d States changed from 12.2 to 12.9, so the percentage change is (12.9 − 12.2) ÷ 12.2 × 100% = +5.7%. Nigeria fell from 1.9 to 1.4, so the percentage change is (1.4 − 1.9) ÷ 1.9 × 100% = −26.3%. The US share of world output in 2023 is 12.9 ÷ 101.8 × 100% = 12.7%.
When you interpret graphs, name the trend, quote a number, then explain the economic meaning. A line graph rising steadily suggests growing demand or rising price; a bar chart comparing two years shows change over time; a pie chart shows shares and is best described with the largest and smallest slice.
- Always write the unit (barrels/day, %, £).
- Round to one decimal place unless told otherwise. |
- Never describe a table row by row - select the most useful numbers. |
3. Economics and Geography: Resources, Trade and Location |
Geography explains why the same good costs different amounts in different places. Natural resources are unevenly distributed: oil is concentrated in the Middle East, iron ore in Australia and Brazil, and rare earth metals in China. This uneven distribution is the basis of international trade.
Two geographical ideas appear constantly in Year 8 economics papers. The first is comparative advantage: a country should specialise in what it gives up least to produce. The second is transport cost and distance: the further a good must travel, the higher its final price, which links directly to the economics concept of supply cost.
Climate also matters. Drought reduces the harvest, which shifts the supply curve to the left and raises food prices. A flood damages factories and infrastructure, reducing productive capacity. In an exam answer, link the physical event to the economic outcome.
Example question: 'Using the map of oil fields and the table of output, explain why Saudi Arabia specialises in oil exports.' A strong answer names the resource, explains the geological and geographical reason, then states the economic benefit: export earnings, jobs, and the opportunity cost of not developing other industries.
4. Economics and History: How Past Events Shape Markets |
History provides the 'why now' of economic data. Prices, unemployment and trade patterns are not random; they are the result of decisions and events. Year 8 questions often give a short source, a timeline or a quotation and ask you to connect it to an economic change.
Three historical episodes appear again and again in Cambridge-style papers:
- 1973 oil shock: an oil embargo cut supply, the supply curve shifted left, and the world price of oil rose sharply, causing cost-push inflation. | 1973
- The Industrial Revolution: new machines raised productivity, lowered unit costs and moved workers from farms to factories. |
- The 2008 financial crisis: falling house prices and failing banks reduced lending, investment and consumer spending. | 2008
Chronology matters because it establishes cause and effect. Always check the order of events before you claim that one caused the other. A rise in price before an embargo cannot have been caused by that embargo.
History questions also test the distinction between correlation and causation. Two things rising together does not prove one caused the other; a third factor may explain both. Writing 'this suggests' rather than 'this proves' shows the examiner you understand that distinction.
5. Economics and Business Studies: Firms, Costs and Strategy |
Business studies gives economics its real-world examples. Year 8 papers may describe a small firm and ask you to calculate its costs or decide whether it should expand. The vocabulary overlaps heavily: revenue, cost, profit, break-even, stakeholder, market share.
Profit = Total revenue − Total cost
Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ (Price − Variable cost per unit)
Worked example: a bakery has fixed costs of £2,400 per month, sells each loaf for £4.00, and has a variable cost of £1.60 per loaf. The contribution per loaf is £4.00 − £1.60 = £2.40, so break-even output = £2,400 ÷ £2.40 = 1,000 loaves per month. Selling 1,200 loaves gives a profit of 200 × £2.40 = £480.
Economics adds the wider view that business studies alone misses. A firm's decision to cut costs by moving production overseas may raise profit but also raises unemployment at home, changes the trade balance, and creates an opportunity cost in lost tax revenue. Good answers combine both perspectives.
- Stakeholders to consider: owners, workers, customers, suppliers, government, local community. |
- Decisions have trade-offs, not just benefits - always mention the cost. |
6. Economics and Science: Energy, Environment and Technology |
Science supplies the physical facts that economics then values. A question might give the carbon dioxide emitted per kilowatt-hour by different fuels and ask you to explain why a government introduces a carbon tax.
| Coal
| Natural gas
| Solar
| Wind
Carbon dioxide is a negative externality: a cost imposed on society that the producer or consumer does not pay for. A carbon tax forces the polluter to include that cost in the price, which raises the price of high-carbon energy and makes low-carbon alternatives relatively cheaper.
Science also informs estimates, which is why exam questions ask about reliability. A sample of one power station is not enough to describe a whole country. When you evaluate data, ask: who collected it, when, how large was the sample, and could the method bias the result?
7. Economics and Citizenship: Tax, Public Spending and Fairness |
Citizenship links economics to society. Governments collect taxes and spend the revenue on public goods such as roads, schools, hospitals and defence, which markets would under-provide because people cannot easily be excluded from using them.
Questions in this area usually ask you to evaluate rather than calculate. A useful three-part structure is: who gains, who loses, and is the outcome fair? For example, raising income tax on high earners raises revenue for schools (gain) but may reduce the incentive to work or invest (loss), and reasonable people disagree about whether that trade-off is fair.
- Progressive tax: the rate rises as income rises. |
- Regressive tax: takes a larger share of a low income. |
- Public good characteristics: non-excludable and non-rival. |
Always finish an evaluation question with a short, justified conclusion. 'Overall, the tax is likely to be fairer but slightly less efficient, because...' is far stronger than leaving the reader to guess your view.
8. Command Words and Question Types |
Most lost marks in interdisciplinary questions come from misreading the command word, not from lacking knowledge. Learn what each one demands before you write.
| Command word | 指令词 | What it requires | 要求 | Typical marks | 常见分值 |
| Calculate 计算 | Show the formula, substitute, state the unit. | 2-3 |
| Describe 描述 | Say what the data shows, with numbers. | 2 |
| Explain 解释 | Give a reason using 'because', link cause to effect. | 3-4 |
| Analyse 分析 | Break the issue into parts and show relationships. | 4-6 |
| Compare 比较 | Give similarities and differences, both sides. | 4 |
| Evaluate 评估 | Weigh arguments, then reach a judgement. | 6-8 |
A quick rule: the number of marks usually equals the number of separate points plus one for development. A four-mark 'explain' question needs two developed points, not four short ones.
9. A Five-Step Answer Framework |
Use the same five steps for every interdisciplinary question. The routine saves time and prevents panic in the exam hall.
- Step 1 - Decode: underline the command word, the subject areas named and the number of marks. |
- Step 2 - Data: select two or three figures from the table, graph or source that you will actually use. |
- Step 3 - Subject link: name the non-economics subject explicitly, for example 'geographically, oil reserves are concentrated...'. |
- Step 4 - Economic reasoning: explain the effect on scarcity, price, cost, demand, supply or welfare. |
- Step 5 - Judgement: one sentence that answers the question directly and states how strong your conclusion is.
For each developed point, use the P-E-E-L chain: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link back to the question. This is the same structure used in English essays, which is why strong writers often score well in interdisciplinary economics.
Useful sentence starters: 'The data shows that...', 'Because of this, the supply curve...', 'Geographically, this matters because...', 'Historically, the pattern began
