📚 Year 8 CAIE Psychology: Transition Guide to IGCSE | Year 8 CAIE

Welcome to the Year 8 Psychology bridging guide, written to smooth your transition into the CAIE IGCSE Psychology course (0987). This article introduces the core concepts, research methods and approaches that form the backbone of the IGCSE syllabus, giving you a genuine head start in understanding how psychologists think, investigate and write.

You do not need any prior psychological knowledge to use this guide. What you do need is curiosity, a vocabulary notebook, and the willingness to ask 'how do we know that?' every time you meet a claim about human behaviour.

1. What is Psychology? |

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It seeks to explain why we think, feel and act the way we do through systematic observation, controlled experimentation and evidence-based analysis, rather than through intuition or tradition.

Two words in that definition carry the whole subject. The mind refers to internal processes such as thoughts, memories, emotions and perceptions, which cannot be seen directly. Behaviour refers to anything observable and measurable, such as what a person says, does or how long they take to react. Psychologists infer the mind from behaviour, which is why careful measurement matters so much.

Unlike everyday 'common sense', psychology relies on empirical methods to test hypotheses, so it counts as a true science. In IGCSE you will learn to distinguish between objective facts from subjective opinions, a skill that is vital across all your subjects.

Behaviour = f(Person, Situation) → B = f(P, S)

This classic equation reminds you that any behaviour is a joint product of the person and the situation they are in, so a single explanation is rarely enough.

2. Why Study Psychology at IGCSE?

The CAIE IGCSE Psychology syllabus (0987) is designed as a first formal course in the subject. It assumes no prior study, yet it demands real academic rigour: you must describe studies accurately, explain theories clearly, and evaluate evidence critically.

CAIE IGCSE

Typical topic areas include cognitive processes such as memory and perception, social influence and group behaviour, developmental psychology including attachment, biological psychology covering the brain and nervous system, and individual differences such as atypical behaviour and mental health. Research methods are embedded throughout and are examined directly, not treated as an optional extra.

Beyond the exam, the course builds transferable skills: designing fair tests, handling data, writing structured arguments, and thinking ethically about people. These matter in A Level Psychology, in medicine, law, education, marketing and data science, and in everyday life.

3. The Five Key Approaches |

Cambridge organises psychological knowledge into broad approaches, sometimes called perspectives. Each approach asks a different kind of question and uses different evidence, so learning to label an explanation correctly is a core exam skill.

Genes, neurons, hormones, brain structureWhich brain area is active during recall?
Memory, attention, thinking, internal processingHow is information encoded and stored?
Influence of others, groups, conformity, obedienceWhy do people obey an unfair order?
Change across the lifespan, attachment, early experienceHow does early bonding shape later relationships?
Variation between people, atypical behaviour, mental healthWhen does behaviour become a disorder?

In Year 8, practise a simple habit: after reading any explanation, say out loud which approach it uses and what evidence would support it. This single habit will make your IGCSE answers far more precise.

4. Research Methods I: Experiments and Variables |

An experiment allows a researcher to establish cause and effect. The independent variable (IV) is manipulated by the researcher; the dependent variable (DV) is measured. All other variables must be controlled, otherwise they become confounding variables and spoil the conclusion.

IV → DV (all other variables held constant)

Participants are usually split into an experimental condition and a control condition. A laboratory experiment offers high control and easy replication but may feel artificial; a field experiment is more natural but harder to control; a natural experiment uses an IV that already exists, such as age or a life event.

Two threats appear constantly in exam answers: demand characteristics, where participants guess the aim and change their behaviour, and investigator effects, where the researcher unconsciously influences results. Reliability means consistency; validity means measuring what you claim to measure.

5. Research Methods II: Non-Experimental Techniques |

Not all questions can be tested experimentally, especially when ethics or practicality get in the way. Non-experimental methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, case studies and correlations.

Correlation coefficient: r = −1 ⋯ 0 ⋯ +1

A correlation of +0.8 means the two measures rise together; −0.8 means one rises as the other falls. Crucially, correlation never proves causation: a third variable may explain both.

6. Core Concept: Nature versus Nurture |

The nature-nurture debate asks whether behaviour is mainly produced by inherited biology or by experience and environment. Nature arguments point to genes, hormones, brain structure and evolutionary history; nurture arguments point to parenting, culture, education, peers and opportunity.

Evidence comes from twin studies, which compare identical (monozygotic) twins with non-identical (dizygotic) twins, and from adoption studies, which separate genetic from environmental influence. If identical twins are more similar than non-identical twins on a trait, genetics is likely to be involved.

Modern psychology rejects a simple either-or answer. Most traits are the result of interaction: a genetic tendency may only appear in certain environments, and an environment may have little effect without a certain genetic predisposition.

7. Core Concept: The Brain and Behaviour |

Biological psychology explains behaviour through the nervous system. A neuron transmits information as an electrical impulse along its axon, then releases neurotransmitters across a synapse to the next neuron. Drugs, stress and sleep all alter this chemical signalling.

The cerebral cortex is divided into four lobes: frontal (planning, decision making, movement), parietal (touch and spatial processing), temporal (hearing, memory, language comprehension) and occipital (vision). The frontal lobe is often described as the brain's control centre, which is why damage there can change personality and self-control.

Two cases are worth remembering early. Broca's area in the left frontal lobe is linked to speech production, and Wernicke's area in the left temporal lobe is linked to understanding language. The classic case of Phineas Gage, whose frontal lobe was damaged by an iron rod, is still used to argue that brain structure shapes behaviour.

8. Cognitive Psychology: Memory and Attention |

The multi-store model of memory, proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin, describes three stores in sequence: sensory memory, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Information moves between them through attention, rehearsal and retrieval.

Sensory 感觉记忆Very large 极大Less than 1 second 不足 1 秒Modality specific 依通道而定

Forgetting is explained in several ways: interference, where similar memories disrupt each other; retrieval failure, where the memory exists but the cue does not; and decay through lack of use. Chunking and spaced rehearsal are practical ways to strengthen memory.

Memory is also reconstructive. Bartlett's work suggested we store schemas and rebuild memories when we recall them, and Loftus and Palmer showed that the wording of a question can shift what a witness reports. This is why leading questions are treated so seriously in real investigations.

9. Social and Developmental Psychology |

Social psychology studies how other people shape our behaviour. Asch found that many participants agreed with an obviously wrong answer about line lengths when a unanimous group gave that answer, demonstrating conformity.

Milgram's obedience studies showed that ordinary people would follow an authority figure's instruction to give what they believed were painful electric shocks. The finding is powerful but ethically controversial, which makes it ideal material for evaluation practice.

Developmental psychology asks how behaviour changes across the lifespan. Attachment theory argues that the early bond with a caregiver forms an internal working model that shapes later relationships. Ainsworth's Strange Situation classified patterns such as secure, insecure-avoidant and insecure-resistant attachment.

Cognitive development is often summarised through stage theories, which propose that children think in qualitatively different ways at different ages. Stage theories are memorable and useful, but critics argue they underestimate children's abilities and overstate the uniformity of development.
