📚 Year 8 SQA Sociology: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference | SQA
Welcome to your quick revision guide for Year 8 SQA Sociology. Although Sociology is not a subject full of mathematical equations, it does have its own 'formulas' — key relationships and models that help us understand how society works. This handbook collects the most important sociological 'formulas' and 'theorems' you need to know. Each one is presented with a simple statement, followed by a clear explanation, so you can see how different parts of the social world fit together.
1. The Sociological Perspective Formula |
Seeing the general in the particular and the strange in the familiar is the core formula of sociological thinking. Instead of assuming that individual choices explain everything, sociologists look for patterns shaped by social forces like class, gender and ethnicity.
Sociological Perspective = Personal Trouble + Public Issue
When one person loses a job, it may seem like a personal trouble. When 10,000 people in a region lose their jobs, it is a public issue linked to economic structure. Sociology teaches us to connect these two levels.
2. Socialisation Equation |
Socialisation is the lifelong process by which we learn the norms, values and roles of our society. It can be broken down into two main stages that combine to shape our social self.
Social Self = Primary Socialisation + Secondary Socialisation
Primary socialisation happens in early childhood, mainly through the family. We learn language, basic values and close emotional bonds. Secondary socialisation takes place later through schools, peer groups, media and other institutions, building more complex social skills and identities.
3. Culture Formula |
Culture is everything that makes up the way of life of a group of people. It includes both material and non‑material elements, and together they create the world we live in every day.
Culture = Values + Norms + Symbols + Material Objects
- Values are shared ideas about what is good and desirable.
- Norms are rules about how people should behave.
- Symbols such as flags, gestures or words carry meaning.
- Material objects include technology, clothing and art.
4. Identity Construction Theorem |
Identity is not fixed at birth — it is built through a dynamic interaction between how we see ourselves and how others see us. This theorem highlights the two main sources of identity.
Identity = Self‑Concept + Ascribed & Achieved Statuses
Self‑concept is your internal idea of who you are. Ascribed status is given at birth (e.g. sex, ethnicity), while achieved status comes from effort (e.g. student, athlete). Sociologists also emphasise the 'looking‑glass self' — we see ourselves through the reactions of others.
5. Social Stratification Formula |
Stratification describes the way society ranks groups of people in a hierarchy. This ranking is not random; it follows a pattern based on three main resources.
Social Class Position ≈ Wealth + Power + Prestige
Wealth includes income and property. Power is the ability to influence others and make decisions. Prestige is the respect attached to a person's occupation or lifestyle. Together they determine if someone belongs to the upper, middle or working class.
6. Family Function Theorem |
From a functionalist perspective, the family exists because it performs essential tasks for society. These functions can be summarised in a simple equation.
Family = Reproduction + Primary Socialisation + Economic Support + Emotional Care
Families bring new members into society (reproduction), teach children norms and values (primary socialisation), provide food and shelter (economic support) and offer love and comfort (emotional care). Different family forms — such as nuclear, extended or lone‑parent — can perform these functions, though not always equally well.
7. Education System Function Formula |
Like the family, education also has key social functions. Understanding these helps explain why schooling is compulsory and why the curriculum looks the way it does.
Education = Knowledge Transmission + Socialisation + Allocation & Selection
Schools pass on academic knowledge and skills. They also socialise children into the 'hidden curriculum' of obedience, punctuality and competition. Finally, schools sort and select students for different future roles through testing and qualifications — a process some sociologists see as fair, while others believe it reproduces inequality.
8. Media Effects Theorem |
Media does not automatically inject ideas into our brains. Sociologists propose a more complex relationship between media content and audience response.
Media Influence = Media Message × Audience Interpretation × Social Context
The same news report or advertisement can have different effects depending on how audiences interpret it. Interpretation is shaped by age, gender, class and prior beliefs. Moreover, the social context — such as whether people discuss the content with friends — can reinforce or challenge the influence.
9. Deviance and Strain Theorem |
Why do some people break rules? Robert Merton's strain theory provides a formula that links deviance to the gap between culturally approved goals and the legitimate means to achieve them.
Deviance = Cultural Goals − Legitimate Means
When society emphasises success (e.g. wealth) but does not give everyone equal access to education and good jobs, a strain is created. People may respond by innovating (crime), ritualising (giving up on goals), retreating (dropping out) or rebelling (creating new goals).
10. Research Methods Combination Rule |
Sociologists collect evidence using different methods. No single method is perfect, so combining them often gives the most reliable picture of social life.
Robust Research = Quantitative Data + Qualitative Data
Quantitative data is numerical — from surveys, statistics, experiments — and helps identify broad patterns. Qualitative data is in‑depth and word‑based — from interviews, observations, diaries — and reveals meanings and feelings. Using both together is called mixed methods.
11. Social Change Equation |
Societies are not static. They change through a combination of forces that push and pull social structures in new directions.
ial Change = Technological Innovation + Demographic Shifts + Cultural Diffusion + Conflict
Technology creates new ways of living (e.g. the internet). Demographic shifts like migration or ageing populations alter community needs. Cultural diffusion spreads ideas across borders. Conflict, whether peaceful protest or revolution, directly challenges existing power structures.
