📚 Case Study Practical Exercise |
This practical guide takes you through a real drama case study, using a short original scene to develop key performance and analytical skills. By working step by step, you will learn how to interpret a script, make creative choices, and evaluate your work effectively. Let's begin with the scene 'The Forgotten Promise', set in a school hallway.
1. The Script and First Impressions |
Before any analysis, read the script aloud to grasp the story. Read it once silently, then once standing up, then once more with a pencil in hand. As you read, notice the language, the punctuation, and any clues about emotion. Do not try to "act" yet - your only job at this stage is to receive the text and record your honest first reactions in the margin.
Scene: School hallway, after final bell. ALEX leans against a locker. JORDAN enters, looking down.
ALEX: (not looking up) "You're late."
JORDAN: "I know."
ALEX: "Three days late."
JORDAN: "I said I know."
ALEX: (finally looking up) "You said a lot of things."
JORDAN: "Are you going to let me explain?"
ALEX: "I'm going to let you stand there and decide what you actually want to say. I've had three days of it."
JORDAN: "It wasn't about you."
ALEX: "It never is."
(A pause. JORDAN takes a step forward; ALEX turns back to the locker.)
JORDAN: "The promise was mine to keep. I know that."
ALEX: "Then why are you telling me instead of keeping it?"
(JORDAN has no answer. The bell rings again in the distance; neither of them moves.)
First-impression questions to answer in one sentence each: Who wants something? Who is afraid? What happened before the scene began? What is the worst possible outcome for each character? Write your answers before you discuss the scene with anyone else, because discussion quickly overwrites raw instinct.
2. Close Reading: Language, Punctuation and Subtext |
Drama marks are usually not awarded for loud emotion but for precise observation. Look at how short the lines are. Alex speaks in fragments of three or four words; Jordan answers with "I know". Short lines create pressure. The playwright has deliberately removed adjectives so that the actors must supply the feeling.
Punctuation is stage direction in disguise. A full stop is a closed door; a question mark is a demand; an ellipsis is a hole the actor must fall into. "It never is." ends with a full stop, not an exclamation mark - which tells you the line is delivered flat, almost tired, and therefore far more damaging.
It never is."
Subtext is what the character actually wants, as opposed to what the words literally say. Alex says "I've had three days of it" - literally a statement about time, but the subtext is "I have been counting, which means I care, and I hate that I care."
3. Character Objectives, Obstacles and Tactics |
Every line a character speaks is an action, not a mood. Build each performance decision on three questions: What do I want right now (objective)? What stops me getting it (obstacle)? What am I doing to the other person to get it (tactic)?
Objective + Obstacle + Tactic → Action → Reaction = Scene Momentum
Apply this to the hallway scene. Alex's objective might be "to make Jordan admit the promise was broken"; the obstacle is pride and three days of silence; the tactic shifts from punishment ("Three days late") to invitation ("decide what you actually want to say"). Jordan's objective is "to be forgiven without having to say the truth aloud"; the obstacle is that Alex refuses to make it easy; the tactic moves from obedience to confession and finally to silence.
When a tactic stops working, the actor must change it. That change is what an audience reads as "acting". A scene where the tactic never changes feels static no matter how much emotion is added.
4. Status, Space and Proxemics |
Status is negotiated through space. Alex starts leaning on a locker - a relaxed, ownership posture that claims the hallway. Jordan enters "looking down", which is already a low-status choice. The distance between two performers is called proxemics, and it tells the audience who holds power at any second.
Try three versions of the same scene and record the difference. In version one, Jordan stays three metres away the whole time and never crosses the space. In version two, Jordan advances on every line, forcing Alex backwards. In version three, Jordan advances once, on "The promise was mine to keep", and Alex immediately closes the gap by turning away. All three are valid, but they say different things about who is winning.
The general rule for the exam: a change of status must be visible in the body before it is heard in the voice. Movement before words.
5. Voice, Pace and Pause |
Vocal work in the assessed performance is judged on control, not volume. The four tools you can name in a written commentary are pace, pitch, pause and emphasis. Name them explicitly when you analyse your own work, because unlabelled vocal choices cannot be credited.
Notice where the playwright has already placed pauses for you. The stage direction "(A pause. JORDAN takes a step forward)" is a gift: the pause exists so that the audience can feel the promise being remembered. Do not fill it. An unfilled pause of three seconds reads as enormous tension; a filled pause with fidgeting reads as nerves, which is a different story.
Try the "one word, one breath" exercise on the line "Then why are you telling me instead of keeping it?" Say it with a breath before "why", before "telling" and before "keeping". The line becomes four separate accusations instead of one long complaint.
6. Physicality and Gesture |
Gesture should be earned. Three forms are worth separating: the illustrative gesture (a hand describing the three days), the emphatic gesture (a fist on a word), and the psychological gesture (an unconscious movement that reveals hidden feeling). Examiners reward the third most highly because it cannot be faked by a checklist.
Look at Alex's opening: "(not looking up)". This is a physical instruction that contradicts the words. Alex speaks to Jordan but does not give Jordan the dignity of eye contact. The actor's task is to find the exact moment of the look up - the text gives it to you on "You said a lot of things" - and to make that moment land like a door opening.
Meanwhile, Jordan's "looking down" must be physicalised through the spine, not just the chin. A dropped chin alone reads as shyness; a dropped chin with a curved upper back and forward-tilted pelvis reads as shame and exhaustion. Detail at this level is what separates a Level 6 performance from a Level 4 one.
7. Staging the Scene: A Blocking Plan |
Blocking is the map of where bodies move and why. A useful blocking plan records four things for every beat: the line, the position, the action, and the intention. Use the table below as a template and adapt it to your own staging.
| 1 | "You're late." | Alex at locker, Jordan centre-left | To punish |
| 2 | "Three days late." | No movement | To make him count |
| 3 | "You said a lot of things." | Alex looks up; frozen tableau | To expose |
| 4 | "It wasn't about you." | Jordan steps forward | To defend |
| 5 | "The promise was mine to keep." | Jordan close; Alex turns back to locker | To confess and retreat |
A strong blocking plan is economical: two or three significant moves are more powerful than constant crossing. Every move should be triggered by a change in tactic from Section 3. If you cannot say why a character moved, cut the move.
8. Writing a Director's Concept |
Before rehearsing, write a director's concept in no more than 150 words. A concept is not a plot summary; it is a single controlling idea that explains every choice you make. For 'The Forgotten Promise' a workable concept might be: "This is not a scene about a broken promise, but about two people discovering that forgiveness is harder than anger."
From that controlling idea, every design decision can be justified. If forgiveness is the real subject, then the lighting should not go dark on the final pause; it should hold steady and bright, so that the audience is forced to sit inside the discomfort rather than be released from it.
You can also justify sound: the second bell mentioned in the stage direction can be pre-recorded and played slightly too loud, so that the moment of silence afterwards feels louder than the bell.
Written work in drama is marked on evidence, not opinion. Use PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link. The explanation must connect a specific theatrical skill to a specific effect on the audience.
Evidence (quote or stage direction) → Explain (skill × effect) → Link (back to intention)
A weak sentence says: "I used a pause to show Alex was sad." A strong sentence says: "In the third beat I held a three-second pause before 'It never is.' I combined this with a lowered pitch and a fixed gaze to force the audience to interpret the silence themselves; the effect is that the audience imagines the three missing days more vividly than any line could describe."
Remember the rule of specificity: name the skill, name the moment, name the effect. Two precise examples always beat five vague ones.
10. Rehearsal Log and Self-Evaluation |
Keep a rehearsal log after every session. A log entry should record what you tried, what happened, and what you will change next time. This is the raw material for your self-evaluation, and examiners can tell the difference between a log written after the fact and one written honestly in the moment.
| Session 1 | Status and proxemics | The single forward step landed | Keep Alex still until beat 3 |
| Session 2 | Pause and breath | Three seconds felt shorter on stage | Count silently, do not rush |
| Session 3 | Audience feedback | Two viewers read Alex as cold | Add one moment of near-crying |
A good self-evaluation answers three questions honestly: What did I intend? What did the audience actually receive? What is the gap between the two, and what is my single biggest priority for improvement?
11. Assessment Criteria and Common Pitfalls |
Most drama assessment grids reward six things: vocal and physical skill, characterisation and intention, use of space, responsiveness to others, understanding of the text, and reflective analysis. Notice that only one of the six is about the written word, yet most students spend most of their revision time writing.
| Playing "angry" from line one | No room to build; the scene is flat | Start at 40%, peak at the pause |
| Speaking over the partner | Destroys reaction and listening marks | Rehearse with a stopwatch, not a mirror |
| Filling every pause with movement | Kills tension; reads as nerves | One stillness exercise per rehearsal |
| Vague written analysis | No nameable skill, so no credit | Always name skill, moment and effect |
One further pitfall is worth naming: rehearsing only for yourself. In a two-hander, half your marks come from how you respond in the gap between your partner's line and your own. Rehearse the listening, not only the speaking.
12. Extended Task and Model Answer |
Now write the full case study using the eight steps above. Your submission should contain: a close-reading annotation of the script, a character objective and tactic breakdown for both roles, a blocking plan, a 150-word director's concept, three rehearsal log entries, and one PEEL paragraph of analysis.
Here is a model PEEL paragraph for reference. Point: I used proxemics to dramatise the shift in power. Evidence: the stage direction "(A pause. JORDAN takes a step forward)" was extended into a slow three-step advance. Explain: I combined this advance with a raised chin but a still-lowered gaze, so that the body claimed space while the eyes refused it, showing a character who is rebuilding confidence but not yet ready to look at the person he has hurt; the effect on the audience is discomfort, because they see the courage and the shame at the same time. Link: this supports my director's concept, in which forgiveness, not anger, is the true subject of the scene.
Finally, mark your own work against the criteria in Section 11 before you submit it, and write down the one change you would make if you had one more rehearsal. That sentence is often the most valuable line in the whole case study.
