1. The Elements of Art |

Line is a continuous mark made on a surface. It can vary in width, direction, and length, and can be used to define shapes, suggest movement, or express emotion.

Shape is a two-dimensional area enclosed by a line. Shapes can be geometric (like circles and squares) or organic (freeform and irregular).

Form refers to three-dimensional objects having volume and thickness. In art, form is often created using shading to give the illusion of depth.

Space is the area around, between, or within objects. Positive space is the subject itself, while negative space is the background or empty area.

Colour is produced by light reflecting off surfaces. It has three properties: hue (the name of the colour), value (lightness or darkness), and intensity (brightness or dullness).

Value describes how light or dark a colour or tone is. Artists use a range of values to create contrast and the illusion of form.

Texture refers to the surface quality of an object, either actual (tactile) or implied (visual). It can be rough, smooth, bumpy, or soft.

2. The Principles of Design |

Balance is the distribution of visual weight in an artwork. Symmetrical balance mirrors elements on either side; asymmetrical balance uses different elements to achieve stability.

Contrast creates visual interest by placing opposite elements (such as light and dark, rough and smooth) near each other.

Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer's attention. Artists can create emphasis through contrast, placement, or size.

Movement guides the viewer's eye through the artwork, often using lines, shapes, or directional cues.

Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol throughout the work. Rhythm refers to a repetition of elements to create a visual tempo.

Unity is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the artwork, creating a sense of completeness.

3. Colour Theory and the Colour Wheel |

The colour wheel is a visual representation of colours arranged according to their chromatic relationship. Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be created by mixing other colours. Secondary colours (green, orange, purple) are made by mixing two primary colours. Tertiary colours are created by mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary colour.

Colour Category Examples

Complementary colours are opposite each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green. They create strong contrast. Analogous colours sit next to each other and produce harmonious effects.

4. Tonal Values and Shading Techniques |

Tonal value refers to the lightness or darkness of a colour. A full tonal range from white to black helps create the illusion of three-dimensional form.

Hatching uses parallel lines to indicate shadow; cross-hatching adds a second layer of lines at an angle to deepen the tone. Stippling uses dots, while blending smooths transitions.

When shading a sphere, the highlight is the brightest spot, the mid-tone is the base colour, the core shadow is the darkest area, and reflected light bounces from the surface below.

5. Observational Drawing |

Observational drawing involves carefully studying a real object, person, or scene and recording what you see. It improves hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.

Key techniques include measuring proportions using a pencil held at arm's length, checking angles, and constantly comparing parts to the whole. Gesture drawing captures movement quickly.

Beginners should focus on shapes and relationships rather than trying to draw from memory. Practice blind contour drawing to strengthen observation – drawing without looking at the paper.

6. Composition and Layout |

Composition is the arrangement of visual elements in an artwork. The rule of thirds divides
