Each section below follows the same pattern: definition, example, memory hook and exam move. Read the English paragraph first, then the Chinese one, then cover them up and test yourself from the mnemonic table alone.
下文每一节都遵循同样的结构:定义、例句、记忆钩子和考场应用。先读英文段落,再读中文段落,然后遮住文字,只看记忆表格来自我检测。
1. Simile | 明喻
A simile compares two different things using the words "like" or "as". For example, "The night sky was like a velvet curtain." This device makes descriptions more vivid and relatable by highlighting a surprising similarity between two unlike things.
明喻使用 "像" 或 "如"(like / as)将两个不同事物进行对比。例如:"夜空宛如天鹅绒幕布。" 这种手法通过突出两个本不相似事物之间的相似点,使描写更生动、更易于理解。
Simile = Similar + like / as
Memory trick: The word "simile" shares its first three letters with "similar". When you see "like" or "as", think "simile = similar". A fun phrase to lock it in: "A smile is like a simile – it brightens the comparison!"
记忆技巧:"simile" 的前三个字母与 "similar"(相似的)相同。当你看到 "like" 或 "as",就想 "明喻 = 相似"。一句趣味口诀助你牢记:"微笑(smile)就像明喻(simile)——它让比较更灿烂!"
- Exam move: quote the simile, then explain the picture it creates and the mood it builds. / 答题步骤:先引用明喻,再解释它营造的画面与氛围。
- Watch out: "He ran as fast as he could" only states a fact; it is not a figurative simile. / 注意:"He ran as fast as he could" 只陈述事实,并非修辞意义上的明喻。

| Simile = Similar, with "like" or "as" | 明喻:相似,配上"像"或"如" |
2. Metaphor | 隐喻
A metaphor directly states that one thing is another, without using "like" or "as". For example, "Time is a thief." It creates a powerful image by suggesting a hidden connection between two unlike things. When a metaphor is developed across several sentences or a whole poem, it is called an extended metaphor.
隐喻直接说一事物是另一事物,不使用 "像" 或 "如"。例如:"时间是个小偷。" 它通过暗示两事物之间隐秘的关联,营造强烈的意象。如果隐喻在若干句子甚至整首诗中持续发展,就称为"延伸隐喻"。
Metaphor = Meta (beyond) + phor (carry) → carrying meaning beyond the literal
Memory aid: "Meta" means beyond or change. Think of a metaphor as a meta-transformation – it changes one thing into another. Rhyme to remember: "Metaphor, makes more – direct comparing galore!"
记忆辅助:"Meta" 意为超越或变化。把隐喻想成一次元变换——它将一物变成另一物。记忆口诀:"隐喻隐喻,直接比拟,更多神奇!"
- Test it fast: if you can insert "like" between the two nouns, it is probably a simile, not a metaphor. / 快速检验:如果能在两个名词之间加进 "like",那多半是明喻,不是隐喻。
- Strong answers comment on effect words: "conveys", "suggests", "implies", "highlights". / 高分答案常用效果动词:conveys(传达)、suggests(暗示)、implies(暗指)、highlights(突出)。

| Metaphor = Meta-change, no "like" | 隐喻:超越改变,不用"像" |
3. Personification | 拟人
Personification gives human qualities, feelings, actions or characteristics to inanimate objects, animals or abstract ideas. For example, "The wind whispered through the trees" or "The cruel sea swallowed the little boat." It helps readers feel that the world of the text is alive and emotional.
拟人把人的特质、情感、动作或特征赋予无生命的物体、动物或抽象概念。例如:"风在树间低语",或"残酷的大海吞没了小船"。它让读者感到文本中的世界是活的、有情感的。
Personification = Person + ification → pretend it is a person
Memory trick: Split the word into "person" and "fiction". Any sentence where an object behaves like a person is person-ification in action. Chant it: "If a thing can smile or cry, personification is why."
记忆技巧:把单词拆成 "person"(人)和 "fiction"(虚构)。凡是物体像人一样行动的句子,就是拟人在起作用。口诀:"物会笑、物会哭,拟人手法藏此处。"
- Do not over-claim: only label it personification if human behaviour is clearly given. / 不要滥用:只有当确实赋予人类行为时,才算拟人。
- Effect to name: makes the scene dramatic, sympathetic, threatening or lively. / 可点明的效果:使场景更戏剧化、更具同情、更具威胁感或更生动。

4. Pathetic Fallacy | 情感误置
Pathetic fallacy is a special form of personification in which weather or nature mirrors the mood of a character or a scene. A storm rages before a death; sunshine breaks through when a conflict is resolved; grey drizzle hangs over a lonely walk home. The term comes from Greek "pathos" (feeling) and Latin "fallacia" (a false idea).
情感误置是拟人的一种特殊形式:天气或自然景象映照人物或场景的情绪。死亡之前狂风大作;矛盾化解后阳光破云;孤独的归途上下着灰蒙蒙的细雨。该术语源自希腊语 pathos(情感)与拉丁语 fallacia(虚假的观念)。
Pathetic fallacy = Pathos (feeling) + placed onto the weather
Memory trick: Think "weather = mood". If the sky is crying, the character probably is too. A wrong weather choice would be a "fallacy" (a mistake in logic) – the writer knows it is not real emotion, but uses it on purpose.
记忆技巧:记住"天气 = 心情"。天空在哭,人物多半也在哭。把情感放在天气上,从字面看是不合逻辑的"谬误"(fallacy),但作者是故意为之。
- Do not confuse it with personification alone: pathetic fallacy always links nature to emotion. / 不要只与拟人混为一谈:情感误置一定把自然与情绪相连。
- Useful sentence: "The storm foreshadows danger and mirrors the narrator's fear." / 实用句式:"暴风雨预示危险,并映照叙述者的恐惧。"

5. Onomatopoeia | 拟声词
Onomatopoeia refers to words that imitate the sounds they describe: buzz, crash, sizzle, hiss, thud, crackle, splash, whoosh. Writers use it to create auditory imagery so that readers almost hear the scene.
拟声词指模仿所描述声音的词语:buzz(嗡嗡)、crash(哗啦撞碎)、sizzle(滋滋作响)、hiss(嘶嘶)、thud(砰的一声)、crackle(噼啪)、splash(扑通)、whoosh(嗖)。作者用它创造听觉意象,让读者几乎能听见现场。
Onomatopoeia = Ono + mato + poeia → "name-making"
Memory trick: Chant "Bang! Crash! Sizzle! Hiss! – that is onomatopoeia, do not miss!" The word itself is long, so break it into three beats: o-no-MATO-poeia, and clap each beat while saying a sound word.
记忆技巧:口诀 "Bang! Crash! Sizzle! Hiss! 这就是 onomatopoeia,别忘了它!" 单词很长,就拆成三拍来读:o-no-MATO-poeia,每拍同时说出一个声音词并拍手。
- Effect to name: creates atmosphere, tension, speed or realism. / 可点明的效果:营造气氛、紧张感、速度感或真实感。
- Pair it with alliteration for a strong marks-winning comment. / 与头韵结合分析,更易拿高分。

6. Alliteration and Sibilance | 头韵与咝音
Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of nearby words: "the wild, windy waste", "peter picked purple plums". Sibilance is a narrower device: the repetition of "s", "sh" and "z" sounds, as in "softly, silently, the snake slid".
头韵指相邻词语开头重复同一个辅音音素:"the wild, windy waste"(荒凉狂野的荒野)、"peter picked purple plums"。咝音则是更窄的一种手法:重复 "s"、"sh"、"z" 音,如 "softly, silently, the snake slid"(蛇悄无声息地滑过)。
Alliteration = All letters alike | Sibilance = Snake sound
Memory trick: Alliteration starts with "A", and "all" the words share a sound. Sibilance starts with "S", and "s" sounds like a snake. Two words, two letters, two sounds – that is your whole revision card.
记忆技巧:Alliteration 以 A 开头,就是"所有(all)"相邻词共享一个音;Sibilance 以 S 开头,就是"蛇(snake)"的咝咝声。两个词、两个字母、两个声音,一张复习卡就够了。
- Sibilance often suggests secrecy, menace, softness or sleep. / 咝音常暗示秘密、威胁、柔和或睡眠。
- Alliteration often stresses key ideas or creates rhythm and tone. / 头韵常用来强调关键概念,或制造节奏与语气。
| Device | Example | 中文记忆 |
|---|---|---|
| Alliteration | dark, deep, dangerous | 开头辅音相同 |
| Sibilance | silent, sinister shadows | s / sh / z 音重复 |
7. Hyperbole and Oxymoron | 夸张与矛盾修辞
Hyperbole is deliberate exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally: "I have told you a million times", "my bag weighs a tonne". An oxymoron places two contradictory words side by side: "bitter sweet", "deafening silence", "living death", "wise fool".
夸张(hyperbole)是故意的夸大,不能按字面理解:"我已经跟你说过一百万次了""我的书包重得像一吨"。矛盾修辞(oxymoron)把两个相互矛盾的词并置:"苦甜""震耳欲聋的寂静""活着的死亡""聪明的傻瓜"。
Hyper = over | Oxy = sharp + Moron = foolish → a sharp foolishness
Memory trick: "Hyper" is like a hyperactive child – over the top, too much. For oxymoron, imagine a "sharp moron": two opposites packed into one phrase, which is exactly why it feels strange and memorable.
记忆技巧:"Hyper" 让人想到 hyperactive(多动)的孩子——用力过猛、太过头。至于 oxymoron,想象一个"尖锐的傻瓜":两个相反词挤在一个短语里,正是这种怪异感让它难忘。
- Hyperbole effect: humour, emphasis, frustration or drama. / 夸张的效果:幽默、强调、沮丧或戏剧性。
- Oxymoron effect: shows tension, conflict or a confusing situation. / 矛盾修辞的效果:表现张力、冲突或令人困惑的情境。

8. Imagery | 意象
Imagery is descriptive language that appeals to the five senses and creates a picture in the reader's mind. Good writers mix visual, auditory, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste) and tactile (touch) detail so the scene feels real. Imagery is not one device but a whole toolkit.
意象是能激发五种感官、在读者脑海中形成画面的描写性语言。优秀作者会混合视觉、听觉、嗅觉、味觉和触觉细节,让场景显得真实。意象不是单一手法,而是一整套工具箱。
Imagery = Image → "I see it" in my mind
Memory trick: The word "image" literally means a picture. If the sentence works as a picture, a sound, a smell, a taste or a texture in your head, it is imagery. Test yourself: close your eyes after reading a line and describe what appears.
记忆技巧:"image" 本身就是"图像"。如果一句话能在你脑中变成画面、声音、气味、味道或触感,它就是意象。自测法:读完一行后闭上眼睛,描述你"看到"了什么。
- Exam move: use the phrase "This creates a vivid impression of ..." to introduce effect. / 答题句式:用 "This creates a vivid impression of ..." 引出效果分析。
- Link imagery to mood, tone and theme, never leave it as a list. / 把意象与氛围、语气和主题相连,不要只罗列。
| Sense | Example | 中文记忆 |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | a silver ribbon of river | 看得见 |
| Auditory | the clatter of hooves | 听得见 |
| Olfactory | the smell of rain on dust | 闻得到 |
| Tactile | cold glass against her cheek | 触得到 |
9. Irony | 反讽
Irony is the gap between what is said or expected and what actually happens or is meant. Verbal irony means saying the opposite of what you mean ("What lovely weather" during a storm). Situational irony means the opposite of what we expect occurs (a fire station burns down). Dramatic irony means the audience knows something the characters do not.
反讽是"所说或所期待"与"实际所说或所发生"之间的落差。言语反讽指说与想表达的相反(暴风雨中说 "What lovely weather")。情境反讽指发生的事与预期相反(消防站被烧毁)。戏剧性反讽指观众知道而剧中人物不知道的事。
Irony = the opposite of what you expect
Memory trick: Call it "opposite day" in a text. If you can finish the sentence "We expect ..., but instead ...", you have found irony. For dramatic irony, remember: the audience knows first, the character suffers last.
记忆技巧:把它当作文本里的"反话日"。如果你能补全句子"我们期待……,但结果却……",你就找到了反讽。戏剧性反讽的记忆法:观众先知道,人物后遭殃。
- Do not confuse irony with coincidence. / 不要把反讽与巧合混为一谈。
- Effect: creates humour, suspense or a sense of injustice. / 效果:制造幽默、悬念或不公之感。
