1. Units and Measurements |
Every scientific observation relies on accurate measurements. In physics, we use SI base units: metre (m) for length, kilogram (kg) for mass, second (s) for time, ampere (A) for electric current, kelvin (K) for temperature, and so on. Prefixes like kilo- (10³), centi- (10⁻²) and milli- (10⁻³) help us express very large or very small quantities conveniently.
Measuring instruments such as rulers, stopwatches, balances and thermometers have limited precision. You should always record measurements to the nearest half division and be aware of parallax error when reading scales. Repeated readings improve reliability and allow you to calculate a mean.
2. Forces and Motion |
A force is a push or a pull that can change the speed, direction or shape of an object. Forces are measured in newtons (N) using a spring balance. Common forces include weight (gravity), tension, friction, air resistance, magnetic force and electrostatic force.
object will accelerate, decelerate or change direction. This idea is summarised by Newton' First Law of Motion. Acceleration (a) is the change in velocity per unit time: a = Δv / t.
3. Friction and Air Resistance |
Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact. It can be useful (e.g. allowing tyres to grip the road) but also causes wear and wastes energy as heat. The amount of friction depends on the roughness of the surfaces and the force pressing them together.
Air resistance (drag) is a type of friction an object experiences when moving through air. It increases with speed and with the cross-sectional area of the object. Streamlined shapes reduce air resistance, which is why racing cars and cyclists adopt sleek profiles. Eventually, a falling object reaches terminal velocity when air resistance equals weight.
4. Density and Buoyancy |
Density (ρ) tells us how much mass is packed into a given volume. It is calculated using the formula:
ρ = m / V
where m is mass (kg) and V is volume (m³). The unit of density is kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), although g/cm³ is also common. An object will float on a liquid if its density is less than the density of the liquid.
Buoyancy (upthrust) is the upward force exerted by a fluid on a submerged object. Archimedes' principle states that the buoyant force equals the weight of fluid displaced. This explains why a dense steel ship can float — its hull is made hollow, so the overall density of the ship is less than that of water.
5. Energy Forms and Transfers |
Energy can exist in many forms: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, thermal, chemical, electrical, light and sound. The unit of energy is the joule (J). Energy can never be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another — this is the law of conservation of energy.
For example, when a ball is dropped, gravitational potential energy converts to kinetic energy. On hitting the ground, some energy turns into sound and thermal energy. In a circuit, chemical energy in a battery transforms into electrical energy, which then becomes light and heat in a bulb.
Efficiency measures how much useful energy is transferred. It is calculated as:
Efficiency = (useful output energy / total input energy) × 100%
6. Heat Transfer: Conduction, Convection and Radiation |
Thermal energy moves from hotter regions to cooler regions by three mechanisms. Conduction occurs mainly in solids: vibrating particles pass energy along without the material moving. Metals are good thermal conductors, while plastics and wood are insulators.
Convection happens in fluids (liquids and gases). As a fluid is heated, it expands, becomes less dense and rises. Cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place, creating a convection current. This is how radiators warm a room and how ocean currents flow.
Radiation is the transfer of energy by infrared electromagnetic waves. It does not require particles and can travel through a vacuum — this is how the Sun's energy reaches Earth. Dark, matte surfaces are good absorbers and emitters of infrared radiation; shiny, light surfaces reflect it.
7. Static Electricity | 静电
All matter is made of atoms containing positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons. Rubbing two insulating materials together can transfer electrons, leaving one object positively charged and the other negatively charged. This is static electricity.
Like charges repel each other; opposite charges attract. A charged object can also attract small neutral objects by inducing a separation of charge. Lightning is a dramatic example of static discharge, where electrons jump between clouds or from cloud to ground.
8. Simple Circuits |
An electric current is a flow of electric charge, usually carried by moving electrons in a wire. Current (I) is measured in amperes (A) using an ammeter connected in series. The voltage (potential difference, V) across a component is measured in volts (V) using a voltmeter in parallel.
In a series circuit, current is the same everywhere, but voltage is shared. In a parallel circuit, voltage across each branch is the same, but current splits. Resistance (R) is a measure of how difficult it is for current to flow and is measured in ohms (Ω). Using conductors, insulators and semiconductors is key to circuit design.
9. Magnetism and Electromagnets |
A magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Like poles repel; unlike poles attract. Magnetic materials such as iron, nickel and cobalt are attracted to magnets, and can be magnetised by stroking with a magnet or placing inside a coil carrying direct current.
An electromagnet is made by wrapping a coil of wire around a soft iron core. When current flows, a magnetic field is produced. The strength can be increased by using more turns of wire, increasing the current, or adding an iron core. Electromagnets are used in scrapyard cranes, electric bells and relays.
10. Light: Reflection and Refraction |
When light hits a smooth surface, it obeys the law of reflection: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, measured from the normal (a line perpendicular to the surface).
Refraction happens when light passes from one transparent medium to another (e.g. from air to glass) and changes speed, causing it to bend. If light enters a denser medium, it slows down and bends towards the normal. Lenses work by refracting light to converge or diverge rays, forming images.
11. Sound and Hearing |
Sound is produced by vibrating objects and travels as a longitudinal wave through a medium such as air, liquid or solid. It cannot travel through a vacuum. The speed of sound in air is roughly 340 m/s. Sound waves are characterised by their frequency (hertz, Hz), which determines pitch, and amplitude, which determines loudness.
Human hearing range is approximately 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz. Sounds above this are ultrasound, used in medical imaging and sonar. Echoes are reflections of sound and are used to measure distances. Shorter, thicker strings produce higher-pitched sounds, and longer, thinner strings produce lower-pitched sounds.
12. Our Solar System |
The Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids and comets. The Sun is a star at the centre, providing heat and light through nuclear fusion. The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) are rocky; the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are gas giants.
Gravity keeps planets in orbit around the Sun. The further a planet is from the Sun, the longer its orbital period. Earth's rotation causes day and night; its tilted axis and orbit cause the seasons. The Moon orbits Earth and reflects sunlight, showing phases as its position changes.
