1. What is Accounting? |
Accounting is the process of identifying, measuring, recording and communicating financial information so that people can make informed decisions. Imagine you run a small business selling handmade crafts. You would need to know how much money you spent on materials, how much you earned from sales and exactly how much profit you made. Accounting provides a structured way to keep track of all that information—not in your head, but in a clear, verifiable form that anyone can understand.
2. The Accounting Equation |
Everything you will learn in accounting is built on one fundamental equation that must always balance. It shows what a business owns and how those resources were paid for. The equation is:
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
Suppose you buy a laptop for schoolwork. If you paid £600 in cash, the laptop is an asset worth £600, and your cash fell by £600, so the equation stays balanced. If you borrowed £200 from your parents and used £400 of your own savings, then your new asset of £600 equals a liability of £200 plus your equity of £400. This simple idea is the heart of double-entry bookkeeping.
3. Assets, Liabilities and Equity |
Assets are resources a business controls with the expectation of future benefit, such as cash, inventory, furniture or machinery. Liabilities are the amounts a business owes to others—for example, bank loans or amounts due to suppliers. Equity represents the owner's claim on the assets after all liabilities have been settled; it includes the capital contributed by the owner and any retained profits. Learning to classify items into these three categories is one of the first skills you will master.
|---|---|---|
| Assets 资产 | Cash, inventory, computers | Debit balance normally |
| Liabilities 负债 | Loan, trade payables | Credit balance normally |
| Equity 权益 | Capital, retained earnings | Credit balance normally |
4. Revenue and Expenses |
Revenue is the income a business earns from its ordinary activities, such as selling goods or providing services. Expenses are the costs incurred to generate that revenue, like rent, wages and utility bills. The difference between revenue and expenses over a period of time gives us profit or loss. If revenue exceeds expenses, the business has made a profit; if expenses are higher, it has made a loss.
Profit (or Loss) = Revenue – Expenses
Understanding this relationship helps you see why recording every sale and every bill accurately matters. IGCSE Accounting will expect you to calculate profit from a list of transactions, so practising these simple subtraction exercises now will pay off.
5. Double-Entry Bookkeeping: Debits and Credits |
Double-entry bookkeeping means every transaction affects at least two accounts, and the total debits must always equal the total credits. This rule keeps the accounting equation in balance. The terms 'debit' (Dr) and 'credit' (Cr) simply refer to the left and right sides of an account. For asset accounts, an increase is recorded on the debit side and a decrease on the credit side. For liabilities and equity, the opposite applies: an increase is a credit and a decrease is a debit. Revenue accounts increase on the credit side, while expense accounts increase on the debit side.
| Account Type 账户类别 | To Increase 增加方向 | To Decrease 减少方向 |
|---|---|---|
A common way to remember this is: DEAD CLIC – Debit Expenses, Assets and Drawings; Credit Liabilities, Income and Capital. As you practise making entries, the logic will soon feel natural.
6. Recording Transactions: Journals and Ledgers |
Transactions are first recorded in a journal, which is like a diary showing the date, accounts affected and amounts. Each journal entry then gets posted to the relevant ledger accounts. The ledger is a collection of all the individual accounts, such as the sales account, rent account or bank account. In the ledger you can see the running balance of each item. For example, if a business buys stationery for cash, you would debit the stationery expense account and credit the cash account.
Journal entry: Stationery expense Dr £25, Cash Cr £ edger. T-accounts help you visualise this: the left side of the stationery T-account shows £25, while the right side of the cash T-account shows £ ecause any mistake here will ripple through to the trial balance and financial statements.
7. The Trial Balance | 试算表
A trial balance lists all the ledger accounts and their balances at a particular date, totalling the debit balances and credit balances separately. If double-entry has been correctly applied, the two totals should be equal. A trial balance that balances does not guarantee there are no errors — for example, a transaction could have been omitted entirely or posted to the wrong account — but it is an essential check of the arithmetic accuracy of the bookkeeping.
|---|---|---|
| Cash
| Inventory
| Loan
| Capital
| Total
When you prepare a trial balance in class, you are actually testing whether your ledger work obeys the dual-aspect principle. It is one of the most satisfying moments in accounting because a balanced trial balance tells you the foundation of your accounts is correct.
8. Introduction to Financial Statements |
From the trial balance, accountants prepare the two key financial statements. The income statement (or profit and loss account) shows the revenue earned and expenses incurred over a period, revealing the profit or loss. The statement of financial position (often called the balance sheet) shows the assets, liabilities and equity at a specific point in time, giving a snapshot of the business's financial health. Together they answer two questions: How did the business perform? And what is its current financial position?
Even before you learn the complex adjustments of IGCSE, you can practise simple versions: list your pocket money as capital, your spending as expenses, and see whether you have a surplus at the end of the month. This personal accounting exercise builds intuition for what financial statements really mean.
9. Building Good Habits for IGCSE Success | 培养良好习惯迎接IGCSE
Success in IGCSE Accounting comes from consistent practice and tidy working habits. Always use a ruler when drawing T-accounts and keep your columns perfectly aligned. Write the date, narrative and amounts clearly in every journal entry. Work through as many exercises as you can, because accounting is a skill you learn by doing, not just by reading. If you make a mistake, take time to find the error rather than simply crossing it out and moving on—finding errors trains your analytical thinking.
Also, practise explaining the logic behind a debit or credit aloud. When you can explain why a transaction increases an asset and decreases cash, you are no longer memorising rules—you are understanding the accounting equation in action. This deeper understanding will set you apart right from your first IGCSE lesson.
10. Looking Ahead: The IGCSE Accounting Syllabus | 展望:IGCSE会计教学大纲
The Cambridge IGCSE Accounting syllabus (0452) builds on everything we have discussed and then adds layers of detail. You will learn to record more complex transactions such as credit sales, discounts allowed and received, returns and irrecoverable debts. You will study the correction of errors that a trial balance cannot detect, and you will prepare full financial statements with adjustments for accruals and prepayments. Ratio analysis will teach you how to interpret profitability, liquidity and efficiency to evaluate a business's performance.
Don't be intimidated by the list of new topics. Every IGCSE student starts the course with the same Building blocks you have met in this guide. If you can confidently state the accounting equation, explain the double-entry rules and prepare a simple trial balance, you are already ahead of the game. Keep exploring practical examples in everyday life—look at a shop receipt and think of the entries behind it—and you will find that accounting is less a new language and more a new way of seeing the world.
