1. The Elements of Music |
The elements of music are the basic ingredients that shape every sound you hear in a piece.
Pitch tells us how high or low a note sounds; it forms melodies and harmonies.
Duration is the length of a sound or silence – short notes, long notes and rests.
Dynamics describe how loud or soft the music is, from very quiet (pianissimo) to very loud (fortissimo).
Tempo is the speed of the beat. It can be slow like Largo or fast like Presto.
Timbre is the unique tone colour that lets you tell a clarinet apart from a cello even when playing the same pitch.
Texture refers to the layers of sound and how they are woven together.
Structure is the overall plan of a piece, such as intro-verse-chorus or ABA form.
A handy way to remember the main elements is 'Mad T-shirt': Melody, Articulation, Dynamics, Tempo, Texture, Structure, Harmony, Instruments, Rhythm.
2. Reading and Writing Notation |
Written music uses a five-line staff (or stave). Notes are placed on lines and spaces to show pitch.
A clef at the start of the staff fixes the pitch reference. The treble clef (𝄞) is used for higher notes, and the bass clef (𝄢) for lower notes.
The musical alphabet uses the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G. After G the pattern repeats.
音乐字母表使用字母 A, B, C, D, E, F, G。
Sharps (♯) raise a note by a semitone, flats (♭) lower it by a semitone, and a natural (♮) cancels a previous sharp or flat.
Notes show duration: a whole note (semibreve) lasts four beats, a half note (minim) two beats, a quarter note (crotchet) one beat, and an eighth note (quaver) half a beat.
Rests are symbols for silence, matching the duration of notes. A whole rest hangs from a line, a half rest sits on a line.
A dotted note (♩.) adds half of the original note's value. A tie joins two notes of the same pitch into one longer sound.
Bars (or measures) organise music into regular groups of beats, separated by bar lines.
3. Rhythm and Metre |
Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds and silences moving through time.
The beat is the steady pulse you tap your foot to. Metre is the grouping of beats into strong and weak patterns.
A time signature tells you how many beats are in each bar and what type of beat counts as one unit. The top number shows beats per bar, the bottom shows the beat unit.
Common time is 4/4, meaning four crotchet beats per bar. Simple time signatures like 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 have beats that divide naturally into two.
Compound time signatures like 6/8 have dotted beat units, and each beat divides into three.
Syncopation happens when the emphasis falls on a weak beat or between beats, creating an offbeat feel.
Triplets are three notes played in the space of two, often marked with a '3' bracket.
Tempo changes can be described with accelerando (getting faster) and ritardando (getting slower).
4. Pitch and Melody |
A melody is a sequence of pitches arranged to create a memorable tune. Melodies can move by step (conjunct) or by leap (disjunct).
The shape or contour of a melody describes whether its pitches rise, fall or stay level.
An interval is the distance between two pitches. Small intervals (seconds, thirds) give a smooth effect; large intervals (sixths, octaves) sound more dramatic.
A phrase is a musical sentence, often ending with a cadence. It feels like a natural breathing point.
Melodies can be decorated with ornaments like trills (rapid alternation between two notes) and grace notes (quick decorative notes).
Range describes how widely the notes of a melody are spread. A narrow range stays within a few notes, a wide range spans many.
In CCEA listening tasks, you may be asked to describe whether a melody is conjunct, disjunct, high, low, stepwise or has an ascending shape.
5. Scales and Tonality |
A scale is a rising or falling pattern of notes that forms the raw material for melody and harmony.
The C major scale is the simplest major scale: C D E F G A B C, with no sharps or flats. It follows the pattern tone–tone–semitone–tone–tone–tone–semitone.
A semitone is the smallest step on a keyboard – from any key to the next adjacent key. A tone equals two semitones.
Tonality refers to the key and overall sense of 'home' note. Major keys often sound bright and happy; minor keys tend to sound sad or serious.
The harmonic minor scale raises the seventh note, creating a distinctive leap between the sixth and seventh degrees.
A pentatonic scale has only five notes (e.g. C D E G A) and is common in folk and pop music. Blues scales add flattened notes for an expressive sound.
When listening, you can often hear whether a piece is in a major key or minor key just by its overall mood.
6. Chords and Harmony |
Harmony is created when two or more different pitches sound simultaneously. A chord is a group of three or more notes played together.
A triad is the simplest chord, built by stacking two thirds. For example, C major triad: C, E, G.
The primary triads in a major key are chords I, IV and V. In C major, these are C major, F major and G major.
Chord V often creates tension that wants to resolve to chord I, producing a perfect cadence (V–I).
An imperfect cadence ends on V and sounds unfinished, like a question. A plagal cadence (IV–I) is the 'Amen' ending.
Consonant harmonies sound pleasant and stable; dissonant harmonies create tension and feel restless.
In Year 8, you will begin to identify chord changes by ear and to compose simple chord sequences to accompany a melody.
7. Dynamics and Tempo |
Dynamics add shape and emotion. Italian terms are used worldwide: pp (pianissimo, very soft), p (piano, soft), mp (mezzo-piano, moderately soft), mf (mezzo-forte, moderately loud), f (forte, loud), ff (fortissimo, very loud).
全球通用意大利语术语:pp(极弱), p(弱), mp(中弱), mf(中强), f(强), ff(极强)。
Gradual changes are indicated by crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo or decrescendo (getting softer).
Sforzando (sfz) is a sudden strong accent on a single note or chord.
Tempo marks are equally important. Largo means slow and broad, Adagio slow and stately, Andante at a walking pace, Moderato at a moderate speed, Allegro fast and lively, Vivace very lively, Presto very fast.
Largo(广板)缓慢宽广,Adagio(柔板)缓慢庄严,Andante(行板)步行速度,Moderato(中板)中速,Allegro(快板)快速活泼,Vivace(活板)非常活泼,Presto(急板)非常快。
A metronome mark gives an exact speed in beats per minute (BPM), e.g. ♩ = 120.
Composers often combine dynamic and tempo changes to build climaxes or create a calm atmosphere.
8. Timbre and Instrument Families |
Timbre is the 'colour' of a sound. It allows you to distinguish between a flute and a trumpet even when they play the same note.
The main families of the orchestra are strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon), brass (trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba) and percussion (timpani, snare drum, cymbals, xylophone).
String instruments produce sound by bowing, plucking (pizzicato) or strumming. Woodwinds use a reed or an edge to set air vibrating.
Brass players buzz their lips into a mouthpiece. Percussion instruments are struck, shaken or scraped.
Keyboard instruments like the piano, organ and electronic keyboard belong to a separate family, producing sound through hammered strings, pipes or digital samples.
Guitars and ukuleles are chordophones, often plucked or strummed, while recorders are simple woodwinds ideal for classroom learning.
When describing timbre, use words like warm, bright, nasal, breathy, harsh, mellow or metallic.
9. Texture and Structure |
Monophonic texture has a single unaccompanied melodic line. Everyone sings or plays the same tune.
Homophonic texture features a main melody supported by chords. Most pop songs and hymns are homophonic.
Polyphonic texture has two or more independent melodies weaving together, like a round or fugue.
Structure shapes how sections of music are organised. Binary form (AB) has two contrasting sections and is often used in Baroque dances.
Ternary form (ABA) starts with a section, moves to a contrasting middle and returns to the opening. Minuet and trio follows this plan.
Rondo form has a recurring 'A' section alternating with contrasting episodes: ABACADA.
Verse-chorus form is the backbone of popular music. Verses tell the story with changing lyrics, while the chorus repeats with a catchy hook.
An introduction sets the mood and a coda (ending) rounds off the piece. Bridges provide contrasting material between the second and final chorus.
10. Musical Periods and Styles |
The Baroque period (1600-1750) features ornate melodies, terraced dynamics, a harpsichord continuo and composers like Bach and Handel.
The Classical period (1750-1820) favours clarity, balance and elegant melody. Haydn, Mozart and early Beethoven defined this style with symmetrical phrases and clear forms.
The Romantic period (1820-1900) expands orchestral forces, uses wide-ranging dynamics and expresses deep emotion. Composers include Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Brahms.
20th-century music saw many styles: Impressionism (Debussy), jazz, blues, rock and roll, minimalism (Philip Glass) and musical theatre.
World music traditions – such as African drumming, Indian raga and Gamelan – introduce different tuning systems and rhythmic structures.
In Year 8 you will start to place pieces in their historical context by listening for clues like instrumentation, use of dynamics and typical harmonic progressions.
Recognising broad styles helps you answer questions like 'Describe the style of this piece' and 'Name a possible composer and period'.
