1. The Elements of Art |
The seven building blocks of any artwork. Memorise them first, as everything else builds on these.
Line – A continuous mark made on a surface. Imagine a dot that goes for a walk. Lines can be thick, thin, wavy, straight, zigzag or broken.
Shape – A flat, enclosed area created when a line meets itself. Shapes are 2D and can be geometric (squares, circles) or organic (freeform blobs).
Form – A shape that has become 3D by adding depth. A square is a shape; a cube is a form. Think sculpture and real volume.
Colour – What we see when light reflects off a surface. It has hue (the name), value (lightness/darkness) and intensity (brightness).
Value – The lightness or darkness of a colour. A high value is light (near white); a low value is dark (near black). Value creates contrast and mood.
Texture – The way a surface feels or looks like it feels. Actual texture you can touch; implied texture is painted or drawn to look rough, smooth, furry, etc.
Space – The area around, between or within objects. Positive space is the subject; negative space is the background. Artists use overlapping, size and placement to show depth.
Memory phrase: 'Little Snakes Feel Cold Very Thin Skin' – Line, Shape, Form, Colour, Value, Texture, Space.
2. The Principles of Design |
These are the rules artists use to organise the elements. Knowing them helps you analyse any composition.
Balance – The distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance mirrors sides equally; asymmetrical balance uses different objects that feel equally heavy.
Contrast – Placing different elements side by side to highlight differences, such as rough vs. smooth, light vs. dark, or large vs. small.
Emphasis – Creating a focal point; the part of the artwork that catches the viewer's eye first. Often achieved through contrast, placement or size.
Movement – The way a composition guides a viewer's eye through the artwork. Lines, shapes and edges can create a visual path.
Pattern – The repeating of an element (dots, lines, shapes) to create a decorative surface. Pattern can be regular or irregular.
Rhythm – A visual beat created by repeating elements with variation, similar to music. Rhythm makes the artwork feel alive and cohesive.
Unity – The feeling that all parts of an artwork fit together as a whole. Repetition, colour harmony and proximity help achieve unity.
Mnemonics: 'Big Cats Eat Many Purple Rats Usually' – Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm, Unity.
3. Colour Theory Basics |

Tertiary colours – Mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary, e.g. red-orange, yellow-green.
Warm and cool colours – Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) remind us of sun and fire; cool colours (blue, green, violet) suggest ice and water. Remember: warm advances, cool recedes.
Complementary colours – Opposite on the colour wheel: red-green, blue-orange, yellow-purple. Placed side by side, they create maximum contrast and vibrancy.
Hue, tint, shade, tone – Hue is the colour's name; tint = hue + white; shade = hue + black; tone = hue + grey.
Colour schemes to know – Monochromatic (1 hue with tints and shades), analogous (neighbours on the wheel), complementary, triadic (3 evenly spaced colours).
| Colour Mix | Result | Memory image |
|---|---|---|
| Red + Yellow | Orange | A sunset or a juicy orange |
| Yellow + Blue | Green | Grass or leaves |
| Blue + Red | Violet | Lavender or a bruise |
Imagine the colour wheel as a clock: red at 12, yellow at 4, blue at 8. Complementary pairs are opposite 'time zones', making them easy to recall.
4. Drawing and Mark-Making Techniques |
These techniques add texture, value and energy to your drawings. Practise them and link the name to the action.
