1. The Formal Elements |
These are the building blocks of every artwork. When you look at a piece, ask yourself how the artist has used line, tone, colour, pattern, texture, shape and form. The SQA expects you to identify and describe these seven elements with confidence.
Line – A mark with length and direction, which can be straight, curved, thick, thin, broken or continuous. In Mandarin, 线条 (xiàntiáo). Think of the bold outlines in a comic book or the delicate, flowing lines in a Chinese ink painting.
Tone (Value) – The lightness or darkness of a colour or surface. In Mandarin, 色调/明暗 (sèdiào / míng'àn). A graphite pencil drawing uses tone to make a sphere look three-dimensional; the lightest area is the highlight and the darkest is the shadow.
Colour – Produced when light reflects off a surface. We describe it by hue (name of the colour), intensity (brightness or dullness) and temperature (warm or cool). In Mandarin, 色彩 (sècǎi). A vibrant red poppy has high intensity, while a muted grey-blue is low intensity.
Pattern – A repeated decorative design, either regular or irregular. In Mandarin, 图案 (tú'àn). The repeating swirls on wallpaper or the organised dots in Aboriginal art are both examples of pattern.
Texture – How a surface feels or looks like it would feel. Actual texture is real (rough bark), while simulated texture is drawn or painted illusion (smooth water that looks wavy). In Mandarin, 肌理 (jīlǐ). Run your finger over an oil painting; the thick brushstrokes create an impasto texture.
Shape – A two-dimensional, flat area defined by edges. Shapes can be geometric (square, circle) or organic (leaf, puddle). In Mandarin, 形状 (xíngzhuàng). A silhouette of a cat is an organic shape, while a road sign is usually a geometric shape.
Form – A three-dimensional object that has height, width and depth, like a sculpture. In a 2D work, form is created through strong use of tone and perspective. In Mandarin, 形体 (xíngtǐ). A ball is a form; a drawn circle with shading is a representation of that form.
2. Principles of Design |
If the elements are ingredients, the principles are the recipe – they describe how those ingredients are organised to create a successful composition. You should be able to explain how balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm and unity work together.
Balance – The distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance is a mirror image; asymmetrical balance uses different items that have equal visual pull. In Mandarin, 平衡 (pínghéng). A classic portrait with the face centred is symmetrical; a landscape with a large tree on one side and a small mountain on the other can still feel balanced.
Contrast – A large difference between elements, such as light and dark, rough and smooth, or large and small shapes. In Mandarin, 对比 (duìbǐ). Black ink on white rice paper creates extreme contrast; a tiny red berry in a field of green leaves also uses colour contrast.
Emphasis (Focal Point) – The part of an artwork that catches the viewer's eye first. Artists create emphasis through placement, colour, contrast or size. In Mandarin, 强调/焦点 (qiángdiào / jiāodiǎn). In a group portrait, the person wearing the brightest red jacket will naturally draw your attention.
Movement – The path the viewer's eye takes through the artwork, often directed by lines, edges, shapes and colours. In Mandarin, 动势/视觉引导 (dòngshì / shìjué yǐndǎo). A winding river or a row of diagonal brushstrokes can lead your eye from the foreground to the background.
Proportion – The size relationship of parts to each other and to the whole work. In figure drawing, we talk about head-to-body ratio. In Mandarin, 比例 (bǐlì). A cartoon character might have an exaggerated large head and small body – that is a deliberate use of unrealistic proportion for effect.
Rhythm – The repetition of elements to create a sense of organised movement, like music. Rhythm can be regular, flowing or progressive. In Mandarin, 节奏 (jiézòu). The repeating arches in a Roman aqueduct or the gradually increasing size of flowers in a pattern both create a strong visual rhythm.
Unity (Harmony) – A feeling that all parts of the artwork work together and belong. In Mandarin, 统一/和谐 (tǒngyī / héxié). Using a limited colour palette or repeating a similar brushstroke throughout a painting helps to achieve unity.
