1. Why Study Economics? |
Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses and governments allocate scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants. It sharpens your decision-making skills and equips you to understand real-world issues like inflation, unemployment and international trade. By learning economics, you start to see the hidden logic behind everyday choices, from pocket money spending to why a cup of coffee costs what it does.
Economics also encourages you to think critically about policies and news. When you hear about tax changes or a rise in the minimum wage, you will be able to ask the right questions and form your own reasoned opinions.
2. Scarcity and the Basic Economic Problem |
At the heart of every economic decision lies scarcity: our resources - like time, money, land and labour - are limited, yet our desires are virtually infinite. This tension forces individuals and societies to make choices. The basic economic problem asks three fundamental questions: What goods and services should be produced? How should they be produced? And for whom should they be produced?
For example, a government with a fixed budget must choose between building a new hospital or improving roads. Similarly, as a student, you face scarcity of time every evening: study economics, play sport or scroll through social media. Understanding scarcity helps you see that every choice involves a trade-off.
3. Opportunity Cost |
Whenever a choice is made, the next best alternative given up is called the opportunity cost. It is not simply the money spent, but the value of the foregone benefit. If you spend an evening revising economics, the opportunity cost might be the enjoyment and relaxation lost from not watching a movie. If a farmer uses a field to grow wheat, the opportunity cost is the barley that could have been grown instead.
Opportunity cost is a crucial concept because it makes you think beyond the immediate expenditure. It helps governments decide between spending on health or education and guides businesses when they invest in new machinery rather than hiring more workers. By always asking 'what am I giving up?', you make more informed and rational decisions.
4. Demand: The Law of Demand |
Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given period. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus (all else being equal), as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls, and as the price falls, quantity demanded rises. This inverse relationship is illustrated by a downward-sloping demand curve.
Besides the product's own price, several factors shift the entire demand curve. An increase in consumer income usually boosts demand for normal goods. A rise in the price of a substitute (like tea for coffee) can increase the demand for coffee. Changes in tastes, advertising and population size also play a role.
| Factor (English) |
|---|---|
| Price of the good itself |
| Price of substitutes |
| Price of complements |
| Tastes and preferences |
5. Supply: The Law of Supply |
Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices during a specific period. According to the law of supply, as the price of a good increases, the quantity supplied rises, and as the price decreases, the quantity supplied falls, ceteris paribus. This positive relationship is shown by an upward-sloping supply curve.
Shifts in the supply curve are caused by changes in production costs, technology, taxes, subsidies and the number of sellers. For instance, a bad harvest reduces the supply of wheat, shifting the supply curve to the left. An improvement in technology reduces production costs and shifts supply to the right.
| Supply Shifter (English) |
|---|---|
| Costs of production (wages, raw materials) |
| Technology and productivity |
| Taxes and subsidies |
| Number of firms in the market |
6. Market Equilibrium and the Price Mechanism |
Markets coordinate the decisions of buyers and sellers. Equilibrium occurs at the price where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied, denoted (P*, Q*). At this point, there is no shortage or surplus, and the market clears. If the price is set above equilibrium, a surplus arises, forcing producers to lower prices. If the price is below equilibrium, a shortage develops, causing prices to be bid upward.
This self-correcting process is known as the price mechanism. The functions of prices include signalling (conveying information about scarcity), rationing (allocating goods to those willing to pay) and incentivising (motivating producers to adjust supply). Without any central planner, markets coordinate the allocation of resources through price changes.
7. Elasticity: A Simple Introduction |
Elasticity measures how responsive quantity demanded or supplied is to a change in one of its determinants. The most common measure is price elasticity of demand (PED), which calculates the percentage change in quantity demanded relative to the percentage change in price. It helps businesses and governments understand consumer sensitivity.
PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP
If PED is greater than 1, demand is price elastic – a small price increase causes a larger drop in quantity demanded. If PED is less than 1, demand is price inelastic – quantity demanded changes little when price changes. Goods with many substitutes tend to have elastic demand, while necessities like basic food or medicines are often inelastic. Firms use elasticity to predict revenue changes; governments use it when setting taxes on goods like tobacco.
8. Production, Costs and Profit |
To produce goods, firms combine the four factors of production: land (natural resources), labour (human effort), capital (machinery and tools) and enterprise (the risk-taking ability of the entrepreneur). They face two main types of costs: fixed costs, which do not vary with output (e.g., rent, insurance), and variable costs, which change with production levels (e.g., raw materials, hourly wages). Total cost is the sum of fixed and variable costs.
Total revenue is calculated as price multiplied by quantity sold. Profit is total revenue minus total cost. Most private firms aim to maximise profits; they do this by increasing efficiency, controlling costs or raising prices. Even not-for-profit organisations need to cover costs to survive.
9. The Role of Government in the Economy |
Governments intervene in markets to correct market failures, provide public goods and ensure a fairer distribution of income. Market failure occurs when the free market fails to allocate resources efficiently – for instance, through pollution or the under-provision of healthcare. The government can use fiscal policy (changing taxes and government spending) to influence economic activity. Expansionary fiscal policy, such as cutting taxes or increasing spending, can boost demand during a recession.
Monetary policy, often managed by a central bank, involves adjusting interest rates and the money supply to control inflation and stabilise the economy. Lower interest rates encourage borrowing and spending; higher rates help cool down an overheating economy. Governments also impose regulations, such as minimum wage laws or limits on pollution, to protect workers and the environment.
10. Personal Finance and Your Summer Learning Plan |
Economics directly applies to your own finances. Begin by creating a simple summer budget: list your expected income (pocket money, gifts) and planned spending (snacks, outings, savings). Distinguish between needs and wants, and set a savings goal, perhaps for a larger item you hope to buy later. Tracking your spending for a week gives you a clear picture of where your money goes and helps you develop good financial habits early.
To make the most of this summer, build a weekly review schedule. Spend 30 minutes three times a week re-reading these sections, discussing a real-world economic news story with a family member, and attempting a few quick quiz questions. Focus on understanding the main ideas and using economic vocabulary aloud. This active recall and bilingual practice will cement your knowledge and help you walk into Year 8 economics with genuine curiosity and confidence.
