1. Welcome to Chemistry |

Chemistry is the branch of science that asks 'What are things made of?' and 'How can substances change?'. In Year 8, you will move from simply describing materials to explaining their behaviour using the particle model and simple atomic ideas. This bridging course will introduce the big ideas you need, such as atoms, elements, chemical reactions, acids and useful materials, in a logical order so you can see how everything fits together.

You do not need any prior knowledge other than curiosity. Keep a notebook handy to jot down questions and draw diagrams. Let's begin your chemistry journey.

2. States of Matter |

Everything around you exists as a solid, a liquid or a gas. The particle model explains the differences: all substances are made of tiny particles that are constantly moving. In solids, the particles are tightly packed in a regular pattern and only vibrate – this gives solids a fixed shape and volume. In liquids, the particles are close together but can slide past each other, so a liquid takes the shape of its container but has a fixed volume. In gases, the particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions, so a gas spreads out to fill any container and has no fixed shape or volume.

SolidRegular, close-packedVibrate in fixed positionsFixed shape, fixed volume
LiquidRandom, closeSlide past each otherTakes shape of container, fixed volume
GasRandom, far apartMove rapidly in all directionsNo fixed shape, no fixed volume

Changes of state happen when energy is added or removed. Melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), boiling (liquid to gas) and condensation (gas to liquid) are all physical changes – the substance stays the same chemically, only its particle arrangement alters.

3. Atoms and Elements |

An atom is the smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element. An element is a substance made from only one type of atom. There are about 118 known elements, and each has a unique chemical symbol – sometimes from its English name (e.g., C for carbon, O for oxygen) and sometimes from its Latin name (e.g., Na for sodium, from 'natrium'). In Year 8, you will learn to recognise the symbols of the first 20 elements, as well as common ones like iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and gold (Au).

Elements are the building blocks of all matter. Think of them as the letters in an alphabet – atoms of different elements can be joined together to make millions of substances, just as letters make words.

4. The Periodic Table | 周期表

The periodic table is a powerful tool that organises all known elements in order of increasing atomic number (the number of protons in an atom). Elements are arranged in rows called periods and columns called groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell and therefore show similar chemical behaviour. For example, Group 1 elements (lithium, sodium, potassium) are all very reactive metals, while Group 0 elements (helium, neon, argon) are unreactive noble gases.

A simplified periodic table helps you locate metals (mostly on the left and in the middle) and non-metals (on the right). There is a zigzag line that separates them; elements near this line, like silicon, are often semi-metals or metalloids. Knowing your way around the table helps predict whether an element is shiny, conducts electricity, or reacts with acid.

5. Compounds and Mixtures |

When two or more elements react together chemically, they form a compound. The atoms are strongly bonded, and the compound has completely different properties from the elements it contains. Sodium is a reactive metal, chlorine is a toxic green gas, but together they make sodium chloride – common table salt. Chemical formulas show the types and ratios of atoms: water is H₂O (two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom), carbon dioxide is CO₂.

A mixture contains two or more substances that are not chemically joined. Mixtures can be separated using physical methods because each substance keeps its own properties. For example, sand and water can be separated by filtration; salt from salt water by evaporation; and different coloured inks by chromatography. Air is a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen.

6. Chemical Reactions |

A chemical reaction happens when starting substances (reactants) are transformed into new substances (products) with different properties. Unlike a physical change (like melting ice), a chemical reaction makes new chemical bonds and is usually difficult to reverse. You can spot a reaction by watching for signs: a colour change, a temperature change (exothermic gives out heat, endothermic takes in heat), bubbles of gas being produced, or a solid (precipitate) appearing when two solutions are mixed.

describe reactions. For example: magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide. The arrow (→) means 'reacts to form' ance equations, but for now, being able to name reactants and products is your first step.

7. Acids and Alkalis |

Acids and alkalis are two groups of chemicals you meet every day. Acids have a sour taste (citric acid in lemons, acetic acid in vinegar) and can be corrosive. Alkalis feel soapy and are often found in cleaning products (sodium hydroxide in oven cleaners). In the lab, we never taste chemicals; instead we use indicators to test acidity. Litmus paper turns red in acid and blue in alkali.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14 and gives a more precise measure. Substances with pH less than 7 are acidic, pH 7 is neutral (like pure water), and pH greater than 7 are alkaline. Universal indicator solution shows a rainbow of colours from red (strong acid) through green (neutral) to purple (strong alkali). Being able to estimate pH from the colour change is a core practical skill.
