1. Introduction to SQA Chemistry Curriculum | SQA
The S2 Chemistry course in Scotland is organised around three big ideas: Matter, Chemical Changes, and Earth's Materials. You will explore how atoms join to form everything around us, how reactions can be controlled and explained, and where useful substances come from. Each unit links classroom theory to practical experiments and everyday life.
Assessment includes end-of-topic tests, practical write-ups, and sometimes a research project. The skills you develop – observing, predicting, analysing – are as important as the facts you learn.
2. States of Matter |
Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid and gas. The particle model explains these states by describing how particles are arranged and how they move. In solids, particles are tightly packed in a regular pattern and only vibrate in fixed positions, giving solids a definite shape and volume.
In liquids, particles are close together but can slide past each other, so a liquid has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container. In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions, so a gas has no fixed shape or volume and can be compressed.
Changes of state – melting, freezing, boiling, condensing and sublimation – require energy to be added or removed. Heating a solid provides the energy to overcome attractive forces and melt it into a liquid. These are physical changes because no new substance is formed.
3. Atoms, Elements and the Periodic Table |
Everything is made from tiny particles called atoms. An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. Each element is represented by a chemical symbol, e.g. hydrogen (H), carbon (C), sodium (Na). The periodic table lists all known elements in order of increasing atomic number.
Elements are arranged in vertical groups and horizontal periods. Group number often tells us the number of electrons in the outer shell, which determines chemical reactivity. For example, Group 1 metals (like sodium) are highly reactive, while Group 8 noble gases (like helium) are unreactive.
Metals are found on the left and centre, non-metals on the right. The bold line on many tables separates them; elements near this line, such as silicon, are metalloids with mixed properties. You should memorise the first 20 elements and their symbols.
4. Compounds and Mixtures |
A compound is a pure substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together. The elements in a compound are always present in a fixed ratio by mass, and the compound has properties completely different from its individual elements. For example, water (H₂O) is a liquid, but hydrogen and oxygen are gases.
Common compounds you will meet in S2 include carbon dioxide (CO₂), sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄). You will learn to write chemical formulae by balancing the charges or valencies of the combining ions or atoms.
A mixture, on the other hand, contains two or more substances that are not chemically joined. Each substance keeps its own properties, and the composition can vary. Air is a mixture of gases; seawater is a mixture of water, salt and other dissolved substances. Mixtures can be separated by physical techniques.
5. Chemical Reactions and Equations |
A chemical reaction happens when atoms are rearranged to make new substances. Observable signs include a colour change, a gas being given off (fizzing), a temperature change (getting hot or cold), or a solid precipitate forming from two solutions.
We can describe reactions using word equations: for example, 'magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide' ront (coefficients) balance the equation so that the law of conservation of mass is obeyed – atoms are neither created nor destroyed.
Reactions can be classified as exothermic (release energy, like combustion) or endothermic (absorb energy, like photosynthesis). Recognising these energy changes is an important practical skill.
6. Acids and Alkalis |
Acids are substances with a pH less than 7 when dissolved in water. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). They taste sour (though you must never taste in a lab), turn blue litmus red, and react with certain metals to produce hydrogen gas (H₂).
and potassium hydroxide (KOH) are strong alkalis. A neutralisation reaction occurs when an acid and an alkali react, producing a salt and water: e.g. HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O.
The pH scale runs from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), with 7 being neutral. Indicators like universal indicator show a range of colours depending on pH; this is used to measure how acidic or alkaline a solution is.
7. Metals and Non-Metals |
Metals share characteristic properties: they are shiny (lustrous), good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable (can be bent or hammered into shapes) and ductile (can be drawn into wires). Most have high melting and boiling points.
Non-metals tend to be dull, poor conductors (insulators), and brittle when solid. They have lower melting points than metals and often form acidic oxides, whereas metal oxides are usually basic.
), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), silver (Ag), gold (Au). A more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its compound in a displacement reaction, e.g. Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu.
8. Separation Techniques |
Different separation methods take advantage of specific physical properties. Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid; the solid collects on the filter paper while the liquid (filtrate) passes through. For example, separating sand from water.
Evaporation and crystallisation are used to obtain a soluble solid from a solution. The water is removed by gentle heating, leaving the solid behind. Distillation separates a liquid from a solution or a mixture of liquids based on differences in boiling points.
Chromatography separates coloured substances, such as the inks in a pen, based on how they travel through a medium. The pattern created is called a chromatogram and can be used to identify pure substances or mixtures.
In S2 practical work, you will often be asked to choose the best separation technique for a given mixture and explain your reasoning.
9. Key Skills: Scientific Inquiry |
SQA Chemistry places strong emphasis on inquiry and practical skills. You must be able to write a clear aim and hypothesis, identify independent, dependent and control variables, and design a fair test. For instance, when investigating what affects the rate of dissolving, the temperature might be your independent variable, while the time taken to dissolve is the dependent variable.
During experiments, you will record accurate observations and measurements, often in a table, and then present results in graphs. You must also evaluate the reliability of your data, comment on any anomalies, and suggest improvements to your method.
Using proper scientific vocabulary – such as 'collision frequency', 'concentration', 'solute', 'solvent' – will help you communicate your findings clearly and achieve higher marks.
10. Summer Revision Tips |
Start by reviewing your S1 notes on particles, elements, and simple reactions. Make a glossary of key words: atom, molecule, compound, mixture, pH, neutralisation, etc. Use flashcards for the first 20 element symbols and their names; this saves a lot of time once S2 begins.
Try simple home experiments: adding baking soda to vinegar shows a gas-producing reaction; placing an iron nail in salty water for a few days demonstrates rusting, which involves oxidation. Always have an adult with you and discuss safety.
Read the first chapter of your S2 textbook or a trusted online resource about the periodic table and atomic structure. Aim to understand what an atom is, the meaning of atomic number, and how electrons are arranged in shells.
Finally, stay curious. Watch educational videos about chemical reactions, visit a science museum if you can, and write down questions you want to answer in class. A little preparation transforms summer into a powerful academic springboard.
