1. Calculating Target Heart Rate Zones (Maths in PE) |
A key skill in training is knowing how hard your heart is working. The quickest way to estimate your maximum heart rate (MHR) is to use the formula:
MHR = 220 − age
Cross-curricular question (Maths + PE): A 12-year-old Year 8 student wants to train at a vigorous intensity of 70–85% of MHR for a circuit session. Calculate her target heart rate range in beats per minute (bpm). Show all your working.
08 × 0.70 = 145.6 ≈ 146 bpm. Upper limit = 208 × 0.85 = 176.8 ≈ 177 bpm. Target zone = 146–177 bpm.
2. Levers in the Human Body (Physics & PE) |
Your bones and muscles work together as levers to create movement. A lever system always has a fulcrum (pivot), a load (resistance) and an effort (force from the muscle). We classify levers into first, second and third class based on which component sits in the middle.
Cross-curricular question (Physics + PE): During a bicep curl, the elbow acts as the fulcrum, the weight in the hand is the load, and the bicep muscle provides the effort, pulling on the forearm just below the elbow. Identify which class of lever this represents and explain why.
Answer: This is a third-class lever because the effort (bicep) is positioned between the fulcrum (elbow) and the load (weight in hand). In the body, most levers are third class, which favour speed and range of movement over strength.
3. Energy Balance and Nutrition (Science & PE) |
To maintain a healthy weight and perform well in sport, the energy you take in from food and drink must match the energy you use during daily activities and exercise. This is known as energy balance. The unit we use is the kilocalorie (kcal).
Cross-curricular question (Science + PE): A Year 8 pupil's total daily energy requirement is 2200 kcal. By lunchtime she has already eaten 950 kcal. For lunch she eats a pasta salad (480 kcal), a banana (90 kcal) and drinks a flavoured milk (210 kcal). How many kcal remain for her evening meal and snacks if she wants to meet - but not exceed - her requirement?
ance = 2200 − 1730 = 470 kcal. She can plan an evening meal and snacks totalling 470 kcal.
4. Orienteering and Map Skills (Geography & PE) |
Orienteering combines physical fitness with navigation skills. You must be able to read a six-figure grid reference and use the map scale to calculate real distances. This makes you a faster and more effective navigator.
Cross-curricular question (Geography + PE): On an orienteering map with a scale of 1:25 000, you measure a straight-line distance of 4.2 cm between control point A (grid reference 253 678) and control point B. What is the real distance on the ground in metres? Explain your steps.
Real distance = 4.2 × 250 m = 1050 m. The distance between the two points is 1050 metres.
5. Joint Actions and Muscle Movements (Biology & PE) |
Understanding how muscles work in pairs to produce movement at a joint is a core part of both PE and science. In any movement, the muscle that contracts to create the action is the agonist, while the opposing muscle that relaxes is the antagonist.
Cross-curricular question (Biology + PE): During the upward phase of a squat (standing up from a bent-knee position), the knee extends. Identify the agonist and antagonist muscles at the knee and name the type of movement.
Answer: The agonist is the quadriceps group (muscles at the front of the thigh), which contract to straighten the knee. The antagonist is the hamstring group (at the back of the thigh), which relaxes. The movement is extension.
6. Analysing Fitness Test Data (Maths & PE) |
Coaches collect test results to monitor progress. Being able to calculate the mean, median and range helps you summarise data and spot patterns, just like in a maths lesson.
Cross-curricular question (Maths + PE): Five Year 8 students completed a multi-stage fitness test and achieved the following levels: 7.2, 8.1, 6.8, 7.9, 8.5. Calculate the mean, median and range of these scores.
= 38.5 ÷ 5 = 7.7. Median (middle value) = 7.9. Range = highest − lowest = 8.5 − 6.8 = 1.7.
7. The Ancient Olympic Games (History & PE) |
Sport has a rich history. The ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece, were very different from the modern Games we watch today. Linking history with PE helps you appreciate how sporting values have evolved.
Cross-curricular question (History + PE): Describe two major differences between the ancient Olympic Games and the modern Olympic Games.
Answer: 1) In the ancient Games, only free-born Greek men could compete, and athletes competed naked. Today, the Olympics are open to men and women from all nations and athletes wear appropriate sportswear. 2) The ancient Games were always held in Olympia as a religious festival dedicated to Zeus, while the modern Games move to a different host city every four years and are a secular, global celebration of sport.
Being a good teammate is as important as physical skill. In PE, you often reflect on how you communicate, encourage others and show leadership. These are key skills from PSHE and can be assessed in written tasks.
Cross-curricular question (PSHE + PE): During a basketball match, your teammate misses an easy shot and looks very disappointed, which affects their performance. Explain how you would use positive communication to help them refocus. Why is this approach important for the team?
Answer: I would give them a thumbs-up, say 'Don't worry, next one is yours' or 'Keep moving, we trust you'. I would avoid shouting or blaming. This helps rebuild their confidence and keeps team morale high. When a player feels supported, they are more likely to take positive risks and perform better, which benefits the whole team's performance and unity.
9. Environmental Factors and Performance (Geography & PE) |
Where you exercise can change how your body responds. High altitude, heat and humidity all place extra demands on the body. Understanding these effects draws on knowledge from geography and science.
Cross-curricular question (Geography + PE): Many elite endurance runners choose to train at high altitude for several weeks before a major race at sea level. Explain what happens inside the body at altitude and why this can improve performance at sea level.
Answer: At high altitude there is less oxygen in the air. To compensate, the body produces more red blood cells, which carry oxygen. When the athlete returns to sea level, the extra red blood cells improve their oxygen-carrying capacity, allowing muscles to work harder for longer before tiring. This is a legal form of performance enhancement.
10. Technology in Sport: Heart Rate Monitors (ICT & PE) |
Wearable technology, such as heart rate monitors, allows you to collect real-time data about your body during exercise. Interpreting this data helps you train smarter, and it is a great example of using ICT skills in PE.
Cross-curricular question (ICT + PE): A student wore a heart rate monitor during a 45-minute PE lesson. The average heart rate was recorded every 5 minutes: 112, 126, 139, 155, 162, 148, 134, 121, 110 bpm. The student's target zone for improving cardiovascular fitness is 140–170 bpm. For how many minutes was the student inside the target zone? What percentage of the total lesson time does this represent?
Answer: The readings inside the zone (140– = 3 × 5 = 15 minutes. Total lesson time = 45 minutes. Percentage = (15 ÷ 45) × 100 = 33.3%. The student spent one third of the lesson at the right intensity for improving fitness.
