From measuring crime rates to understanding socialisation, these tools will help you analyse patterns, test ideas and build strong arguments in class and exams.
1. Understanding Socialisation |
Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values, customs and social skills appropriate to their society. It transforms a biological being into a social being capable of interacting with others.
Primary socialisation occurs in early childhood, mainly within the family, and lays down the basic rules of behaviour, language and emotional attachment.
Secondary socialisation takes place later, through agencies such as schools, peer groups, the mass media and religion, and teaches us how to act in wider society.
2. Culture, Norms and Values |
Culture refers to the whole way of life of a particular society, including its language, beliefs, art, music, food and traditions. Every society has its own distinctive culture that binds its members together.
Norms are the unwritten rules of behaviour that define what is considered normal or acceptable in everyday situations. For example, queuing in a shop is a norm in many societies.
Values are deeply held beliefs about what is right, wrong, desirable or undesirable. Values shape norms; for instance, valuing privacy leads to the norm of knocking on a door before entering.
3. Key Agencies of Socialisation |
The family is the primary agency and often the most influential, providing nurturing, basic discipline and a sense of identity. The way parents raise children varies according to social class, ethnicity and religion.
Schools act as a bridge between the family and the wider world, teaching formal knowledge and the 'hidden curriculum' – the informal lessons about punctuality, obedience and competition.
Peer groups become increasingly important during adolescence, offering young people a chance to develop an identity independent of adults and to practise social skills with equals.
The mass media exposes individuals to a wide range of ideas, role models and cultural norms from beyond their immediate environment, often shaping opinions and aspirations.
4. Research Methods in Sociology |
Sociologists use a systematic approach called the research process, which begins with a research question and a hypothesis – a testable statement predicting a relationship between two factors.
Questionnaires are sets of written questions distributed to a sample of people. They can collect data quickly from many respondents but may suffer from low response rates or misunderstood questions.
Interviews can be structured (with fixed questions) or unstructured (more like a conversation). They allow deeper insight but are more time-consuming and may be influenced by the interviewer's presence.
Observation involves watching people in their natural setting. Participant observation means the researcher joins the group; non-participant observation means watching from the outside. Both raise ethical issues about consent and privacy.
5. Simple Statistical Formulae for Sociology |
Sociologists often work with quantitative data – information in numerical form. A few basic calculations allow us to summarise and compare findings clearly.
A percentage shows a proportion out of 100 and is essential for comparing groups of different sizes.
Percentage (%) = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100
The mean, or average, is calculated by adding all values together and dividing by the number of values. It gives a central tendency but can be distorted by extreme scores.
Mean = (Sum of all values) ÷ (Number of values)
The median is the middle value when data are arranged in order. It is less affected by outliers. The mode is the value that appears most often.
Median: Sort data → Find middle position. Mode: Observe highest frequency.
Percentage change shows how much a figure has increased or decreased over time, useful for tracking trends such as crime rates.
Percentage change = ((New value - Old value) ÷ Old value) × 100
6. Crime and Deviance: Key Theories |
Deviance is behaviour that violates social norms, while crime is behaviour that breaks formal written laws. Not all deviance is criminal, but the two concepts overlap considerably.
Strain Theory (Merton) explains crime as a result of a gap between society's approved goals (e.g. financial success) and the legitimate means to achieve them. When legitimate paths are blocked, individuals may turn to illegitimate means, creating a 'strain' towards crime.
Labelling Theory suggests that deviance is created by the labels society attaches to certain actions or people. Once a person is labelled as a troublemaker, they may internalise that label and act accordingly, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Social control theory asks why most people do not commit crime. The answer lies in strong bonds to society – attachment, commitment, involvement and belief – which act as an inner 'theorem' of conformity.
7. Social Stratification: Measuring Inequality |
Social stratification refers to the way society is organised into layers or strata based on factors such as wealth, income, occupation, education and social status. Life chances – the opportunities each person has to achieve desired outcomes – are heavily shaped by this hierarchy.
Sociologists often measure inequality using income (the flow of money received, e.g. wages) and wealth (the stock of assets owned, e.g. property and savings). Wealth is usually distributed more unequally than income.
A simple way to express inequality is to compare the percentage of total income or wealth owned by the richest 10% of the population with that owned by the poorest 10%. This ratio reveals the 'gap' and can be tracked as a formula.
Inequality ratio = (Share of top 10%) ÷ (Share of bottom 10%)
8. Family Structures and Diversity |
A nuclear family consists of two parents and their children living together. It remains a widely recognised model, but modern societies show a great diversity of family forms.
An extended family includes relatives beyond the nuclear unit, such as grandparents, aunts or uncles, often sharing a household or living in close contact. This structure can provide additional support and socialisation.
Lone-parent families, formed by separation, divorce or personal choice, are one of the fastest-growing household types. Reconstituted families (or stepfamilies) bring together children from previous relationships into a new family unit.
Functionalist theory sees the family as an essential institution that performs key functions: stable satisfaction of the sex drive, reproduction, socialisation of the young and economic provision.
9. Power and Authority: Basic Concepts |
Power is the ability to make others do what you want, even if they would rather not. It can be exercised through force, influence or the control of resources. Authority is a specific form of power that is regarded as legitimate by those who obey.
Max Weber described three ideal types of authority. Traditional authority rests on long-established customs (e.g. a monarchy). Charismatic authority is based on the personal qualities of a leader who inspires devotion. Legal-rational authority derives from formal rules and positions, such as that of a headteacher or a police officer.
In British society today, legal-rational authority dominates public institutions, but elements of tradition and charisma can still be seen in family life and social movements.
10. Social Change and Population |
Societies are constantly changing, and demography – the study of population – provides essential 'formulae' for understanding this change. The birth rate is the number of live births per 1000 people per year.
Birth rate = (Number of live births ÷ Total population) × 1000
The death rate is calculated in the same way but using the number of deaths. The natural increase (or decrease) of a population is the difference between the birth rate and the death rate, ignoring migration.
Natural increase = Birth rate − Death rate
Migration also alters population size. Net migration is the balanced result of immigration (people moving in) and emigration (people moving out).
Net migration = Number of immigrants − Number of emigrants
11. Education and Achievement |
School is a major secondary socialisation agency and a site where inequality is both reproduced and challenged. Sociologists study why some groups achieve more highly than others.
Material deprivation refers to a lack of money and the physical resources needed for learning, such as a quiet workspace, books and access to technology. It can explain the link between poverty and lower educational achievement.
Cultural capital is the knowledge, attitudes, skills and tastes valued by the education system. Children from middle-class backgrounds often possess more cultural capital, giving them an advantage in navigating school life and assessments.
The hidden curriculum teaches unofficial lessons about hierarchy, obeying bells and deadlines, and accepting the authority of teachers. It arguably prepares pupils for the world of work and the acceptance of social control.
