📚 A-level Practical Report Writing Guide | A-level
An A-level practical report is a formal written account of an experiment you have carried out yourself. It records what you set out to find, how you designed and performed the procedure, what you observed, and how you interpreted your data. It is not simply a diary of actions: it is an argument in which evidence and reasoning are used to support a scientific claim. Writing it well shows that you can connect theory learned in class with real measurements taken at the bench.
1. What an A-level Practical Report Is | 什么是 A-level 实验报告
A-level practical reports are a key task in science study. They allow students to put theoretical knowledge into practice and they are an important way of assessing practical technique and scientific thinking. A typical report contains the aim, the design, the results, and the interpretation and analysis of those results.
Unlike a textbook exercise, a practical report cannot be copied from a mark scheme. Every claim must be traceable to a measurement, an observation or a cited source. This is what makes the report a genuine test of understanding rather than of memory.
A well-written report is also reusable. If a classmate reads your procedure and data, they should be able to repeat the experiment and check whether they get a similar outcome. That requirement of reproducibility shapes every section that follows.
2. Where Practical Reports Sit in A-level Assessment | 实验报告在 A-level 考核中的位置
Practical work is assessed in different ways by different boards. Cambridge International (CAIE) examines practical skills through dedicated written practical papers, typically a skill paper at AS and a planning, analysis and evaluation paper at A2. Edexcel International A Level uses practical examination units, while UK boards such as AQA and OCR require a set of required practicals or practical activity groups to be completed alongside the written exams.
In the UK, the practical endorsement is usually reported separately from the A-level grade, but a school cannot certify it unless the student has completed the required activities and demonstrated the required competences. In CAIE and Edexcel, practical questions carry real marks that directly affect the final grade.
Across all boards the same four skill areas appear again and again: planning, implementing, analysing, and evaluating. A good report is therefore written with these four verbs in mind, and every section should make at least one of them visible to the examiner.
3. The Aim: Stating Purpose and Variables |
A-level experiments aim to deepen your understanding of subject theory and its practical application. The core goal of a specific experiment is to explore a particular phenomenon or to verify certain theoretical principles. For example, a physics experiment may focus on how current changes in a circuit; a chemistry experiment may determine the chemical composition of a substance; a biology experiment may involve observing a biological response or analysing a biological sample.
The aim should be written as a single testable sentence, not a vague topic. 'To investigate electrolysis' is weak. 'To determine how the mass deposited at the cathode changes with the current passed through copper sulfate solution' is strong, because it names both the independent variable and the dependent variable.
Control variables matter just as much as the two you are changing and measuring. List them explicitly, with the value or condition you are holding constant, and explain briefly why each one must be controlled. This single habit removes a large number of avoidable mark deductions.
4. Experimental Design, Materials and Safety |
The design is tailored to the aim and to the level of the student. It must list in detail the materials and apparatus required, together with every step of the procedure. A good design also states the range and interval of the independent variable, the number of repeats, and the precision of the instruments chosen.
Safety and reproducibility must both be built into the plan. In physics and chemistry, students must operate laboratory equipment correctly and follow the procedure strictly; in biology, they must master correct sampling and handling techniques. Risk assessment is not decoration: identify the hazard, the risk, and the specific control measure for each one.
Finally, justify your choices rather than only describing them. Explain why a burette is used instead of a measuring cylinder, why a water bath replaces a direct flame, or why a colorimeter is preferred to the naked eye. Justification is the clearest evidence of planning skill that an examiner can see.
5. Procedure and Faithful Recording |
The procedure section should record every step actually carried out, together with the phenomena observed. This record exists so that another person can reproduce the experiment and check the results. Students should stay alert to changes and phenomena during the work, and record environmental conditions such as time and temperature accurately.
Write in the past tense and in the passive voice where it reads naturally, and keep the language precise: 'the solution turned from colourless to pale pink after 12.4 cm³ of titrant had been added', not 'it changed colour'. Qualitative observations are data too, and they are often what allows an anomaly to be explained later.
Record data immediately, in ink, in a ruled table, and never copy them up later from memory. If something goes wrong, note it in the report rather than hiding it. An honest note about a spillage or a drifting reading is far more useful to the reader than a sanitised account that cannot be trusted.
6. Results and Data Presentation |
Results are the final output of the whole process and are usually presented as tables, graphs or written statements. They should present observations and measurements clearly and precisely. Students then need to analyse and interpret the results in the light of relevant theory and the aim, and put forward their own views and inferences.
Raw data and processed data belong in separate tables. The raw table holds the readings exactly as taken; the processed table holds the means, the derived quantities, and their uncertainties. Mixing the two makes it impossible for a reader to check your arithmetic.
Every column heading must include both the quantity and its unit, written as a quotient: time t ÷ s, or current I ÷ A. This convention removes the need to repeat units in every cell and it makes anomalous values immediately visible.
7. Tables, Graphs, Precision and Uncertainty |
Precision is a mark-bearing feature of practical work. Record every reading to the smallest division of the instrument plus one estimated digit, and keep the same number of decimal places down each column. When you average repeated readings, the mean should be quoted to the same precision as the raw values, not to more.
Tables and graphs must be drawn with a ruler, labelled with quantity and unit, and given a descriptive caption such as 'Table 2: mass of copper deposited against charge passed'. On a graph, plot the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis, choose a scale that uses most of the paper, and draw a single best-fit line rather than joining dot to dot.
nstrument; for repeated readings it may be taken as half the range. Percentage uncertainty is then found from the measured value.
percentage uncertainty = (absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value) × 100%
mean = Σx ÷ n
| Burette (0.1 cm³ scale) | 滴定管(0.1 cm³ 刻度) | ± 0.05 cm³ (two readings ± 0.10 cm³) |
8. Errors, Anomalies and Limitations |
Errors fall into two families. Random errors scatter readings unpredictably above and below the true value and can be reduced by taking repeats and averaging. Systematic errors push every reading in the same direction, for example a zero error on an ammeter or a thermometer reading consistently 0.5 °C too high, and they cannot be removed by averaging.
An anomaly is a data point that does not fit the pattern of the rest. It should be identified by inspection of the table or graph, excluded from the best-fit line calculation only when you can justify the exclusion, and always commented on rather than silently deleted.
Limitations differ from errors. A limitation is a property of the method itself: the colorimeter cannot detect a colour change below a certain absorbance, the reaction is too fast to time by hand, the sample size is too small to be representative. Naming a limitation in specific terms earns far more credit than a generic sentence about 'human error'.
9. Analysis and Discussion |
Analysis is the in-depth discussion and explanation of the experimental data. Students need to compare the actual results with theoretical expectations, and to discuss possible sources of error and the limitations of the experiment itself. Analysis may also include statistical treatment of the results and measurement of correlation.
The strongest analyses do three things in order. First, describe the trend that the data show. Second, compare it quantitatively with the accepted or theoretical value. Third, explain any discrepancy using the specific errors and limitations identified earlier.
A quantitative comparison is often made through percentage error, which turns a numerical difference into something that can be judged against the uncertainty you calculated.
percentage error = ((experimental value − accepted value) ÷ accepted value) × 100%
For chemistry, the same logic applies to yield and to atom economy, both of which express how much of the theoretical maximum was actually achieved.
percentage yield = (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100%
If a graph is linear, the gradient usually carries physical meaning: resistance from a current-voltage graph, rate constant from a concentration-time graph, or enthalpy change from a temperature-time graph. Always state the units of the gradient and explain what it represents.
10. The Conclusion and Suggested Improvements |
The conclusion summarises the whole experiment. Students should review the aim, the design and the results, extract the main findings and conclusions, and propose directions for future research together with suggestions for improving the design.
so quantify the confidence you place in that answer, using the uncertainty you calculated. ' sistance was found to be 4.7 Ω ± 0.2 Ω, which is consistent with the stated value of 4.8 Ω' is a complete conclusion; 'the experiment worked well' is not.
Improvements should be targeted at the limitations you already named, and they must be realistic. Replacing a hand-held stopwatch with a light gate, increasing the number of repeats from three to five, or controlling temperature with a water bath are all concrete and achievable. Vague promises to 'be more careful' earn nothing.
11. References and Academic Integrity |
In a practical report, students must list all the literature and sources they have cited, which may include relevant textbooks, journal articles or online resources.
Use one consistent referencing style throughout and place it in the report, not in a footnote. A typical entry gives the author, the year, the title, the publisher or site name, and the date accessed for online sources. Theoretical values and accepted constants must always be referenced, because they are the benchmark against which your data are judged.
Academic integrity also covers the data themselves. Fabricating a reading, rounding a value to make it fit the expected trend, or copying a classmate's table are all misconduct, and in practical exams they are treated as such. Keep your raw notes and be prepared to show them.
12. Summary and a Common Pitfalls Checklist |
A-level practical reports are undeniably important for students of science. Carrying out experiments by hand and writing them up forces a deeper understanding of scientific principles, while developing practical skills and scientific ways of thinking. Every student should therefore treat this task seriously.
Because the same mistakes appear year after year, a short checklist before submission is worth more than an extra hour of rewriting. Check each item below against your own report and fix what is missing.
- Does the aim name both the independent and the dependent variable? |
- Are all control variables listed with their fixed values and reasons? |
- Is the risk assessment specific to each hazard? |
- Are raw and processed data kept in separate tables? |
- Does every column heading carry a quantity and a unit? |
- Is the graph drawn with a ruler, labelled and given a best-fit line? |
- Are uncertainties calculated rather than asserted? |
- Are anomalies identified, justified and commented on?
- Does the conclusion answer the aim and quote uncertainty? |
- Are all theoretical values and sources referenced? |
Above all, write the report for a reader who was not in the room. If a competent stranger can follow your reasoning from aim to conclusion, reproduce your experiment and see why you reached your answer, the report has done its job.
