1. What is History? |

History is the study of the past using evidence left behind. Historians ask questions, examine sources and interpret what happened. A primary source comes directly from the time being studied – for example a diary, a photograph or a weapon. A secondary source is created later, such as a textbook or a documentary. Being able to spot primary and secondary sources is the first step in thinking like a historian.

A fact is something that can be proven, such as 'The Battle of Hastings took place in 1066'. An opinion is a personal belief and may be biased. Bias means a source unfairly favours one side. When you evaluate a source, always ask: who made it, why, and who was the audience. These questions help you judge reliability and usefulness.

2. The Norman Conquest |

The Norman Conquest began in 1066. King Edward the Confessor died without an heir, leaving four claimants to the English throne: Harold Godwinson, who was crowned king; William, Duke of Normandy; Harald Hardrada of Norway; and the young Edgar Atheling. Harold defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in September 1066, then rushed south to face William.

At the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066, William's Norman knights and archers defeated Harold's army. Harold was killed, according to tradition, by an arrow to the eye. William then marched to London and was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066. The Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres long, tells the story of the conquest from the Norman point of view.

3. How William Kept Control: Feudalism |

William introduced the feudal system to control land and people. The king owned all the land and granted it to his tenants‑in‑chief (barons and bishops). In return, these lords swore an oath of loyalty and provided knights for the king's army. Below them were knights, who received land called a fief, and at the bottom, peasants worked the land and gave a share of their crops to their lord.

The Domesday Book, completed in 1086, was a massive survey of all land and property in England. It recorded who held each manor, how many ploughs, mills and animals were there, and what the land was worth. William used it to tax his people more fairly and to tighten his grip on the kingdom – the name 'Domesday' suggests there was no appeal against its findings, like the Day of Judgment.

4. Motte‑and‑Bailey Castles |

To secure his conquest, William built hundreds of castles. The earliest were motte‑and‑bailey castles made of wood. A motte was a steep mound with a wooden tower (keep) on top. The bailey was an enclosed yard at the base, surrounded by a wooden palisade and ditch, where soldiers, stables and workshops were housed. They could be built quickly – sometimes in just a few days – and provided strong defence.

Later, many wooden castles were rebuilt in stone. Stone keeps, such as the White Tower at the Tower of London, were stronger and fireproof, but more expensive and slower to build. Castles were not only military bases; they acted as administrative centres and symbols of Norman power over the Anglo‑Saxon population.

5. Everyday Life in a Medieval Village |

In medieval England, most people lived in villages and worked as peasants. A typical village centred on the manor house, the church, the mill and the common fields. Around 90% of the population depended on farming. Peasants grew crops such as wheat, barley and oats using the three‑field system: one field planted in autumn, one in spring, and one left fallow to recover its nutrients.

A peasant's home was usually a one‑room cruck house with wattle‑and‑daub walls and a thatched roof. Animals often lived inside for warmth. Life was hard: work followed sunrise and sunset, diet was simple and diseases were common. Yet communities shared labour at ploughing and harvest time, and festivals provided occasional relief.

6. The Role of the Church |

The Church was the most powerful institution in medieval Europe after the monarch. It owned huge amounts of land, collected tithes (a tenth of people's produce) and its leaders, such as bishops and abbots, often advised kings. The parish church was the centre of village life, where baptisms, weddings, funerals and festivals took place. Education was mainly in the hands of the Church, through monastery and cathedral schools.

Monks and nuns lived in monasteries and convents, dedicating their lives to prayer, study and helping the poor. Monasteries acted as hospitals, libraries and inns for travellers. The Church also preached that following its teaching would lead to heaven, while sin would lead to hell – a powerful way to influence people's behaviour.

7. The Black Death |

The Black Death was a devastating plague that struck England in 1348–1349. It was spread by fleas living on black rats and caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Symptoms included painful swellings (buboes), fever and coughing up blood. The disease spread quickly through towns and villages, killing about one‑third to one‑half of the population.

People at the time did not understand germs. They believed the plague was a punishment from God, caused by bad air (miasma) or the alignment of planets. Some desperately tried remedies like carrying herbs or whipping themselves in public. The massive death toll changed society: labour became scarce, peasants could demand higher wages, and the feudal system began to crumble.

8. Henry II and Thomas Becket |

Henry II, who ruled from 1154 to 1189, wanted to reduce the Church's legal power. He appointed his close friend Thomas Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury, expecting him to support royal authority. Instead, Becket fiercely defended the Church's right to try clergy in its own courts. A bitter quarrel broke out between the two former friends.

In 1170, four knights reportedly heard Henry exclaim, 'Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?' and travelled to Canterbury, where they murdered Becket on the steps of the cathedral altar. The murder shocked all of Christian Europe. Becket was made a saint, and his shrine became a major pilgrimage site. Henry was forced to do public penance, walking barefoot to Canterbury.

9. King John and Magna Carta |

King John, who reigned from 1199 to 1216, faced criticism for high taxes, losing lands in France, and falling out with the Church. His barons grew angry over his unfair rule. In 1215, they rebelled and captured London, forcing John to negotiate. At Runnymede in June 1215, John agreed to seal Magna Carta – the 'Great Charter'.

Magna Carta contained 63 clauses that limited the king's power. Key principles included: the king was not above the law; no free man could be imprisoned without trial or judgment by his equals; and a council of 25 barons would monitor the king's compliance. Although John ignored the charter soon after, Magna Carta laid the foundation for the rule of law and constitutional government.

10. Quick‑Fire Dates and Terms |

11. Top Exam Tips |

When answering source questions, always refer to the evidence. Quote a phrase from the source and explain what it tells you. Use the 'who, what, when, where, why' framework to evaluate reliability. Never just say a source is 'biased' – explain how that bias affects its message. For essay questions, structure your answer with a short introduction, two or three well‑developed paragraphs, and a conclusion that reaches a judgement.

Create a timeline from 1066 to 1350 and add key events as you revise. Flash cards with a term on one side and the definition on the other work brilliantly for the Feudal System, castle features and plague symptoms. And remember, history is a story: the better you narrate it to yourself, the longer you will remember it.
