1. What Is Psychology? |
Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the mind, behaviour and experience. It is not just common sense or guessing — psychologists use systematic methods to observe, measure and explain why people think, feel and act as they do. The four main goals of psychology are to describe, explain, predict and, where possible, change behaviour.
Psychology can be divided into several subfields. Biological psychology looks at the links between the brain, hormones and behaviour. Cognitive psychology investigates mental processes like memory, perception and problem-solving. Developmental psychology studies how people change from infancy to old age, and social psychology examines how other people influence our behaviour and attitudes.
The WJEC syllabus introduces these areas through practical examples and key studies, helping you to think like a psychologist and to evaluate evidence rather than simply accept it.

2. The Brain and Nervous System |
The nervous system is the body's rapid communication network. It is divided into the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which connects the CNS to the rest of the body. Neurones (nerve cells) are the basic building blocks that carry electrical signals at high speed.
A typical neurone has a cell body, branching dendrites that receive signals, and a long axon covered by a myelin sheath. The myelin sheath speeds up transmission. When an electrical impulse reaches the end of the axon, neurotransmitters are released into the synapse — the tiny gap between two neurones — allowing the signal to pass to the next cell.
Here is a simple summary of some key brain regions you need to know:
| Brain region | Function |
|---|---|
| Frontal lobe | Decision making, personality, problem solving |
| Temporal lobe | Hearing, memory, understanding language |
| Parietal lobe | Sensation (touch, temperature, pain), spatial awareness |
| Occipital lobe | Vision |
| Cerebellum | Balance, coordination, fine muscle control |
| Brain stem (medulla) | Automatic functions such as breathing and heartbeat |
Understanding these structures helps psychologists link specific functions to behaviour. For example, damage to the frontal lobe can affect impulse control, while problems in the temporal lobe can disrupt memory formation.
3. Memory: How We Remember |
Memory is the process of encoding, storing and retrieving information. Encoding is how we transform sensory input into a form that can be stored. Storage refers to keeping the information over time, and retrieval is the act of getting it back out when needed. Without memory, we would have no sense of personal identity or ability to learn.
The multi-store model, which is central to your studies, proposes three separate memory stores. Sensory memory holds a fleeting impression of sensory information (iconic for visual, echoic for auditory) for about half a second. If we pay attention, information moves to short-term memory (STM). STM has a limited capacity of around 7 +/- 2 chunks of information and a duration of about 18-30 seconds without rehearsal. Rehearsal keeps information active and can transfer it to long-term memory (LTM).
Long-term memory has a potentially unlimited capacity and duration. It stores facts (semantic memory), personal experiences (episodic memory) and skills (procedural memory). Forgetting happens through decay (memory fades with time), displacement (new information pushes out old in STM) or interference (other memories get in the way). Using techniques like chunking, mnemonics and distributed practice can improve your recall.
4. Learning: Classical and Operant Conditioning |
Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour due to experience. Two fundamental types of learning are classical conditioning and operant conditioning, both of which are essential on the WJEC Year 8 course.
of food (unconditioned stimulus, UCS) but eventually at the sound of a bell that had been paired with the food. The bell started as a neutral stimulus, became a conditioned stimulus (CS) after repeated pairing, and the salivation to the bell alone was the conditioned response (CR). Key terms: UCS (food) → UCR (salivation); NS (bell) + UCS → UCR; after conditioning, CS (bell) → CR (salivation). This process explains how we develop many automatic emotional responses, including some phobias.
关键词汇:UCS(食物)→ UCR(分泌唾液);NS(铃声)+ UCS → UCR;条件作用建立后,CS(铃声)→ CR(分泌唾液)。
Operant conditioning, studied by B.F. Skinner, focuses on how consequences shape voluntary behaviour. Reinforcement makes a behaviour more likely to occur again. Positive reinforcement involves adding something pleasant (e.g. praise, a reward). Negative reinforcement involves removing something unpleasant (e.g. turning off a loud noise when a lever is pressed). Punishment, in contrast, makes a behaviour less likely to recur. Positive punishment adds an unpleasant stimulus (e.g. a telling-off), while negative punishment removes something pleasant (e.g. losing screen time). Skinner demonstrated these principles using a Skinner box, where rats and pigeons learned to press levers for food or to avoid electric shocks.
A simple table can help you compare the two types of conditioning:
| Feature | Classical conditioning | Operant conditioning |
|---|---|---|
| Key psychologist | Pavlov | Skinner |
| Type of behaviour | Reflexive, involuntary (e.g. salivation) | Voluntary, goal-directed (e.g. pressing a lever) |
| Learning mechanism | Association between two stimuli | Consequences (reinforcement and punishment) |
5. Developmental Psychology: Attachment |
Developmental psychology studies how humans grow and change across the lifespan. One of the most important early topics is attachment — the deep, enduring emotional bond that forms between an infant and their primary caregiver. This bond is crucial for survival and for healthy social and emotional development.
John Bowlby's theory of attachment emphasised that infants are born with an innate tendency to form attachments. He proposed that this behaviour is evolutionary because it keeps the infant close to the caregiver, increasing chances of survival. Bowlby suggested there is a critical period (up to about 2-3 years) during which the attachment system is most active; serious disruptions during this time can lead to long-term social and emotional difficulties, a concept known as maternal deprivation.
Mary Ainsworth developed the 'Strange Situation' procedure to assess attachment quality. She identified three main attachment types: secure attachment (infant is distressed when the caregiver leaves but easily comforted upon return), insecure-avoidant (infant shows little distress on separation and avoids contact upon reunion), and insecure-resistant (infant is very distressed on separation, but resists comfort when the caregiver returns). Securely attached children tend to develop better social skills and emotional resilience.
6. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |
Social influence refers to the ways in which individuals change their thoughts, feelings or behaviours because of the real or imagined presence of others. Two key processes you need to know are conformity and obedience.
Conformity is the tendency to align our attitudes and actions with the norms of a group, even when no one explicitly asks us to do so. Solomon Asch's line-judgement study (1951) demonstrated this powerfully. Participants were asked to match a line to three comparison lines in a group where confederates deliberately gave wrong answers. About 75% of participants conformed at least once, giving an obviously incorrect answer to fit in. Asch identified reasons for conformity: normative social influence (wanting to be liked) and informational social influence (believing others know better).
Obedience involves following direct orders from an authority figure. Stanley Milgram's obedience study (1963) explored this in a dramatic way. Participants were told to deliver increasing electric shocks to a 'learner' (a confederate) for every wrong answer. Despite hearing cries of pain, 65% of participants continued to the maximum voltage when the experimenter insisted. Milgram's research suggested that ordinary people can commit harmful acts under orders. Ethical concerns about deception and psychological stress mean that modern versions of such experiments are much more carefully designed.
7. Mental Health and Wellbeing |
Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which an individual can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and contribute to their community. It is not simply the absence of mental illness. Your Year 8 course introduces mental health as something we all have, just like physical health, and it can fluctuate over time.
Common mental health problems you might discuss include anxiety (excessive worry that interferes with daily life) and depression (persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure). It is important to challenge stigma — the negative stereotypes and discrimination that surround mental illness — by talking openly and understanding that these are real medical conditions, not signs of personal weakness.
Ways to protect and improve mental wellbeing include building supportive friendships, staying physically active, getting enough sleep, practising mindfulness or relaxation techniques, and asking for help when needed. The biopsychosocial model explains that mental health is influenced by a combination of biological factors (e.g. genetics, brain chemistry), psychological factors (e.g. thinking patterns, coping skills) and social factors (e.g. family environment, peer pressure).
8. Introduction to Research Methods |
Psychology is an evidence-based science, so understanding research methods is a core skill. Researchers start with a theory or question and then develop a testable hypothesis — a clear, predictive statement about what they expect to find.
In an experiment, the researcher manipulates an independent variable (IV) to see its effect on a dependent variable (DV). For example, to test whether listening to music affects memory, the IV could be 'music vs no music' and the DV could be 'number of words recalled'. All other variables must be controlled (control variables) so that only the IV can cause any change in the DV. An extraneous variable is any unwanted factor that could affect the DV, and a confounding variable is one that actually does.
Research must follow strict ethical guidelines to protect participants. The British Psychological Society (BPS) sets out principles including informed consent, the right to withdraw, protection from harm, confidentiality and a full debrief at the end. Psychologists also consider the strengths and limitations of different research designs: laboratory experiments offer high control but may lack realism; field experiments are more natural but harder to control; and natural experiments take advantage of existing differences but mean the researcher cannot manipulate the IV.
Other methods include observations (structured or naturalistic), questionnaires and interviews, all of which produce qualitative or quantitative data. A good WJEC answer always links the method to the research aim and considers the reliability, validity and practical issues of the technique used.
