1. What Year 8 CCEA Physics Covers | 八年级 CCEA 物理的学习范围
CCEA Year 8 physics is organised around a small number of big ideas rather than a long list of separate facts. Pupils investigate energy and energy resources, forces and motion, electricity and magnetism, waves including light and sound, and the particle model of matter. The emphasis is on describing, explaining and predicting using simple models, correct units and clear scientific language.
Practical work is a compulsory part of the course. You must be able to use a ruler, stopwatch, thermometer, ammeter, voltmeter and newton meter safely, record results in a table, plot a graph, describe the pattern shown, and comment on sources of error such as reaction time, zero error or heat loss.
2. Understanding Energy |
scalar quantity, which means it has size but no direction, and larger amounts are often quoted in kilojoules, where 1 kJ = 1000 J.
Energy is not a substance that flows through pipes; it is a way of accounting for what a system can do. Physicists therefore describe energy as being stored in stores and moved by pathways, which is a more precise way of thinking than the old phrase forms of energy.
3. Energy Stores |
Common energy stores include the following. Learn one everyday example for each store, because exam questions frequently ask you to identify the store that increases or decreases in a described situation.
- Kinetic energy (movement) —
- Thermal energy (heat) —
- Light energy —
- Sound energy —
- Chemical energy (stored in food, batteries and fuels) —
- Elastic potential energy (stored in stretched or compressed springs) —
- Gravitational potential energy (stored in objects raised above the ground) —
- Nuclear energy (stored in the nucleus of atoms) —
Remember, energy is never 'used up' — it is transferred from one store to another. If a store seems to lose energy, another store somewhere must gain it.
4. Energy Transfers and Conservation |
Energy can be transferred between stores by four main pathways: by heating, by doing work (when a force moves an object), by electrical working, and by radiation (such as light or sound). Whenever you describe an energy change, name the store at the start, the pathway, and the store at the end.
When you turn on a lamp, electrical energy is transferred to light and thermal energy. The total energy before and after the transfer is always the same. This is the principle of conservation of energy.
Total energy before transfer = Total energy after transfer
In real devices some energy is always dissipated to the thermal store of the surroundings, which is why machines are never 100% efficient. A Sankey diagram, with an arrow whose width is proportional to the energy, is the standard way to show where the energy goes.
5. Energy Calculations and Efficiency |
Year 8 pupils are expected to substitute numbers into simple equations, always writing the equation, the substitution and the answer with the correct unit. The three most common energy equations are shown below, with mass m in kilograms, velocity v in metres per second, height change Δh in metres and gravitational field strength g in newtons per kilogram.
Eₖ = ½ × m × v² Eₚ = m × g × Δh P = E ÷ t
ercentage. Power is the rate of energy transfer, measured in watts (W), where 1 W = 1 J/s.
Efficiency = Useful energy output ÷ Total energy input × 100%
xample, a 100 J input with 25 J of useful light output has an efficiency of 25 ÷ 100 × 100% = 25% write that it has been dissipated or transferred to the thermal store of the surroundings.
6. Forces and Their Effects |
A force is a push or a pull that can change an object's speed, direction or shape. Force is measured in newtons (N) using a newton meter. Forces always come in pairs acting between two objects, and every force has both a size and a direction, so forces are vector quantities.
Contact forces act only when objects touch: friction, air resistance, water resistance, tension, compression and the normal contact force. Non-contact forces act at a distance: gravity, magnetic force and electrostatic force. Friction always opposes motion and transfers kinetic energy to the thermal store of the surfaces.
Weight is the force of gravity on a mass, and is calculated with the equation below. On Earth g is about 9.8 N/kg, often rounded to 10 N/kg in questions, and mass stays the same everywhere while weight changes from planet to planet.
W = m × g
ced, the resultant force is zero and the object stays at rest or moves at a constant velocity. When the forces are unbalanced, the resultant force causes acceleration in its own direction. Springs obey Hooke' f proportionality, where k is the spring constant in N/m and x is the extension in metres.
7. Motion, Speed and Distance-Time Graphs |
Speed describes how far an object travels in a given time, and the standard equation is shown below. Typical units are metres per second (m/s), kilometres per hour (km/h) and miles per hour (mph); to convert m/s to km/h multiply by 3.6.
Speed = Distance ÷ Time Acceleration = Change in velocity ÷ Time taken
Average speed uses the total distance and the total time, while instantaneous speed is the speed at one moment. Acceleration is measured in metres per second squared (m/s²) and is positive when an object speeds up and negative (deceleration) when it slows down.
On a distance-time graph, the gradient equals the speed, a horizontal line means the object is stationary, a straight sloping line means constant speed, and a curve means the speed is changing. On a velocity-time graph, the gradient gives the acceleration and the area under the line gives the distance travelled.
8. Electricity: Circuits, Current and Charge |
An electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge around a complete circuit. Current is measured in amperes (A) with an ammeter connected in series with the component. Conventional current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of a cell, opposite to the direction of electron flow.
In a series circuit the current is the same at every point and there is only one path for the charge. In a parallel circuit the current splits between the branches, and the current from the cell equals the sum of the currents in the branches.
Q = I × t
Charge Q is measured in coulombs (C), current I in amperes (A) and time t in seconds (s). Circuit symbols must be learned accurately: cell, battery, lamp, switch, resistor, variable resistor, ammeter, voltmeter, diode and fuse.
9. Voltage, Resistance and Ohm's Law |
Potential difference, often called voltage, is the energy transferred per unit charge and is measured in volts (V) with a voltmeter connected in parallel across a component. A 1.5 V cell transfers 1.5 joules of energy to each coulomb of charge that passes through it.
Resistance is a measure of how difficult it is for current to flow, measured in ohms (Ω). Provided the temperature stays constant, current through a resistor is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, which is Ohm's law.
V = I × R
In a series circuit the total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances, so adding resistors reduces the current. In a parallel circuit the total resistance is smaller than the smallest individual resistance because there is more than one path for the charge.
The resistance of a filament lamp increases as it heats up, so its current-voltage graph curves; a fixed resistor gives a straight line through the origin; and a diode allows current in one direction only, giving a sharp bend in its graph.
10. Magnetism | 磁
Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Like poles repel and unlike poles attract, and this force acts without contact. The magnetic field is the region around a magnet where a magnetic material or another magnet feels a force, and the field is strongest at the poles.
Field lines are drawn from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet, and the closer the lines the stronger the field. Only iron, steel, cobalt and nickel (and some alloys) are magnetic materials; copper, aluminium and plastic are not.
An electromagnet is a coil of wire carrying a current, usually wrapped around an iron core. Its strength increases if the current is increased, if the number of turns is increased, or if an iron core is used, and it can be switched on and off, which is why it is used in cranes, relays and loudspeakers.
A current-carrying wire in a magnetic field experiences a force, called the motor effect. This force is increased by a larger current, a stronger magnetic field or a longer length of wire in the field, and it is the principle behind electric motors. The Earth itself behaves like a huge magnet with a magnetic field that compasses align with.
11. Waves: Light and Sound |
A wave transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. All waves can be described by their amplitude, wavelength, frequency in hertz (Hz) and period. Transverse waves, such as light and water waves, vibrate at right angles to the direction of travel, while longitudinal waves, such as sound, vibrate along the direction of travel.
v = f × λ
, is reflected by mirrors at equal angles, refracts when it changes speed between media, and disperses into a spectrum through a prism.
Sound is produced by vibrating objects and needs a medium such as air, water or a solid; it cannot travel through a vacuum. In air at room temperature sound travels at about 340 m/s, and the human ear can detect frequencies from roughly 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz. Above this range sound is called ultrasound.
