1. Welcome to WJEC Physics | 欢迎学习 WJEC 物理
Year 8 physics in the WJEC curriculum builds on your earlier investigations of how things move, heat up, light up, and interact. This course encourages you to ask questions, design simple experiments, and use mathematics to describe patterns. You will see physics in action everywhere – from the sports field to the night sky.
2. Scientific Method and Lab Safety |
Every physicist follows a systematic process: observing, hypothesising, testing, and concluding. You will learn to identify independent, dependent, and control variables in an investigation. Always remember to wear safety goggles, tie back long hair, and never run in the lab. Report any breakages immediately to your teacher.
- Always listen to the teacher’s instructions before starting.
- Use heat‑proof mats when working with Bunsen burners.
- Wash hands after handling any chemicals or materials.
3. Forces and Motion |
Forces are pushes or pulls that can change an object’s speed, direction, or shape. In Year 8, you will measure forces in newtons (N) using a spring balance. A stationary object stays at rest unless a resultant force acts on it. When forces are balanced, the object maintains its motion; unbalanced forces cause acceleration or deceleration.
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
- Friction always opposes motion and produces heat.
- Air resistance increases with speed and surface area.
- ht (N) are different: weight = mass × gravitational field strength (g = 10 N/kg on Earth).
4. Energy Stores and Transfers |
Energy is the ability to do work. The main energy stores you will study include kinetic (movement), thermal (heat), chemical (food, fuel), elastic potential (stretched springs), and gravitational potential (height). Energy can be transferred mechanically, electrically, by heating, or by radiation. In any transfer, the total amount of energy stays the same – this is the principle of conservation of energy.
For example, when a ball is thrown upwards, kinetic energy is transferred to gravitational potential energy. As it falls, the transfer reverses, and some energy is always dissipated as thermal energy due to air resistance.
Efficiency = (useful energy output ÷ total energy input) × 100%
5. Introduction to Electricity |
In Year 8 you will construct simple circuits and draw them using standard symbols. You need to know the symbols for a cell, battery, lamp, switch, resistor, variable resistor, and voltmeter. Current (measured in amperes, A) is the flow of electric charge. In a series circuit, the current is the same everywhere; in a parallel circuit, the current splits along the branches.
Voltage (potential difference) is measured in volts (V) and provides the 'push' that drives the current around the circuit. Adding more cells in series increases the voltage. A resistor limits the current and can be used to control the brightness of a lamp.
| Component | Symbol Hint |
| Cell | Long line (+) and short line (–) |
| Lamp | Circle with a cross |
| Switch (open) | Break in the line |
6. Conductors, Insulators and Resistance |
Materials that allow electric current to flow easily are called conductors (e.g., copper, aluminium). Insulators (e.g., rubber, plastic) do not allow current to flow. Resistance is a measure of how difficult it is for current to pass through a component. It is measured in ohms (Ω). A longer or thinner wire has higher resistance; a thicker or shorter wire has lower resistance.
You will investigate how resistance changes with the length of a wire. Plotting a graph of resistance against length should give a straight line through the origin, showing they are directly proportional.
7. Waves: Light and Sound |
lection (angle of incidence = angle of reflection) and refraction, where light changes speed and direction when it enters a different medium. A convex lens can focus light to a point.
Sound is a longitudinal wave that requires a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to travel. It cannot travel through a vacuum. The loudness of a sound depends on its amplitude; the pitch depends on its frequency. Humans can normally hear frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.
- Echo: a reflected sound wave heard after the original sound.
- Ultrasound: sound waves with frequencies above 20,000 Hz, used in medicine and cleaning.
8. Heating and Thermal Energy |
Heat can be transferred in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction happens best in solids, especially metals, because their free electrons can carry thermal energy. Convection occurs in fluids (liquids and gases) – warmer, less dense fluid rises while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a convection current. Thermal radiation is infrared radiation that can travel through a vacuum and does not require particles.
Insulation reduces unwanted heat transfer. Examples include double glazing, loft insulation, and wearing layers of clothing. A vacuum flask minimises all three heat transfers: it has a silvered inner surface to reflect radiation, a vacuum to stop conduction and convection, and a tight stopper.
9. The Solar System and Gravity |
Our Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, and asteroids. Gravity is the force of attraction between all objects with mass. It keeps planets in orbit around the Sun and the Moon in orbit around Earth. The closer objects are, the stronger the gravitational pull between them; larger masses also produce greater gravitational forces.
Weight on a planet is the gravitational pull on an object. Your mass stays the same wherever you are, but your weight changes with the strength of gravity. On the Moon, gravity is about 1/6 of Earth’s, so you would weigh about 1/6 of your Earth weight.
Weight (N) = Mass (kg) × Gravitational field strength (N/kg)
10. Key Mathematical Skills |
le converting units: 1 km = 1000 m, 1 hour = 3600 seconds. When drawing graphs, label axes with quantity and unit, use a sensible scale, and draw a line of best fit. A straight line through the origin indicates a directly proportional relationship.
- Mean = sum of measurements ÷ number of measurements
- Always include units in your final answer and in table headings.
- Use Δ (delta) to represent 'change in', e.g. Δt = change in time.
11. Practical Investigations and Data Analysis |
WJEC places great importance on 'Working Scientifically'. You will plan an investigation, identifying the independent variable (what you change), the dependent variable (what you measure), and control variables (what you keep the same). After collecting results, look for patterns and possible anomalies – results that do not fit the trend. Evaluate your method by suggesting improvements and identifying sources of error, such as reaction time or zero errors on a meter.
Always record readings to the precision of the instrument used. For example, if a ruler has millimetre markings, readings should be given to the nearest millimetre (e.g. 12.3 cm, not 12 cm). Repeat measurements and calculate the mean to improve reliability.
12. Bridging the Gap: From Year 7 to Year 8 | 从七年级到八年级的衔接
In Year 7 you explored basic forces, simple circuits, and the particle model of matter. Year 8 takes you further: you will quantify forces with calculations, model energy transfers using Sankey diagrams, explain electrical conduction using electrons, and link the particle model to pressure and heat transfer. Stay curious and practise explaining concepts in your own words. This bridging course has given you a sneak preview – now it's time to dive deeper when school starts.
