The guide follows the logic of the exam itself: first you decode what you hear, then you judge how it works, and finally you speak about it with control and confidence. Work through the twelve sections in order, or jump straight to the parts you find hardest. Every section includes bilingual explanations, worked examples and exam-style phrasing you can reuse on the day.
1. Understanding the Assessment Format |
The speaking and listening paper typically consists of two parts. First, you will listen to one or more short audio clips - often a radio advertisement, a podcast extract, or a news bulletin. You will then answer a series of questions that test your comprehension, your ability to identify media techniques, and your analytical thinking. The second part requires you to deliver a short spoken response, such as a persuasive pitch for a product or a critical commentary on an audio clip. Familiarising yourself with this format reduces anxiety and helps you allocate your time wisely.
Most clips are played twice, and you normally receive a short planning window before the speaking task. Use that window to write no more than five keywords on your planning sheet: a thesis, two pieces of evidence, one technique and one effect. Writing full sentences wastes time you need for rehearsing your opening line.
| Component | What you do | Marks focus |
| Part A - Listening | Listen to clip(s), answer short and extended questions | Comprehension, terminology, evidence, inference |
| Part B - Speaking | Deliver a pitch, commentary or review to the class or examiner | Structure, expression, delivery, engagement |
Assessment criteria often focus on comprehension accuracy, use of media terminology, clarity of expression, and the ability to support your points with evidence from the audio. For the speaking component, your voice projection, pace and engagement with the listener are also marked.
2. The Three Listening Skills You Must Master |
Every listening question in a media paper sits in one of three bands. Literal comprehension asks what was said: names, prices, dates, slogans. Inference asks what was implied: mood, attitude, target audience. Evaluation asks how effective the text is and why. If you can label the skill a question demands, you will answer in the right register rather than simply repeating the clip.
- Literal: "The advert states the price is 4.99 and the offer ends on Friday."
- Inference: "The warm, hushed voice suggests the product is meant for parents seeking calm."
- Evaluation: "The rising jingle makes the slogan memorable, which strengthens brand recall."
A reliable structure for any evaluation answer is technique plus evidence plus effect, often shortened to TEE. State the technique, quote the exact moment, then explain the effect on the listener.
T + E + E = Technique + Evidence + Effect
3. Decoding Audio Media Texts: Ads, Podcasts, Interviews |
Different audio genres carry different conventions, and examiners reward candidates who notice them. A radio advertisement usually compresses persuasion into 30 seconds using a voiceover, a jingle and a tagline. A podcast extract is conversational and relies on host persona, editing and audience address. An interview depends on question design, interruption and relative power between speakers.
| Genre | Typical features | What to listen for |
| Radio advert | Voiceover, jingle, tagline, urgency | Repetition, imperatives, price cues |
| Podcast | Host persona, chatty register, direct address | Informal lexis, laughter, personal stories |
| Interview | Question-and-answer, interruptions, pauses | Who controls the floor, hedging language |
| News bulletin | Formal register, authority, sound bites | Neutral tone, statistics, named sources |
When you identify the genre in the first ten seconds, you already know which techniques are likely to appear. That prediction makes the second listening far more efficient.
4. Media Terminology Bank for Top Marks |
Marks are awarded for precise language, not for vague praise. Saying "the music is nice" earns nothing; saying "the non-diegetic string motif signals a shift from tension to resolution" earns credit. Build a mental bank of terms and practise slotting them into full sentences.
- Sound terms: diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, soundbed, ambience, jingle, sonic logo, sting, fade in, fade out, cross-fade.
- Voice terms: voiceover, mode of address, direct address, register, tone, prosody, intonation, stress, pitch, pace, pause, projection.
- Persuasion terms: imperative, rhetorical question, rule of three, hyperbole, inclusive pronoun, emotive lexis, social proof, testimonial, urgency cue.
- Structure terms: hook, anchor, sound bridge, cue, sound bite, tagline, call to action.
Use each term once or twice, not ten times. Accurate repetition of a single idea looks like padding; a varied but controlled vocabulary looks like expertise.
5. Identifying Persuasive Techniques in Audio |
Audio persuasion works on three levels: what the text says, how it sounds, and who it seems to be speaking to. Classical rhetoric still describes this well: ethos builds trust through expert voices or brand heritage, pathos triggers feeling through music and emotive lexis, and logos appeals to reason through statistics and comparisons.
AIDA = Attention → Interest → Desire → Action
Most 30-second advertisements follow the AIDA sequence. The opening sound effect grabs attention, the middle section builds interest and desire through benefits and music, and the closing tagline delivers the action: "Book today" or "Visit our website now."
- Rule of three: "Faster, lighter, tougher" - rhythmic and easy to remember.
- Inclusive pronoun: "our community", "we all deserve" - creates belonging.
- Urgency cue: "only until Sunday", "while stocks last" - forces quick decisions.
- Sound branding: a three-note sonic logo that makes the brand recognisable in two seconds.
6. Structuring Your Spoken Response |
A high-scoring spoken response has a recognisable shape. Open with a hook, state your thesis in one sentence, develop three main points, each supported by audio evidence, acknowledge one counterpoint, then close by returning to your thesis. This shape works for a product pitch, a review and a critical commentary alike.
- Hook: a striking question or statistic from the clip ("Ninety per cent of listeners never notice the soundbed - but it is doing all the work.")
- Thesis: "This advert succeeds because its sound design builds trust before the product is ever named."
- Points: one per technique - soundbed, voiceover tone, tagline placement.
- Counterpoint: "Some listeners may find the repetition irritating, yet it is precisely that irritation that makes the slogan stick."
- Conclusion: one sentence that echoes the thesis without repeating it word for word.
Plan rough timings of roughly 15 per cent hook, 20 per cent thesis and roadmap, 50 per cent main points, and 15 per cent counterpoint and conclusion. If your task lasts two minutes, that means about 18 seconds for the opening and no more than 60 seconds on the body.
7. Delivery Skills: Voice, Pace and Emphasis |
Content alone does not secure top marks; delivery is assessed separately. A steady conversational pace of roughly 130 to 150 words per minute is comfortable for listeners. Speak slightly slower than usual, breathe at punctuation points, and vary your pitch so that key terms stand out.
| Delivery feature | Weak version | Strong version |
| Pace | Rushed, sentence after sentence | Steady, with pauses after key claims |
| Pitch | Flat monotone | Rise on questions, fall on conclusions |
| Stress | Every word equally loud | Emphasis on terminology and evidence |
| Filler | "um", "like", "you know" | Silent pause instead of a filler word |
Rehearse standing up, at full volume, ideally recorded on a phone. Listening back once is the fastest way to hear your own filler words and rushed endings.
8. Using Evidence from the Audio Clip |
Evidence in a media answer means a specific moment, quoted accurately and located clearly. Use timestamps if you have them and short direct quotations if you do not. The formula that never fails is: at [point], the [technique] does [effect], for example "[quote]".
- Weak: "The music makes it exciting."
- Strong: "At 00:18, the non-diegetic drumbeat accelerates as the voiceover lists the three benefits, creating a sense of momentum."
- Weak: "The man sounds friendly."
- Strong: "The presenter uses an informal, inclusive register - "we all know the feeling" - which positions the listener as part of a community rather than a customer."
Two accurate pieces of evidence beat five vague ones. Always attach an effect to the quotation; a quote without analysis is just transcription.
9. Analysing Purpose, Audience and Context |
Media texts are made to do something for someone in some situation. Purpose may be to persuade, inform, entertain, warn or sell. Audience may be defined by age, interest, lifestyle or spending power. Context covers the platform, the time of broadcast and the wider cultural moment.
P → A → C = Purpose → Audience → Context
For example, a breakfast radio advert for a phone network may aim to persuade (P) commuters aged 25 to 40 (A) during the morning rush when listeners are half-attentive and need a simple, repeatable message (C). Every technique then makes sense: short sentences, a memorable sonic logo and repetition of one price.
Add representation to your analysis when relevant: how are women, teenagers, older people or regions portrayed? Ask whose voice is heard and whose is silent, then explain what that choice suggests.
10. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见失分点与规避方法
Most lost marks come from a small set of repeated errors rather than from lack of knowledge. Recognising them now means you can correct them before the exam rather than during it.
- Retelling instead of analysing: describing what happens in the clip rather than how and why it works. Fix: always add "which means" or "so that".
- Feature spotting: listing techniques without explaining their effect. Fix: one technique, one effect, every time.
- Ignoring command words: writing about the wrong focus. Fix: underline "explain", "compare", "evaluate" before you start.
- Overlong answers: running out of time on question one. Fix: match answer length to mark value, roughly one point per mark.
- Reading a script flatly: sounds memorised and unengaged. Fix: use note-form prompts and look up between points.
One final pitfall: silence after a mistake. If you mispronounce a term or lose your place, pause, breathe and restate the sentence cleanly. Examiners mark the whole performance, not a single stumble.
11. Practice Plan and Revision Timetable |
Four weeks of short, regular practice is far more effective than one long session the night before. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes on four days a week, alternating listening drills with recorded speaking practice.
| Week | Listening focus | Speaking focus |
| 1 | Transcribe one 30-second advert; label every sound | Read your analysis aloud, 60 seconds, timed |
