📚 Singapore's Ten Oldest Schools: St Gabriel's, Raffles Institution and the Oldest Girls' School in Southeast Asia |
Singapore's education system is admired around the world for its results, yet its foundations reach back far beyond independence in 1965. During the colonial period, missionaries, merchants and community leaders founded a series of old schools that gave the island its first classrooms, its first girls' schools and its first community-run institutions. This article traces ten of the oldest schools in Singapore - from St Margaret's, the oldest girls' school in Southeast Asia, to Raffles Institution, St Joseph's Institution and St Gabriel's School - and explains what their founding stories still tell us about education today.
1. The Historical Roots of Singapore Education |
The starting point of modern education in Singapore is closely tied to 19th-century missionary activity. In 1842, the British missionary Maria Dyer stopped in Singapore while travelling to China. Seeing how few educational opportunities local girls had, she founded St Margaret's School in the same year. The school was not only the oldest girls' school in Southeast Asia; its establishment also marked the beginning of institutionalised female education in Singapore.
In the early colonial period, educational resources were extremely scarce, and most provision came from religious bodies. These early schools, such as St Margaret's, mainly served particular communities and taught basic literacy, arithmetic and religious knowledge. Their appearance planted the first seeds of the diverse, inclusive national education system that Singapore would later build.
2. St Margaret's School: The Oldest Girls' School in Southeast Asia |
St Margaret's School holds a special place in the region's history. Founded in 1842 by Maria Dyer, the wife of a missionary bound for China, it is widely recognised as the oldest girls' school in Southeast Asia. Its founding was not a planned colonial policy but the response of one woman to a visible social gap: girls in early colonial Singapore had almost no route into formal schooling.
- Founded: 1842, during a stopover on the journey to China.
- Founder: Maria Dyer, a British missionary.
- Significance: The oldest girls' school in Southeast Asia and the start of institutionalised female education in Singapore.
- Curriculum of the era: basic literacy, arithmetic and religious instruction, delivered to a specific community.
The school's long survival matters because it shows how private religious initiative filled a gap that neither the colonial state nor local society was yet ready to fill. That pattern - voluntary effort first, public system later - repeats across almost every school in this list.
3. Raffles Institution: From Free School to Elite Institution |
The oldest surviving school in Singapore today is Raffles Institution, but it did not begin under that name. It was initiated in 1823 by Sir Stamford Raffles and was first known as the Singapore Free School. Only in 1868 was it formally renamed Raffles Institution, and over time it developed into an elite boys' school.
Raffles Institution has had a profound influence on Singapore's nation-building. Its well-known alumni include Yusof Ishak, the first President of Singapore, and Benjamin Henry Sheares, the second President, as well as several cabinet ministers. Its educational model and philosophy provided an important reference for the academic excellence and leadership training that shaped Singapore's education tradition after independence.
- 1823: founded as the Singapore Free School on Raffles's initiative.
- 1868: renamed Raffles Institution.

4. Catholic Education and St Joseph's Institution |
The Catholic Church played a key role in Singapore's early education. In 1852, a French priest named Jean-Marie Beurel opened a boys' school to support missionary work. The school was at first called St John's Institution and was renamed St Joseph's Institution in 1867, making it the oldest Catholic school in Singapore.
The establishment of St Joseph's Institution was the标志 example of systematic Catholic involvement in local education. Buildings on its original site were gazetted as a national monument in 1992, and the site is now occupied by the Singapore Art Museum. The school's trajectory illustrates the lasting role of religious institutions in shaping Singapore's social and cultural development.
Beurel's work did not stop with boys. He also invited the Infant Jesus Sisters to Singapore in 1854, which led to the founding of the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus and, eventually, to one of the largest Catholic girls' school networks in the country.
5. The Chinese Community and the Local School-Founding Movement |
As the Chinese community's economic position in Singapore improved, local Chinese leaders began actively founding schools. In 1885, the businessman Gan Eng Seng donated funds to establish the Eng Hwa Free School, which was later renamed Gan Eng Seng School. It was the first school to be wholly donated and supported by the Straits Chinese.
Gan Eng Seng's purpose in running the school was to give children from poor families the chance to learn both English and Chinese, breaking a situation in which educational resources were monopolised. His action inspired more members of the Chinese community to found schools through their own efforts, promoted the development of mother-tongue education, and strengthened the community's autonomy in educational affairs.
- 1885: Eng Hwa Free School founded with Gan Eng Seng's donation.
- Later: renamed Gan Eng Seng School.
- First of its kind: the first school wholly funded and supported by Straits Chinese.
- Later wave: community schools such as Tao Nan School (1906), founded by the Hokkien Huay Kuan, continued the same tradition.
6. The Expansion of Girls' Education |
Education for girls expanded noticeably in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1887, Sophia Blackmore, an Australian missionary who had been invited by an Indian pastor, founded the Methodist Girls' School in Singapore.
