📚 Year 8 WJEC English: Quick Formula & Rule Handbook | WJEC 八年级英语:公式定理速查手册
English is a subject of patterns and structures. Just like maths has formulas and science has laws, English has its own 'rules' that help you craft clear sentences, powerful paragraphs and imaginative writing. This handbook gathers the essential grammar, punctuation and writing techniques you will meet in Year 8 WJEC English, presented as quick-reference formulas. Use it to revise key concepts, avoid common mistakes and feel confident when tackling reading and writing tasks.
英语是一门讲究模式与结构的学科。就像数学有公式、科学有定律一样,英语也有自己的“规则”,能帮你写出清晰的句子、有力的段落和富有想象力的文章。这本手册汇集了你在 WJEC 八年级英语课程中会遇到的核心语法、标点和写作技巧,以速查公式的形式呈现。用它来复习重点概念、避免常见错误,并在应对阅读和写作任务时充满信心。
1. The Eight Parts of Speech | 八大词性
Every word in English belongs to one of eight categories, known as parts of speech. Understanding them is like knowing the ingredients before you cook.
英语中的每个单词都属于八大类别之一,即词性。理解词性就像做饭前先认识食材。
| English Term | 中文术语 | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noun | 名词 | Names a person, place, thing or idea | teacher, Cardiff, freedom |
| Pronoun | 代词 | Replaces a noun | she, they, it, myself |
| Verb | 动词 | Shows action or a state of being | run, is, imagine |
| Adjective | 形容词 | Describes a noun or pronoun | brave, gloomy, Welsh |
| Adverb | 副词 | Describes a verb, adjective or other adverb; often ends in '-ly' | quickly, very, there |
| Preposition | 介词 | Shows relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word | in, on, under, between |
| Conjunction | 连词 | Joins words, phrases or clauses | and, but, because, although |
| Interjection | 感叹词 | Expresses sudden emotion | Wow! Ouch! Oh no! |
The same word can sometimes belong to different parts of speech depending on its use in a sentence. For example, 'light' can be a noun (turn on the light) or an adjective (a light bag).
同一个词有时根据在句子中的用法可以属于不同的词性。例如,“light”可以是名词(打开灯)或形容词(一个轻的包)。
2. Sentence Types Formula | 句型公式
WJEC expects you to vary your sentence structures for effect. Memorise these three main types.
WJEC 期望你能变换句型以达到不同效果。请记住以下三种主要句型。
Simple sentence: one independent clause = Subject + Verb + (Object/Complement). The dragon roared.
简单句:一个独立分句 = 主语 + 动词 +(宾语/补语)。龙吼叫了。
Compound sentence: two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). The sun set, and the stars appeared.
并列句:两个独立分句由并列连词连接(FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)。太阳落山了,星星出现了。
Complex sentence: one independent clause + at least one dependent clause, often using subordinating conjunctions (because, although, when, if, since, while). Although she was tired, she finished her homework.
复合句:一个独立分句 + 至少一个从属分句,常用从属连词(because, although, when, if, since, while)。虽然她很累,她还是完成了作业。
For Year 8 writing tasks, aim to include a mix of all three. A paragraph with only simple sentences can feel childish, while too many long complex sentences may confuse the reader.
在八年级的写作任务中,尽量混合使用这三种句型。只有简单句的段落会显得幼稚,而过多长复合句又会让读者困惑。
3. Basic Punctuation Rules | 基本标点规则
Punctuation acts as the traffic signals of writing. These are the non-negotiables for accurate writing.
标点是写作中的交通信号。以下是准确写作中必须遵守的规则。
Full stop (.) - ends a statement. Question mark (?) - ends a direct question. Exclamation mark (!) - shows strong feeling; use sparingly.
句号 (.) - 结束陈述句。问号 (?) - 结束直接问句。感叹号 (!) - 表达强烈情感;请节制使用。
Comma (,) - separates items in a list: I packed a book, a pen, and a ruler. It also separates clauses, especially after a fronted adverbial: Slowly, the door creaked open. Never use a comma to join two complete sentences alone – that creates a comma splice.
逗号 (,) - 分隔列表中的项目:我装了一本书、一支笔和一把尺子。 它也分隔分句,尤其是在前置状语之后:慢慢地,门吱呀一声开了。 切勿仅用逗号连接两个完整的句子——这会形成逗号拼接错误。
Apostrophe (') - has two jobs: to show possession (the student's desk = one student, the students' desk = many students) and to show contraction (it's = it is). Never use an apostrophe for ordinary plurals.
撇号 (') - 有两个功能:表示所有格(the student's desk 一个学生的课桌,the students' desk 许多学生的课桌)和表示缩写(it's = it is)。切勿在普通复数后加撇号。
4. Subject-Verb Agreement Formula | 主谓一致公式
Every sentence must obey the rule: singular subject + singular verb; plural subject + plural verb.
每个句子都必须遵守规则:单数主语 + 单数动词;复数主语 + 复数动词。
In present tense, a third-person singular subject adds '-s' or '-es' to the base verb: She walks. He watches. The cat hisses. Plural subjects use the base form: They walk. The children watch.
在现在时中,第三人称单数主语会在动词原形后加 '-s' 或 '-es':她走路。他观看。猫发出嘶嘶声。 复数主语使用动词原形:他们走路。孩子们观看。
Watch out for tricky cases: collective nouns like 'team' or 'family' can be singular in British English if the group is acting as one unit (The team is winning), but plural if individuals are emphasised (The team are arguing among themselves). With 'either ... or' and 'neither ... nor', the verb agrees with the subject nearest to it: Neither the teacher nor the pupils were happy.
注意棘手的情况:集合名词如“team”或“family”在英式英语中,如果群体作为一个整体行动则用单数(The team is winning),但如果强调个体则用复数(The team are arguing among themselves)。在 'either ... or' 和 'neither ... nor' 中,动词与最靠近的主语保持一致:Neither the teacher nor the pupils were happy.
5. Common Tense Formulae | 常见时态公式
Year 8 students must be able to recognise and use a range of tenses. Use this table as a quick check.
八年级学生必须能识别和使用多种时态。用此表快速核对。
| Tense | Formula | Example | 中文 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Past | Subject + past form (verb + -ed or irregular) | I walked. She sang. | 一般过去时 |
| Present Perfect | Subject + have/has + past participle | I have eaten. He has arrived. | 现在完成时 |
| Past Progressive | Subject + was/were + verb -ing | We were reading. | 过去进行时 |
| Conditional (would) | Subject + would + base verb | If I were you, I would go. | 条件句(would 型) |
When writing stories, avoid slipping accidentally from past to present. Decide on a narrative tense and stick to it, unless you have a clear reason to shift, such as a flashback or character thought.
写故事时,避免无意中从现在时滑到过去时。确定一个叙事时态并坚持使用,除非有明确的理由转换,比如闪回或人物思想。
6. Figurative Language Toolkit | 比喻语言工具箱
WJEC rewards the use of figurative devices in descriptive and narrative writing. These 'formulas' help you create vivid images.
WJEC 在描述文和记叙文中鼓励使用比喻手法。这些“公式”能帮你创造生动的画面。
Simile: compares two things using 'like' or 'as'. Formula: X is like Y or X is as (adjective) as Y. The moon was like a silver coin.
明喻:用“like”或“as”比较两样事物。公式:X 像 Y 或 X 像 Y 一样(形容词)。月亮像一枚银币。
Metaphor: states that one thing is another. Formula: X is Y. Her voice was thunder.
暗喻:直接说一事物是另一事物。公式:X 是 Y。她的声音是雷声。
Personification: gives human qualities to an object or idea. Formula: Non-human thing + human action/feeling. The wind whispered through the trees.
拟人:赋予物体或观念以人的特质。公式:非人事物 + 人的动作/情感。风在树间低语。
Onomatopoeia: a word that sounds like what it describes. Buzz, sizzle, crunch. Use it sparingly to add sound texture.
拟声词:发音类似所描述声音的词。嗡嗡、咝咝、嘎吱。 适量使用以增加声音质感。
7. Persuasive Writing Formula: AFOREST | 说服写作公式:AFOREST
When writing to argue or persuade, WJEC tasks often ask for leaflets, letters or speeches. The acronym AFOREST helps you remember key techniques.
在进行议论或说服性写作时,WJEC 的任务常要求写传单、信件或演讲。缩写词 AFOREST 能帮你记住关键技巧。
A – Alliteration: repeating the same initial consonant sound. Dangerous, deadly dragons.

F – Facts: statements that can be proven true. Over 60% of students walk to school.
F – 事实:可以被证明为真的陈述。超过60%的学生步行上学。
O – Opinions: personal beliefs, often disguised as facts. It is clear that school uniform improves discipline.
O – 观点:个人信念,常伪装成事实。很明显校服改善了纪律。
R – Rhetorical questions: questions that don't need an answer but make the reader think. Do we really want to live in a world without trees?
R – 反问句:不需要回答但促使读者思考的问题。我们真的想生活在一个没有树木的世界吗?
E – Emotive language: words that provoke strong feelings. Heartbreaking, terrifying, magnificent.
E – 情感语言:激发强烈情感的词语。令人心碎的、恐怖的、壮丽的。
S – Statistics: numbers to support an argument. 82% of Year 8 pupils reported feeling less stressed after regular reading.
S – 统计数据:支持论点的数字。82% 的八年级学生报告在定期阅读后压力减轻。
T – Triples (rule of three): presenting three words, phrases or reasons in a row. We must act now, act together, act decisively.
T – 三连句(三法则):连续呈现三个词语、短语或理由。我们必须现在就行动、共同行动、果断行动。
Use at least three of these devices in any persuasive task to lift your mark.
在任何说服性任务中至少使用其中三项技巧,以提升你的分数。
8. PEEL Paragraph Formula | PEEL 段落公式
For analytical essays, especially on poetry or fiction, WJEC mark schemes reward structured paragraphs. The PEEL formula is your friend.
对于分析性文章,尤其是诗歌或小说分析,WJEC 评分标准奖励结构清晰的段落。PEEL 公式是你的好帮手。
P – Point: start by stating the main idea of the paragraph. The writer uses a metaphor to show the character's isolation.
P – 观点:开头陈述段落的主要观点。作者使用暗喻来表现角色的孤立。
E – Evidence: provide a quotation or specific example from the text. For example, 'a lone wolf howling at an empty moon.'
E – 证据:提供来自文本的引文或具体例子。例如,‘一只对着空月嚎叫的孤狼。’
E – Explanation: explain what the evidence shows. Zoom in on words and techniques. The word 'lone' emphasises his total solitude, and the image of the 'empty moon' suggests a vast, uncaring universe.
E – 解释:解释证据所表明的含义。聚焦于词语和技巧。“孤”一词强调了他彻底的孤独,而“空月”的意象暗示了一个广阔而无情的宇宙。
L – Link: connect back to the question or look ahead to the next point. This sense of isolation is directly linked to the poem's overarching theme of loss.
L – 连接:回扣问题或展望下一点。这种孤寂感与诗歌关于失去的核心主题直接相连。
9. Commonly Confused Words | 常见易混词
Even strong writers sometimes trip over these pairs. Learn their formulas to avoid losing marks for SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).
即使优秀的写作者有时也会在这些词上犯错。学会它们的用法,避免因 SPAG(拼写、标点和语法)被扣分。
Their / There / They're – 'Their' = belonging to them (their books); 'There' = location or placeholder (over there, there is); 'They're' = they are (They're coming).
Their / There / They're – 'Their' 表示他们的;'There' 表示地点或引导词;'They're' 是 they are 的缩写。
Your / You're – 'Your' = belonging to you (your turn); 'You're' = you are (You're late).
Your / You're – 'Your' 表示你的;'You're' 是 you are 的缩写。
To / Too / Two – 'To' = preposition or infinitive marker; 'Too' = also or excessively; 'Two' = the number 2.
To / Too / Two – 'To' 是介词或不定式标记;'Too' 表示也或过于;'Two' 是数字 2。
Effect / Affect – Generally, 'effect' is a noun (the result), 'affect' is a verb (to influence). The effect was dramatic. The storm affected the town.
Effect / Affect – 通常,'effect' 是名词(结果),'affect' 是动词(影响)。效果很显著。风暴影响了小镇。
10. Spelling Patterns and Plurals | 拼写模式与复数形式
WJEC expects accurate spelling. These patterns cover many of the errors Year 8 students make.
WJEC 期望拼写准确。以下模式涵盖了许多八年级学生犯的错误。
The 'i before e' rule: i before e except after c, when the sound is /ee/. believe, receive, ceiling. Exceptions: seize, weird, protein.
“i 前 e 后”规则:在发 /ee/ 音时,除非在 c 之后,否则 i 在 e 前。believe, receive, ceiling。例外:seize, weird, protein。
Adding suffixes: For words ending in -y, change y to i before adding -ed, -er, -est, -ly, unless the suffix begins with i or the word has a vowel before the y. happy → happily, carry → carried, but play → playing, worry → worrying.
加后缀:以 -y 结尾的单词,在加 -ed, -er, -est, -ly 前将 y 改为 i,除非后缀以 i 开头或单词在 y 前有元音。happy → happily, carry → carried,但 play → playing, worry → worrying。
Plurals: Most add -s. After -s, -x, -sh, -ch, -z, add -es (boxes, dishes). Words ending in -f or -fe often change to -ves (leaf → leaves, life → lives, but roof → roofs). Irregular plurals must be memorised: child → children, mouse → mice, foot → feet.
复数:大多数加 -s。以 -s, -x, -sh, -ch, -z 结尾的词加 -es(boxes, dishes)。以 -f 或 -fe 结尾的词常变为 -ves(leaf → leaves, life → lives,但 roof → roofs)。不规则复数需记忆:child → children, mouse → mice, foot → feet。
11. Reading Response Formula: PEE | 阅读回应公式:PEE
When answering reading comprehension questions or analysing a text, use the PEE chain to structure your answer.
在回答阅读理解问题或分析文本时,使用 PEE 链来组织答案。
P – Point: Make your point. The writer creates a tense atmosphere.
P – 观点:提出你的观点。作者营造了紧张的氛围。

E – 证据:给出简短引文或参考。短语“破裂的地板”暗示出了岔子。
E – Explain: Analyse the effect on the reader. The word 'cracked' makes us think of breakage and vulnerability, putting the reader on edge.
E – 解释:分析对读者的影响。“破裂的”一词让我们想到破损和脆弱,令读者感到不安。
For higher marks, extend to PEEZ (Zoom) or PEEL, but PEE remains the core formula.
要取得更高分数,可扩展为 PEEZ(放大)或 PEEL,但 PEE 仍是核心公式。
12. Quick Editing Checklist | 快速编辑清单
Spend the last 5 minutes of any writing task running through these points. It's a formula for catching silly mistakes.
