📚 Moreton Hall School English Essay Writing: 5 Techniques to Move from 15 to 22+ Marks | Moreton Hall School 高中英语作文如何从15分到22+:这5个技巧可直接套用
At Moreton Hall School, as in every serious English curriculum, an essay is not judged by how impressive the writer sounds but by how completely and accurately the task has been answered. Two students can write on the same topic, use almost identical ideas, and still finish seven marks apart. The gap between 15 and 22+ out of 25 is rarely a gap in intelligence; it is almost always a gap in technique. This article sets out five techniques that can be applied directly in the next essay you write, together with the marking logic that explains why each one works.
在 Moreton Hall School,也和所有严肃的英语课程体系一样,作文评分的依据从来不是"作者听起来多么华丽",而是"任务被完成得多么完整、多么准确"。两个学生写同一个题目,用的素材甚至相差无几,最终分数却可能拉开七分以上。25分制下,15分到22+分之间的差距,很少是智力差距,绝大多数是技术差距。本文给出五个可以直接套用的技巧,并解释背后的评分逻辑,让你明白它们为什么有效、该在什么时候用。
1. Where the Marks Actually Go | 分数到底丢在哪里
Essay marking looks subjective from the outside, but it is driven by a clear and unambiguous set of objective rules. Markers do not read an essay and then ask themselves whether they "liked" it. They work down a checklist: Was the format correct? Was every content point covered? Was the argument organised? Were the sentences varied? Was the language accurate? Each item carries a fixed share of the total.
作文评分从外部看似乎很主观,实际上遵循的是一套清晰、没有歧义的客观规则。阅卷人不是先读完文章再问自己"喜不喜欢",而是顺着一条清单逐项核对:格式对不对?内容要点齐不齐?论证有没有层次?句式有没有变化?语言准不准确?每一项都对应固定的分值。
This is why the first step towards 22+ is not writing more, but understanding where a typical 15-mark essay loses its marks. In practice, the losses cluster in the same places year after year, and they are almost entirely predictable.
| Task response | 任务完成度 | One or two content points missing or vague | 遗漏一两个要点或写得含糊 | All points covered, each developed | 要点全覆盖,且每个都有展开 |
| Structure | 结构 | Ideas listed rather than organised | 观点罗列,缺少组织 | Clear total, body, conclusion; topic sentences | 总分总清晰,段落主题句明确 |
| Sentence variety | 句式层次 | Same pattern repeated; subject-verb-object throughout | 句式重复,通篇主谓宾 | Simple, compound and complex sentences balanced | 简单句、并列句、复合句合理搭配 |
| Accuracy | 语言准确 | Frequent tense, agreement and article slips | 时态、一致、冠词错误频繁 | Errors are rare and never obscure meaning | 错误极少,且不影响理解 |
| Presentation | 卷面 | Heavy crossing out; cramped or uneven writing | 涂改多,字迹拥挤或潦草 | Neat, legible, well-spaced paragraphs | 工整清晰,段落间距合理 |
Read that table as a diagnosis sheet, not a list of complaints. If you score 15 today, you are almost certainly losing marks in four of these six rows at the same time.
请把这幅表当作诊断单,而不是一份抱怨清单。如果你现在的分数是15分,几乎可以肯定你在其中四行上同时失分。
2. Technique One: Format Rules Come First | 技巧一:格式规范是基础
Different genres carry different layout conventions, and this is the cheapest set of marks in the whole paper. A letter must contain a salutation, a body, a closing phrase and a signature; a notice must contain a heading, a date, a body and the issuing body. In school and public examination marking alike, format errors are treated as hard faults, and they cut straight into the base score before content is even evaluated.
不同文体有不同的格式要求,而这是整张卷子里最容易拿的一组分。书信必须包含称呼、正文、结尾敬语和署名;通知必须包含标题、日期、正文和发布单位。无论是在校内评分还是公开考试阅卷中,格式错误都被视为"硬伤",它会在内容被评价之前就先把基础分削掉一块。
Take the 2024 national examination Paper One applied writing task as an example. The prompt asked for a letter of suggestion. If the opening salutation or the closing signature is missing, marks are deducted for format even when the ideas in between are excellent. Format is therefore the very first thing to confirm before a single sentence of content is drafted.
以2024年新高考一卷的应用文为例,题目要求写一封建议信。如果遗漏了开头称呼或者结尾署名,哪怕中间的见解相当出色,依然会被扣掉格式分。所以在落笔写第一句内容之前,格式就是必须先确认的第一件事。
In real practice, students should have genre templates memorised, not half-remembered. Build one card per genre - letter, email, notice, speech, report, proposal - and write the compulsory elements at the top in your own hand. Then, in the exam, spend thirty seconds ticking them off. It takes half a minute and protects two or three marks.
实际训练中,学生应当把不同文体的格式模板牢记于心,而不是"记得差不多"。每个文体做一张卡片——书信、邮件、通知、演讲稿、报告、建议书——把强制要素亲手写在卡片顶端。考试时花三十秒逐项打勾,半分钟就能守住两到三分。
3. Technique Two: Decode the Prompt to Avoid Off-Topic Writing | 技巧二:审题精准避跑题
Prompt analysis means extracting two things from the question: the task instruction and the content points. Circle the key words before you plan anything. Those key words normally include the genre type, the intended reader, the list of content points and any special requirements such as word count or register.
审题的核心,是从题目中提取两样东西:任务指令和内容要点。在动笔规划之前,先把关键词圈出来。这些关键词通常包括文体类型、写作对象、要点清单,以及字数、语体之类的特殊要求。
Consider the classic prompt "invite a foreign teacher to a campus event". The compulsory elements are the name of the event, the time, the place, the purpose and the specific invitation itself. Ignore any one of them and the content is incomplete, which automatically costs marks in the task-response column.
以"邀请外教参加校园活动"这个经典题目为例,必须涵盖的要素包括活动名称、时间、地点、目的以及具体邀请本身。忽略其中任意一项,内容就不完整,任务完成度一栏会直接扣分。
At the same time, watch the invisible requirements. Person and tense are the two most commonly overlooked. If the letter is written to a teacher, the register must be polite; if the event has not happened yet, the future tense must dominate; if the word limit is 80 to 120 words, going to 160 is not a sign of ability but a failure of control.
同时要留意题目的隐形要求,其中人称和时态最容易被忽略。写给老师的信,语体必须礼貌;活动尚未发生,全文应以将来时为主;字数要求80到120词,写到160词不是能力的体现,而是控制力的失败。
The most reliable habit is to convert prompt analysis into answers to four questions: Who am I writing as? Who am I writing to? What must I include? How long and in what style? Answer those four in note form, and slipping off topic or dropping a content point becomes almost impossible.
最可靠的习惯,是把审题变成对四个问题的回答:我以什么身份写?我写给谁?我必须写进什么?写多长、用什么语体?把这四个答案用关键词记下来,跑题或者漏要点就几乎不可能发生了。
4. Technique Three: Build a Clear Logical Structure | 技巧三:逻辑结构需清晰
A logically clear essay almost always follows a total - part - total shape. The opening paragraph states the main idea, the middle paragraphs develop or describe it, and the closing paragraph summarises or echoes it. This shape is not a formula imposed by examiners; it exists because it allows a marker to grasp the thread of the essay within seconds.
逻辑清晰的文章,通常具备"总—分—总"的结构。开头段点明主旨,中间段展开论述或描述,结尾段进行总结或呼应。这种结构不是考官强加的套路,它之所以存在,是因为它能让阅卷老师在几秒钟之内抓住文章脉络。
In an argumentative essay, logic appears as the organic fusion of claim, evidence and reasoning. Every paragraph needs one clear topic sentence, and the sentences that follow must supply examples or analysis in support of it. Jumping between unrelated ideas is the single most common structural fault in essays that stall at 15.
在议论文里,逻辑体现为论点、论据和论证的有机融合。每个段落都必须有一个清晰的主题句,其后的句子要给出事例或分析予以支撑。思维跳跃,是停留在15分的作文里最常见的结构缺陷。
Connectors do the visible work of logic. Use "furthermore" and "in addition" to add, "however" and "nevertheless" to contrast, "therefore" and "consequently" to conclude, "for instance" to illustrate. Two cautions: do not begin every sentence with a connector, and never use a contrast word when the second idea actually agrees with the first.
连接词承担着逻辑的外显工作。用 furthermore、in addition 表示递进,用 however、nevertheless 表示转折,用 therefore、consequently 表示结论,用 for instance 表示举例。两点提醒:不要把每句话都用连接词开头;第二个观点如果与第一个一致,绝不能用转折词。
5. Technique Four: Vary Sentence Patterns to Show Depth | 技巧四:句式多样显层次
An essay written in one repeated pattern looks rigid, no matter how correct it is. Improving sentence variety does not mean piling up complex sentences. It means varying the structure while keeping accuracy intact, so that simple, compound and complex sentences are used in sensible proportion.
如果句式单一,文章再正确也会显得呆板。提升句式多样性,并不意味着盲目堆砌复杂句,而是在保证准确性的前提下进行变化,让简单句、并列句和复合句得到合理的搭配运用。
Concrete methods include changing how a sentence opens - with an adverbial, a participle phrase or a prepositional phrase rather than always the subject; combining two short simple sentences into a relative clause or an adverbial clause; and using emphatic or inverted structures sparingly, perhaps once in a whole essay, where the emphasis genuinely matters.
具体方法包括:变换句子开头,用状语、非谓语动词或介词短语起句,而不是永远以主语开头;把两个短简单句合并为定语从句或状语从句;在真正需要强调的地方,适度使用强调句或倒装句,全篇用一次即可。
Look at the difference in practice. A flat version reads: "The activity was meaningful. It helped us understand other cultures. We hope there will be more." A varied version reads: "By taking part in the activity, we came to understand other cultures far better than any textbook could have taught us."Same content, different score band.
看一组实际对比。平铺直叙的版本是:"The activity was meaningful. It helped us understand other cultures. We hope there will be more." 有变化的版本是:"By taking part in the activity, we came to understand other cultures far better than any textbook could have taught us." 内容相同,分数档次不同。
The key discipline here is that this must be accumulated and imitated in normal study time, not invented in the exam hall. Keep a notebook of sentence patterns you have met in reading, and rewrite one of your own sentences into each pattern once a week.
这里的关键纪律是:句式必须在平时积累、模仿,而不是在考场上临时创造。准备一个句型本,把阅读中遇到的句型记下来,每周挑一句自己的话改写成其中一个句型。
6. Technique Five: Language Accuracy Is the Lifeline | 技巧五:语言准确是生命线
Accuracy is where the largest single block of marks sits, and it is also where the most avoidable losses occur. High-frequency errors cluster tightly: verb tense, subject-verb agreement, singular and plural nouns, articles, and spelling. These are the so-called "low-level errors", and they damage the marker's perception of your language ability far more than one ambitious but slightly awkward sentence ever would.
语言准确性是分值占比最大的一块,也是可避免失分最多的一块。高频错误高度集中:动词时态、主谓一致、名词单复数、冠词使用和单词拼写。这些被称为"低级错误"的问题,对阅卷老师判断你语言能力造成的负面影响,远远超过一个用得有雄心但稍显笨拙的句子。
The way to avoid them is procedural rather than heroic. Finish the writing with time to spare, then check in a fixed order: verbs first, then nouns, then everything else. Verbs first means tense consistency, third-person -s, and the correct form after modal verbs. Nouns next means countable or uncountable, plural -s, and whether an article is required.
规避的方法靠流程,而不是靠临场发挥。写作完成后要留出专门的时间,按固定顺序排查:先动词,再名词,最后其他。先查动词,意味着检查时态是否一致、第三人称单数是否加了 -s、情态动词后形式是否正确。再查名词,意味着检查可数与不可数、复数 -s、以及是否需要冠词。
The final principle is restraint. Using vocabulary you fully control, and sentence patterns you can produce without hesitation, is safer than gambling on a rare expression that might be wrong. A correctly used common word scores; a misused impressive word does not.
最后一条原则是克制。使用自己完全能够确定的词汇、自己毫无问题的句型,要比冒险使用生僻而可能用错的表达稳妥得多。用对了的普通词能得分,用错了的高级词不能。
7. The Sixth Element: A Clean Script Adds Impression Marks | 第六个要素:卷面整洁添印象
Neatness is not written explicitly into most mark schemes, yet it directly shapes the marker's subjective judgement. Legible handwriting, reasonable word spacing and sensible paragraph divisions add lustre to good content. The opposite - heavy crossing out and scrawled letters - increases the reading burden and quietly lowers the impression.
卷面整洁程度虽然没有被明确写进多数评分标准,却会直接对阅卷老师的主观评判造成影响。书写清晰容易辨认、单词间距合理、段落分布恰当,能够为内容增色。相反,涂改过多、字迹潦草,则会增加阅读负担,悄悄拉低印象。
Daily handwriting practice helps: imitate a clear, rounded model such as the widely used examination script style, and aim for steady, even letterforms rather than speed. Then, in the exam itself, plan the content and the approximate length on the draft paper first, so that large-scale correction on the answer sheet never becomes necessary.
日常书写练习是有用的:模仿一种清晰、圆润的范本,比如广泛使用的考试规范字体,追求字母形态稳定匀称,而不是追求速度。考试时先在草稿纸上规划好内容与大致篇幅,这样就不会在答题卡上出现大面积修改。
Think of it this way: a tidy script is a friendly greeting handed to the marker before they read a single idea. It costs nothing and it is remembered.
可以这样理解:整洁的卷子,是你在阅卷老师读到任何一个观点之前,先递上的一份友好见面礼。它不花什么成本,却会被记住。
8. A Mark-by-Mark Breakdown from 15 to 22+ | 从15分到22+分的逐项拆解
It helps to see the two essays side by side in numbers. Using a 25-mark internal scale, a realistic distribution might be six marks for format and task response, five for structure, four for sentence variety, seven for accuracy, and three for presentation and overall impression.
用数字把两篇作文并排看会更清楚。按25分制估算,一个现实的分布是:格式与任务完成6分,逻辑结构5分,句式层次4分,语言准确7分,卷面与整体印象3分。
| Dimension | 维度 | Full | 满分 | 15-Mark Essay | 15分作文 | 22+ Essay | 22+分作文 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format and task | 格式与任务 | 6 | 3 to 4 | 6 |
| Structure | 结构 | 5 | 3 | 5 |
| Sentence variety | 句式 | 4 | 2 | 4 |
| Accuracy | 准确 | 7 | 4 | 6 to 7 |
| Presentation | 卷面 | 3 | 2 | 3 |
| Total | 合计 | 25 | 14 to 15 | 22 to 25 |
The crucial insight is that no single dimension accounts for the whole seven-mark gap. Two marks come from format and task completeness, two from structure, two from sentence control, and two or three from accuracy. You do not need a dramatic overhaul; you need four small disciplines applied consistently.
关键洞察在于:没有任何一个维度独自承担了这七分的差距。格式与任务完整性贡献约两分,结构约两分,句式控制约两分,语言准确约两到三分。你不需要一次彻底改造,只需要四个小纪律被稳定执行。
9. A Six-Week Training Plan | 六周训练计划
Techniques only convert into marks when they are practised on a schedule. Six weeks is enough to move a committed writer from the 15 band into the 20-plus band, provided each week has one narrow focus rather than six.
技巧只有在有节奏的训练中才会转化为分数。六周时间足以让一个认真执行的学生从15分档进入20分以上档,前提是每周只聚焦一个窄目标,而不是六个一起抓。
- Week 1 - Genre formats: build one template card per genre and rewrite three past prompts using only the layout. | 第1周:文体格式。每个文体做一张模板卡,只用格式重写三道真题。
- Week 2 - Prompt decoding: take ten prompts, and for each write only the four answers - identity, reader, points, style. | 第2周:审题拆解。取十道题目,每道只写四个答案——身份、读者、要点、语体。
- Week 3 - Structure: plan ten essays with topic sentences only, no full drafts. | 第3周:结构。为十篇作文只列提纲和主题句,不写全文。
- Week 4 - Sentence variety: rewrite five of your own old paragraphs, changing the opening of every sentence. | 第4周:句式。挑五段自己写过的旧段落重写,改变每一句的开头。
