1. Population Growth and Structure |
The population of a country changes due to births, deaths and migration. Natural increase is calculated as the birth rate minus the death rate, usually expressed per 1,000 people per year. When birth rate exceeds death rate, population grows; the reverse leads to decline.
Population structure is shown using a population pyramid, which displays the percentage of males and females in different age groups. A wide base indicates a high birth rate and a young population, while a narrow base suggests a low birth rate and an ageing population. The pyramid also reveals the dependency ratio.
2. Migration |
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. It can be internal (within a country) or international (across borders). Voluntary migration is chosen by the individual, while forced migration occurs when people have no choice, often due to conflict or disaster.
Push factors drive people away from an area: lack of jobs, poor healthcare, natural hazards, war. Pull factors attract them to a new location: better employment, safety, education, and higher living standards. Rural-to-urban migration in many countries is caused by these push-pull forces.
3. Settlement Hierarchy and Patterns |
Settlements can be arranged in a hierarchy according to their size, population and the services they provide. A hamlet has very few services; a village offers basic shops and a school; a town has secondary schools and larger shops; a city provides high-order services such as hospitals and universities.
Settlement patterns describe how buildings are arranged. Linear settlements stretch along a road, river or coast. Nucleated settlements are tightly clustered around a central point such as a market square or crossroads. Dispersed settlements are scattered, typical of rural areas with plenty of farmland.
4. River Processes |
Rivers shape the landscape through three main processes: erosion, transportation and deposition. Erosion wears away the bed and banks. Transportation carries the eroded material downstream. Deposition happens when the river loses energy and drops its load.
Four types of river erosion exist: hydraulic action (the force of water), abrasion or corrasion (rocks rubbing against the bed), attrition (rocks knocking together and becoming smaller) and solution or corrosion (slightly acidic water dissolving rocks). Key transport methods include traction (rolling large stones), saltation (bouncing particles), suspension (fine particles carried in the water) and solution (dissolved material).
5. River Landforms |
Waterfalls form where a band of harder rock lies over softer rock. The softer rock is eroded faster, creating a step. Over time, undercutting forms a plunge pool, and the hard rock may collapse, causing the waterfall to retreat upstream.
Meanders are bends in a river’s course. Erosion occurs on the outer bank where the flow is faster, forming a river cliff, while deposition takes place on the inner bank where the current is slower, creating a slip-off slope. When a meander is cut off, an oxbow lake is formed.
At the river mouth, deposition builds up deltas where the river meets a sea or lake. Deltas are often fertile and densely populated.
6. Coastal Processes |
Coastal landforms are shaped by wave erosion, transport and deposition. Destructive waves have a strong backwash, removing material from the beach, while constructive waves have a stronger swash, depositing material and building up the shore.
Wave erosion operates through hydraulic action, abrasion (rocks thrown against cliffs by waves), attrition and solution. Longshore drift is the main transport process: waves approach the coast at an angle, and sediment is moved along the beach in a zigzag pattern.
7. Coastal Landforms |
Erosion creates headlands and bays where alternating bands of hard and soft rock are found. Soft rock erodes rapidly to form bays, while hard rock resists and juts out as headlands. On headlands, cracks become caves, then arches, and eventually stacks and stumps when the arch collapses.
Depositional features include beaches, spits and bars. A spit is an extended ridge of sand or shingle growing out from the coast due to longshore drift. Its curved end is formed by wave refraction. A bar can form when a spit connects two headlands, blocking off a lagoon.
8. Weather and Climate |
Weather is the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere, including temperature, precipitation, wind and cloud cover. Climate is the average weather pattern of a place taken over a long period, usually 30 years. While weather can change rapidly, climate is more stable and predictable.
Meteorologists use instruments to measure elements of weather. A thermometer records air temperature (in degrees Celsius), a barometer measures atmospheric pressure, a rain gauge collects precipitation (in millimetres), an anemometer registers wind speed, and a wind vane shows wind direction.
9. Climate Zones and Biomes |
The world can be divided into major climate zones based on temperature and precipitation patterns. The tropical zone near the equator is hot year-round; polar zones are very cold. Temperate zones experience moderate temperatures, while deserts are extremely dry. Tropical rainforest climates are hot and wet, savannas have a dry season, Mediterranean climates feature dry summers and mild wet winters.
Each climate zone supports characteristic biomes. Tropical rainforests have dense vegetation with tall trees. Savanna biomes are grasslands with scattered trees. Deserts have sparse vegetation adapted to aridity, like cacti. Temperate deciduous forests lose their leaves in winter, and tundra biomes have low shrubs and mosses in cold regions.
10. Map Skills |
Maps are essential tools in geography. A 4-figure grid reference (e.g., 1754) refers to a whole grid square, while a 6-figure grid reference (e.g., 173541) pinpoints a specific location within that square. Scale shows the relationship between distance on the map and real ground distance: a 1:25,000 scale means 1 cm on the map represents 250 m on the ground.
Contour lines join points of equal height above sea level. Closely packed contours indicate a steep slope; widely spaced contours show a gentle slope. V-shaped contours pointing uphill represent a valley, while V-shaped contours pointing downhill indicate a ridge. Spot heights and triangulation pillars identify exact elevations.
