📚 Year 8 CIE Media Studies: Core Knowledge Review |
Welcome to your core knowledge review for Year 8 CIE Media Studies. This guide breaks down every key concept you need to understand – from media language and representation to audience and institutions. Each section explains ideas in straightforward English, immediately followed by the same explanation in Chinese, so you can build your knowledge confidently in both languages. Let’s get started.
1. Understanding Media Studies |
Media Studies is the subject that explores how media products – such as films, TV shows, adverts, social media posts and newspapers – are created, how they communicate meaning, and how different audiences respond to them. The CIE approach focuses on four key concepts: Media Language, Representation, Audience and Institutions. By studying these, you learn to analyse media texts critically and to appreciate the creative choices behind every image, sound and word.
In Year 8, you are introduced to the basics of each concept so that you can later apply them to exam case studies. Think of this as your media toolkit.
2. Media Language: Camera Shots and Angles |
Every image you see in a film or on TV has been deliberately framed. The distance between the camera and the subject is called a camera shot. An extreme long shot (ELS) shows a wide landscape, often used to establish location. A long shot (LS) shows the full figure. A mid shot (MS) frames a person from the waist up, commonly used for dialogue. A close-up (CU) focuses on a face or object to reveal emotion or detail. An extreme close-up (ECU) zooms in even further, showing only an eye or a written word.
Just as important is camera angle. A high-angle shot looks down on the subject, making them appear small or vulnerable. A low-angle shot looks up, giving the subject power and dominance. An eye-level shot feels neutral and natural. You should practise identifying these techniques and explaining their effect on the audience.
- Common shot types: ELS, LS, MS, CU, ECU (常见镜头类型:极远景、全景、中景、特写、大特写)
- Angle effects: high-angle = weak; low-angle = powerful (角度效果:俯角=弱小;仰角=强大)
3. Media Language: Mise-en-Scène |
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning 'everything placed in the scene'. It includes setting, props, costume, lighting, colour, and the positioning of characters. All these elements work together to tell a story and to create mood. For example, a dark, cluttered room with flickering lights suggests mystery or danger, while a bright, tidy kitchen with pastel colours suggests comfort and safety.
Costume and props give clues about a character's personality, job or era. Make-up can highlight emotions or social status. The way light falls on a subject – high-key or low-key lighting – affects how we feel about them. When you analyse a still image or a film frame, always ask: what details have been chosen, and why?
|---|---|
| Setting & Props 布景与道具 | Where and when is the scene? What objects are visible? |
| Costume & Make-up 服装与化妆 | What does the clothing tell us about status or personality? |
| Lighting & Colour 灯光与色彩 | Is it bright or shadowy? Are colours warm or cold? |
| Character positioning 角色位置 | Who is central? Who is in the background? |
4. Media Language: Editing and Sound |
Editing is the process of selecting and joining shots together to control pace, time and meaning. A fast-cut montage creates excitement; a long, unbroken take builds tension or realism. A transition like a fade to black might suggest an ending or a passage of time. Continuity editing aims to make the action flow smoothly, while a jump cut deliberately disrupts time to make a point.
Sound is equally vital. Diegetic sound comes from inside the story world – dialogue, footsteps, a ringing phone. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience – background music, voiceover narration, sound effects. Sound can create atmosphere, underline a character's emotions, or signal a genre. For example, eerie, high-pitched strings often signal horror.
- Editing terms: pace, cut, transition, continuity, montage (剪辑术语:节奏、切、转场、连贯性、蒙太奇)
- Sound terms: diegetic, non-diegetic, soundtrack, voiceover (声音术语:剧情声、非剧情声、配乐、画外音)
5. Representation: Constructing Reality |
Media texts do not simply reflect the world; they construct a version of reality. This is called representation. Producers select what to show and what to leave out, guide your emotions through framing and editing, and offer a particular point of view. A news report about a protest, for instance, might choose to show angry protestors or peaceful families – each choice shapes the message.
As a media student, your job is to deconstruct representations. Ask: Who or what is being represented? How are they being represented? Who is responsible for the representation, and what might their intentions be? Always consider whether the representation is fair, balanced or biased.
6. Representation: Stereotypes and Diversity |
Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated representations of a group of people. They can be based on gender, age, race, nationality, occupation or social class. While stereotypes can help audiences quickly recognise a character type, they can also reinforce unfair assumptions. For example, a television advert showing only mothers cooking and cleaning reinforces a gender stereotype, while one showing a dad actively parenting challenges it.
Today's media increasingly aim to offer diversity and inclusion. You should be able to spot counter-stereotypes and positive representations that reflect a wider range of human experience. In an exam, discuss not only the stereotype but also the effect on audience attitudes.
7. Audience: Target Audiences and Demographics |
Every media product is made with a particular audience in mind. A target audience can be defined using demographics: age, gender, income, education, occupation and location. For example, a luxury car advert might target high-income professionals aged 35–55, while a cartoon series targets children aged 6–10. Marketers also use psychographics, which group people by interests, values and lifestyle.
You need to know why identifying a target audience is important. It affects every creative decision – from the language used to the choice of music, from the casting to the scheduling of a TV programme. A clear understanding of audience helps producers meet their readers', viewers' or listeners' needs.
8. Audience: Uses and Gratifications Theory |
Why do people choose to watch a horror film, follow a celebrity on Instagram, or read the news every morning? The Uses and Gratifications theory suggests that audiences actively use media to satisfy specific needs. There are four main gratifications: information (learning or keeping informed), personal identity (finding characters or values that reflect your own life), social interaction (feeling connected or having something to talk about) and entertainment (escaping boredom, relaxing).
When analysing a media text, try to identify which gratification it mainly offers. A reality TV show might offer a mix of entertainment and social interaction; a documentary might prioritise information. Applying this theory shows you understand the audience's active role.
9. Media Institutions and Ownership |
Media institutions are the organisations that create and distribute media content. Examples include the BBC, Disney, Netflix, and news corporations like The Guardian. Ownership matters because it can influence what gets produced and what viewpoints are heard. A publicly funded broadcaster like the BBC has a remit to inform, educate and entertain, while a commercial company driven by profit might prioritise mass appeal.
In Year 8, you learn to identify the logos of major institutions and ask simple questions: Who made this? Who owns the company? What does that company want to achieve? This links back to representation and audience.
10. Media Regulation and Ethics |
Media regulation exists to protect audiences, especially children, from harmful or offensive material. In the UK, Ofcom regulates TV, radio and video-on-demand services, while the BBFC classifies films by age rating (U, PG, 12A, 15, 18). Regulation also covers taste and decency, accuracy in news, and privacy. Journalistic ethics, such as those found in the Editors' Code of Practice, guide reporters to be fair and honest.
When studying a media product, consider whether it might have broken any rules. A violent video should not be advertised during a children's TV slot. Understanding regulation helps you think about the responsibilities creators have towards society.
11. Applying Core Concepts to a Media Text |
This is where everything comes together. Take a media text – a film poster, a magazine cover, a short advert. Apply the four key concepts step by step. First, analyse the media language: shot type, mise-en-scène, colour, font. Second, discuss representation: how are people or places presented? Stereotypes? Third, identify the target audience and their likely gratifications. Finally, name the institution behind it and any possible regulatory concerns.
Practise this structure regularly. It will become your go-to formula for essays and exam answers. A strong analysis always supports points with specific evidence from the text – so describe exactly what you see, then explain the effect.
Core analysis sequence: Language → Representation → Audience → Institution
12. Revision Tips and Exam Strategies |
Create a glossary of key media terms with a definition in both English and Chinese. Use flashcards to memorise shot types, sound categories and theory names. When you watch a TV programme or scroll through social media, turn your passive viewing into active analysis: pause and ask yourself the key concept questions. This real-life application helps the ideas stick.
For exams, always read the question carefully. If it asks about representation, stay focused on representation – do not spend half your time describing camera shots unless the question links them to representation. Plan your answers, use correct terminology, and support every point with a concrete example from the media text provided. Time management is essential: allocate about one minute per mark.
