1. Welcome to Year 8 Biology: The Journey Begins | 欢迎来到 Year 8 生物:旅程开始
In Year 8, you will explore how living things are organised from the microscopic level to whole organisms and ecosystems. The CIE Lower Secondary Science curriculum for Stage 8 covers topics such as cell structure and function, the hierarchy of cells-tissues-organs-systems, classification of living things, nutrition and digestion, gas exchange, transport in animals and plants, and the basics of ecology. Practical work is at the heart of each unit, helping you develop skills in using microscopes, conducting investigations and interpreting data.
2. Cells: The Building Blocks of Life | 细胞:生命的构建块
All living organisms are made of cells. A typical animal cell contains a cell membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus. The nucleus controls the cell's activities and houses genetic material in the form of DNA. The cytoplasm is a jelly-like fluid where most chemical reactions take place, and the cell membrane acts as a selective barrier, allowing some substances to pass in and out while keeping others out.
Plant cells share these basic structures but have three additional components that give them unique abilities. A rigid cell wall made of cellulose surrounds the membrane, providing shape and support. Chloroplasts contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which captures light energy for photosynthesis. A large central vacuole stores water, nutrients and waste products, and helps maintain turgor pressure to keep the plant upright.
3. From Cells to Organ Systems |
In multicellular organisms, cells are not isolated units; they work together in organised levels. A group of similar cells performing the same function is called a tissue. For example, muscle tissue is made of long cells that can contract to produce movement. Different tissues combine to form an organ; the stomach is an organ that contains muscular tissue, glandular tissue and epithelial tissue. Organs work together in organ systems, such as the digestive system which includes the mouth, oesophagus, stomach and intestines.
Understanding this hierarchy helps you see how a problem at the cellular level can affect the whole body. In Year 8, you will study several human organ systems in detail and see how they are interdependent. For instance, the oxygen absorbed by the respiratory system is delivered to cells by the circulatory system, while the digestive system supplies the nutrients needed for cellular respiration.
4. Classification of Living Organisms |
Scientists classify organisms into groups to make sense of the incredible diversity of life. The broadest groups are called kingdoms. In Year 8 you will learn about the five-kingdom system: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists and Prokaryotes. Each kingdom is defined by key features such as cell type (prokaryotic or eukaryotic), number of cells, method of nutrition and presence or absence of cell walls.
| Kingdom | Key Features (English) |
|---|---|---|
| Animals | Multicellular, eukaryotic, no cell walls, heterotrophic (consume other organisms). | |
| Plants | Multicellular, eukaryotic, cell walls made of cellulose, autotrophic (photosynthesis). | |
| Fungi | Mostly multicellular, eukaryotic, cell walls of chitin, heterotrophic (absorb nutrients). | |
| Protists | Mostly unicellular, eukaryotic, varied nutrition (some autotrophic, some heterotrophic). | |
| Prokaryotes | Unicellular, prokaryotic (no nucleus), cell wall present (not cellulose). | |
Within the animal kingdom, organisms are further divided into vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) have a backbone, while invertebrates such as insects, arachnids and molluscs lack a backbone. Knowing these groups helps you identify unknown organisms and understand evolutionary relationships.
5. Digestion: Breaking Down Food |
The food you eat contains large, insoluble molecules that your body cannot absorb directly. Digestion is the process that breaks these large molecules into smaller, soluble ones that can pass into the blood. Mechanical digestion begins in the mouth where teeth chew food, while chemical digestion involves enzymes that speed up the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
The main digestive enzymes you will encounter are amylase (breaks down starch into maltose), protease (breaks down proteins into amino acids) and lipase (breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol). Each enzyme works best at a specific pH and temperature. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid, which kills bacteria and provides the acidic environment for protease to function. In the small intestine, bile (produced by the liver) neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats, making lipase's job easier.
Absorption of digested food occurs mainly in the small intestine, whose inner walls are folded and covered with tiny finger-like projections called villi. Villi increase the surface area for absorption, allowing nutrients to move efficiently into the blood. Water and minerals are then absorbed in the large intestine, leaving behind faeces to be egested.
6. Breathing and Gas Exchange |
Breathing (ventilation) is the physical process of moving air into and out of the lungs. The respiratory system includes the nose, trachea, bronchi and lungs. Inside the lungs, the bronchi branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles, which end in clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are surrounded by a dense network of capillaries, where gas exchange takes place.
During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, while the intercostal muscles move the ribs upwards and outwards. This increases the volume of the chest cavity, lowering the pressure inside, so air rushes in. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood, and carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. Gas exchange relies on diffusion – the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
The alveoli are adapted for efficient diffusion: they have very thin walls (one cell thick), a large total surface area, a moist lining and a rich blood supply. Understanding these adaptations is a key part of the Year 8 syllabus and often appears in exam questions.
7. The Circulatory System: Transport Highway |
The circulatory system acts as the body's delivery network. It consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. The heart is a muscular pump divided into four chambers: the right atrium and right ventricle (which pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs), and the left atrium and left ventricle (which pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body). The wall of the left ventricle is thicker because it must generate enough pressure to send blood all around the body.
Three main types of blood vessels carry blood: arteries (carry blood away from the heart under high pressure, have thick, elastic walls), veins (carry blood back to the heart at lower pressure, contain valves to prevent backflow), and capillaries (tiny, thin-walled vessels where substances are exchanged with cells). Blood consists of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which binds to oxygen for transport. White blood cells defend against pathogens, and platelets help blood clot at wounds.
8. Plants: Photosynthesis and Water Transport |
Plants are producers – , using light energy absorbed by chlorophyll. In chemical symbols, it is often written as:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Glucose produced during photosynthesis is used by plants for respiration to release energy, converted into starch for storage, or turned into cellulose for building cell walls. Plants also need mineral ions, especially nitrates for making proteins and magnesium for making chlorophyll. These are absorbed from the soil by root hairs.
Water and dissolved minerals are transported upwards from the roots to the leaves through xylem vessels. Xylem cells are dead and hollow, forming continuous tubes. The movement of water is partly driven by transpiration – the evaporation of water from the leaf surface. The sugar produced in the leaves is transported to other parts of the plant through phloem tubes. This two-way transport system ensures all cells receive what they need.
