Carbohydrates provide the main source of energy. Proteins are needed for growth and repair of tissues. Lipids supply a concentrated energy source and help with insulation and cell membrane structure.
Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts for various functions, e.g. vitamin C for immune health, calcium for bones. Deficiency diseases arise when a nutrient is lacking, such as scurvy from lack of vitamin C.
6. The Human Digestive System |
Digestion breaks down large insoluble food molecules into small soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. Mechanical digestion (e.g. chewing, stomach churning) increases surface area, while chemical digestion uses enzymes.
Key organs include the mouth (salivary amylase starts starch breakdown), oesophagus, stomach (acid and proteases), small intestine (major site of digestion and absorption) and large intestine (water absorption).
The small intestine contains villi which increase the surface area for absorption. Digested products such as glucose and amino acids are then transported by the blood to cells throughout the body.
7. The Circulatory System |
The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. It transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste products around the body. The heart is a double pump with four chambers: two atria and two ventricles.

Decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break down dead matter, recycling nutrients back into the soil. Energy is lost at each trophic level, so food chains rarely have more than five levels.
Feeding relationships can be displayed in food webs, which are networks of interconnected food chains. Changes in one population can affect many others in the web.
