1. The Particle Model of Matter |
All substances are made up of tiny, moving particles. The arrangement and movement of these particles determine the state of matter. In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and can only vibrate around fixed positions. In liquids, particles are still close together but can slide past one another, allowing liquids to flow. In gases, particles are far apart, moving rapidly in all directions.
The particle model also explains diffusion – the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Diffusion occurs fastest in gases, slowly in liquids, and not at all in solids because particles cannot change position easily.
2. States of Matter and Changes of State | 物质状态及其变化
Matter can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas. Changing between these states involves energy transfer, but the temperature stays constant during the change itself. Melting (solid to liquid) and boiling (liquid to gas) require heat energy to overcome attractive forces. Freezing (liquid to solid) and condensation (gas to liquid) release energy to the surroundings.
Sublimation is when a solid turns directly into a gas without passing through the liquid state, like solid carbon dioxide (dry ice). Deposition is the reverse – a gas turns directly into a solid, such as the formation of frost on a cold morning.
3. Atoms and Elements |
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains its chemical properties. Each element is made up of only one type of atom. Elements are listed in the Periodic Table, where each has a unique symbol (often one or two letters) and an atomic number that tells us how many protons are in the nucleus.
Atoms themselves are made of subatomic particles: protons (positive charge), neutrons (neutral), and electrons (negative charge). Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus, while electrons orbit around the nucleus in shells. For a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons.
4. Compounds and Mixtures |
A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements chemically bond together. The properties of a compound are entirely different from those of its constituent elements. For example, sodium (a reactive metal) and chlorine (a poisonous gas) combine to form sodium chloride – harmless table salt.
A mixture, on the other hand, contains different substances that are not chemically combined. Each substance keeps its own properties and can be separated by physical methods. Air is a mixture of gases; soil is a mixture of minerals, organic matter, water, and air.
5. Chemical Formulae and Equations |
A chemical formula uses symbols and subscript numbers to show the types and ratios of atoms in a compound. For instance, H₂O means two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom, and CO₂ represents one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. The subscript numbers are written using small characters: H₂O, CO₂.
word equation describes a chemical reaction using the names of the reactants and products: 'Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium oxide' re often added: (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas, and (aq) for aqueous solution.
6. Physical and Chemical Changes |
In a physical change, no new substance is formed. The change is usually reversible, and only the appearance or state of the material alters. Examples include melting ice, tearing paper, or dissolving sugar in water. The original substance can be recovered easily.
In a chemical change (a chemical reaction), one or more new substances are formed. Evidence of a chemical reaction might include a colour change, gas production (bubbles), formation of a precipitate (solid), or an energy change (heat, light, or sound). Burning wood, rusting iron, and cooking an egg are all chemical changes.
7. Acids, Alkalis and Indicators |
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. They have a sour taste (though never taste in a lab!) and turn blue litmus paper red. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), and nitric acid (HNO₃).
y feel soapy and turn red litmus paper blue. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) are typical alkalis. The pH scale (0– eutral, pH > 7 is alkaline. Universal indicator shows a range of colours across the pH scale.
Neutralisation occurs when an acid and an alkali react to form a salt and water. This is an important reaction both in the lab and in everyday life, such as treating indigestion with an antacid or adding lime to acidic soil.
8. Separating Mixtures |
Several physical separation techniques rely on differences in physical properties. Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid, like sand from water. The mixture is poured through filter paper; the solid stays as residue, and the liquid passes through as filtrate.
Evaporation and crystallisation are used to obtain a soluble solid from a solution. Heating the solution evaporates the solvent, leaving the solid behind. Careful cooling can form pure crystals. Distillation separates a solvent from a solution by boiling and condensing the vapour – useful for obtaining pure water from saltwater.
Paper chromatography separates dissolved substances, such as the different coloured inks in a pen. A spot of the mixture is placed on paper, and a solvent soaks up the paper, carrying the components at different speeds. This technique can identify substances by their Rf values.
9. Metals and Non-metals |
Metals are typically shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable (can be hammered into sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into wires). Most metals are solid at room temperature, except mercury, which is liquid. Non-metals are usually dull, brittle, and poor conductors; many are gases at room temperature.
Metals react with oxygen, water, and acids at different rates. The reactivity series ranks metals from most reactive to least reactive. For example, potassium and sodium are very reactive, while gold and platinum are very unreactive. Carbon is a non-metal that can be used to extract some metals from their oxides by a reduction reaction.
10. Earth’s Resources and Environmental Chemistry |
The Earth’s atmosphere is composed mainly of nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%), with small amounts of argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, release extra carbon dioxide, contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming.
Acid rain forms when sulfur dioxide (from burning fossil fuels) and nitrogen oxides (from vehicle exhausts) dissolve in rainwater, producing sulfuric and nitric acids. This rain damages buildings, forests, and aquatic ecosystems. Pollution can be reduced by using cleaner fuels, catalytic converters, and renewable energy sources.
The rock cycle and the extraction of metals from ores highlight the importance of Earth’s finite resources. Recycling metals saves energy and reduces the need for mining. Chemistry helps us understand how to protect our environment while meeting human needs.
