Welcome to your Year 8 CIE Sociology quick reference! Unlike maths or physics, sociology does not have traditional formulas, but it offers powerful theories and models that act like 'formulas' for understanding how society works. This handbook packs the core perspectives, key thinkers and sociological 'theorems' you need to revise into one handy guide.
1. The Three Main Sociological Perspectives |
Functionalism compares society to a living organism: each institution (family, education, religion) performs a function that maintains stability and order. When one part fails, the whole system suffers — just like a body fighting an infection.
Conflict theory, inspired by Karl Marx, sees society as a constant struggle between groups with unequal power and resources. The ruling class (bourgeoisie) owns the means of production, while the working class (proletariat) is exploited, creating class conflict.
Symbolic interactionism zooms in on everyday face-to-face interactions. It argues that society is built through shared symbols and meanings — a handshake, a wave or a school badge are all symbols that people interpret to form their social reality.
| Perspective | Key Idea |
|---|---|---|
| Functionalism | Society works like an organism; each part has a function. | |
| Conflict Theory | Society is a competition over scarce resources; power shapes inequality. | |
| Symbolic Interactionism | People act based on the meanings they assign to things; reality is socially constructed. | |
Functionalism 'formula': Social stability = Σ (functioning institutions) + consensus
2. Socialisation and the Self |
Primary socialisation takes place in the family during early childhood, where we learn basic norms, language and values. Secondary socialisation continues through school, peer groups and media, shaping our identity beyond the home.
Charles Cooley's 'looking-glass self' suggests we develop our self-image by imagining how others see us. If we think people see us as clever, we start to see ourselves as clever — our self is reflected back like a mirror.
George Herbert Mead divided the self into the 'I' (the spontaneous, creative self) and the 'me' (the socialised self, aware of society's expectations). Through role-taking, we learn to see ourselves from the perspective of the 'generalised other'.
Socialisation 'theorem': Self = I + Me → Generalised Other
3. Culture, Norms and Values |
Culture consists of all the shared products of a society: material culture (buildings, technology, clothing) and non-material culture (beliefs, language, values). It provides a 'toolkit' for how to behave in that society.
Norms are the unwritten rules of behaviour (e.g. queuing, saying 'thank you'), while values are the deep principles a society sees as important (e.g. honesty, freedom). When norms are codified into written rules, they become laws.
Social control refers to how societies manage people's behaviour. Formal social control uses written laws and official sanctions (fines, imprisonment), whereas informal social control relies on approval or disapproval from family and peers.
Culture equation: Culture = Material elements + Non-material elements
4. Social Stratification Models |
Social stratification is the way society is divided into layers (strata) based on factors like wealth, power and prestige. The three main historical systems are slavery, caste and class.
Karl Marx simplified stratification into two great classes: the bourgeoisie (owners of factories, land, capital) and the proletariat (workers who sell their labour). He predicted the proletariat would eventually overthrow the bourgeoisie.
Max Weber argued that stratification is more complex and has three dimensions: class (economic position), status (social honour or prestige) and party (political power). An individual can be high in one dimension but low in another.
Weber’s stratification 'formula': Stratification = Class + Status + Party
5. Family Forms and Functions |
A nuclear family consists of two parents and their children living together; an extended family includes additional relatives such as grandparents, aunts and uncles. Different cultures favour different family structures.
Functionalists identify four key functions of the family: sexual regulation (providing stable adult relationships), reproduction (producing the next generation), socialisation (teaching children norms) and economic security (providing food and shelter).
Critics, like feminist sociologists, argue that the family can also reproduce gender inequalities, as women often perform more unpaid domestic labour. The family is therefore a site of both care and potential conflict.
Family function model: Family = Care + Socialisation + Economic support + Reproduction
6. Education and Social Mobility |
Education serves several functions in society: it transmits knowledge and skills (human capital), promotes social integration by creating shared experiences, and sifts and sorts students for future job roles — a process called role allocation.
Conflict theorists point out that education can reproduce inequality. Middle-class children often have more cultural capital (knowledge, language codes, habits) that schools value, giving them an advantage over working-class peers.
Social mobility describes the movement of individuals or groups between different social positions. Education is often seen as the main engine of upward mobility, but meritocracy — the idea that success depends only on ability and effort — is challenged by persistent class gaps.
Educational inequality 'formula': Achievement = Ability + (Economic capital + Cultural capital + Social capital)
7. Theories of Crime and Deviance |
Deviance is any behaviour that violates social norms, while crime is behaviour that breaks formal laws. Not all deviance is criminal (e.g. wearing unusual clothes), and not all crimes are equally deviant in all groups.
Differential association theory (Sutherland) suggests that criminal behaviour is learned through interaction with intimate groups. If a person is exposed to more definitions favourable to law-breaking than to law-abiding, they may become deviant.
Labelling theory argues that deviance is not in the act itself, but in how society reacts to it. When a person is publicly labelled as 'criminal' or 'troublemaker', they may internalise that label and continue the deviant behaviour — a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Merton's strain theory explains deviance as a gap between culturally approved goals (e.g. wealth) and the legitimate means to achieve them. When the goal remains but means are blocked, individuals may innovate — turn to crime.
Deviance equation: Deviance = Behaviour – Socially accepted norms
8. Sociological Research Methods |
Sociologists use quantitative methods (surveys, official statistics) to measure patterns and correlations across large populations. These methods produce numerical data that can be easily compared.
Qualitative methods (participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus groups) explore meanings, experiences and feelings. They give rich, detailed data but are harder to generalise.
Ethical issues are central: researchers must obtain informed consent, protect participants' confidentiality, avoid harm and be honest about the purpose of the study. Deception should be minimised.
Research process 'formula': Research = Research question + Method + Analysis + Ethics
9. Media, Stereotypes and Influence |
The mass media — TV, social media, newspapers, radio — do not simply reflect reality; they actively construct it through selective reporting, framing and agenda-setting. The stories they choose to cover shape what the public sees as important.
Stereotypes are oversimplified, generalised images of a group. Media stereotypes based on gender, race, age or class can reinforce prejudice and limit how people see themselves and others.
The hypodermic syringe model suggests the media injects messages directly into passive audiences. However, modern theories argue that audiences are active: they interpret and filter messages based on their own backgrounds (uses and gratifications theory).
Media influence 'formula': Influence = Agenda-setting × Framing × Audience interpretation
10. Social Change and Globalisation |
Social change refers to significant shifts in the structure of society. It can be driven by technology (the internet), ideas (human rights), conflict (revolutions) or demographic changes (ageing populations).
Globalisation is the increasing interconnectedness of the world through flows of goods, money, people and culture. A smartphone designed in California, assembled in China and used in Brazil is a symbol of globalised production.
Globalisation creates both opportunities (access to diverse cultures, faster spread of innovations) and challenges (cultural homogenisation, job displacement, environmental strain). Sociologists debate whether globalisation creates a 'global village' or deeper inequalities.
Social change theorem: Change = Technology + Ideas + Conflict + Demography
