1. Media Text |
A media text is any product created to communicate meaning to an audience. This includes television programmes, films, newspapers, magazines, video games, social media posts, advertisements and websites. A media text can be a single image, a sequence of frames or an interactive experience. In OCR Media Studies, you examine how every media text is 'constructed' using specific choices, and that nothing in a media product appears by accident. Words, colours, camera angles, sound effects and even the absence of an element all carry meaning.
2. Genre | 体裁
Genre refers to a category or type of media text that shares familiar conventions. Action films, sitcoms, fantasy novels and dance music are all genres. Genres provide audiences with expectations about narrative, character types, visual style and soundtrack. However, OCR encourages you to see genre not as a rigid box but as a flexible set of 'rules' that producers can follow, mix or subvert. A media text often combines codes from several genres – think of a comedy horror or a sci-fi romance – which is called hybrid genre.
3. Narrative | 叙事
Narrative is the way a story is told – the chain of events and how they are organised to create meaning for an audience. Classical narratives often follow a linear structure with equilibrium, disruption, climax and resolution. Many media texts use open narratives, such as soap operas that run indefinitely, or closed narratives that reach a clear conclusion. You will also encounter non-linear narratives that flash backwards and forwards in time. Enigma codes, or puzzles that keep the audience asking questions, are a key tool to drive a story forward.
4. Representation | 再现
Representation describes how media texts portray people, places, events and ideas. It is never a simple mirror of reality; every representation is constructed through selection, emphasis and omission. OCR expects you to ask: who is being represented, by whom, and for what purpose? Stereotypes are simplified, often repeated representations that can reinforce assumptions about gender, ethnicity, age or social class. Countertypes challenge these narrow images, while positive or negative portrayals can shape audiences' perceptions in powerful ways.
5. Audience | 受众
Audience refers to the individuals or groups who consume a media text. OCR teaches you to move beyond the idea of a passive audience that simply absorbs messages. Instead, audiences are active – they interpret texts differently based on their own backgrounds, beliefs and experiences. Key audience categories include mass audience (a large, general group) and niche audience (a smaller, more specific group). Demographics divide audiences by age, gender, income and education, while psychographics group them by attitudes, values and lifestyles.
6. Institution | 机构
In media studies, an institution is the organisation behind the creation and distribution of a media text. This can be a large corporation like the BBC or Disney, a small independent production company, or even an individual creator on YouTube. Institutions influence content through funding, editorial policies, regulation and brand identity. The concept of the 'public service broadcaster' is particularly important in the UK context, highlighting an obligation to inform, educate and entertain, rather than just pursue profit.
7. Media Language: Technical Codes |
Technical codes are the tools used to construct a media text from a craft perspective. In film and television, these include camera shots (close-up, long shot, high-angle), camera movements (pan, tilt, track), editing (cut, fade, montage), lighting (high-key, low-key, backlighting) and sound. For print media, layout, typography and use of colour are key technical choices. Every technical decision contributes to the mood, focus and meaning of the sequence or page, so always ask what effect a technique creates rather than simply naming it.
8. Symbolic Codes |
Symbolic codes communicate meaning through what we see within the frame. These include mise-en-scène – a French term meaning everything placed in front of the camera – such as setting, costume, props, colour palette and body language. For example, a character dressed in dark, angular clothing standing in a shadowy alley immediately suggests danger or mystery. Colours carry cultural associations: red can signal passion or danger, while blue often connotes calm or sadness. Symbolic codes work together to build a rich layer of visual meaning.
9. Audio Codes |
Audio codes shape how audiences feel and interpret what they are watching or playing. Diegetic sound exists within the world of the text – characters can hear it – such as dialogue, footsteps or a radio playing a song. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world, like background music (underscore), voice-over narration or added sound effects that only the audience hears. Sound bridges, where audio from one scene carries into the next, smooth transitions. Contrapuntal sound deliberately clashes with the image to create unease or irony.
10. Convergence and Interactivity |
Media convergence describes how previously separate platforms, technologies and industries come together. A smartphone exemplifies convergence: it is a phone, camera, games console, music player and television all in one device. For OCR, this links closely to interactivity, where audiences no longer simply watch or read but actively participate – by voting on a TV talent show, sharing a news article, or co-creating content on social media. Transmedia storytelling, where one narrative unfolds across multiple platforms (film, game, comic), is a direct result of this convergence culture.
11. Mediation and Selection |
Mediation is the process through which a media text is constructed. No media message reaches an audience unprocessed: someone has selected what to show, how to frame it and what to leave out. Think of a news bulletin – hours of footage are distilled into a two-minute report. Gatekeeping, agenda-setting and framing are all acts of mediation. Recognising mediation reminds you that 'the media' does not simply record reality; it actively selects, shapes and packages it for our attention. This is one of the most powerful ideas in your Year 8 course.
12. Regulation and Classification |
Media regulation refers to the rules and bodies that oversee media content. In the UK, Ofcom regulates television, radio and video-on-demand services to protect audiences, especially children. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) assigns age ratings like U, PG, 12A and 15 to films. Video games are rated by PEGI (Pan European Game Information). Regulation balances freedom of expression with the need to shield vulnerable viewers from harmful material. As a student, understanding regulation helps you evaluate why certain content warnings or age restrictions exist.
