1. Map Skills and Coordinates |
Map skills are foundational to geography. They allow us to locate places, navigate landscapes and interpret spatial patterns. Understanding scale, symbols, grid references and contour lines transforms a simple drawing into a powerful tool. Compass directions (north, south, east, west and the intermediate points) provide orientation, while keys explain the meaning of colours and icons.
Scale expresses the relationship between a distance on a map and the actual distance on the ground. A scale of 1:50 000 means that 1 cm on the map represents 50 000 cm (0.5 km) in reality. Large-scale maps show small areas in great detail, while small-scale maps cover large regions with less detail.
Grid references pinpoint exact locations. Four-figure references (e.g. 1834) identify a 1 km by 1 km square. Six-figure references (e.g. 186347) locate a point within a 100 m by 100 m area, making them vital for field sketches and navigation.
Latitude and longitude create a global coordinate system. The Equator (0° latitude) divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, while the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) splits the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. Lines of latitude run parallel, but longitude lines converge at the poles.
Contour lines join points of equal elevation above sea level. Widely spaced contours indicate gentle slopes, while closely spaced contours signify steep ground. Concentric circles of contours often represent hills or depressions. Spot heights and triangulation pillars give exact altitudes.
2. Weather and Climate |
Weather describes the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere in terms of temperature, precipitation, wind speed and humidity. Climate, on the other hand, is the long-term average of weather patterns in a location, typically calculated over a 30-year period. Knowing the difference helps us understand seasonal changes versus overall trends.
The world can be divided into three major climate zones. Tropical climates, near the Equator, are hot and often receive heavy rainfall. Temperate climates, in mid-latitudes, have milder temperatures and distinct seasons. Polar climates, near the poles, remain very cold throughout the year with limited precipitation.
Rainfall can be triggered by three main mechanisms. Relief rainfall occurs when moist air is forced to rise over a mountain barrier, cooling and condensing. Convectional rainfall results from heated ground warming the air above, causing it to rise and form cumulonimbus clouds. Frontal rainfall happens when two air masses of different temperatures meet, and the warmer, lighter air is forced to rise over the denser cold air.
To analyse climate data, we often calculate the annual temperature range. This is the difference between the warmest and the coldest monthly mean temperatures.
Temperature Range = Tₘₐₓ − Tₘᵢₙ
If the warmest month averages 28 °C and the coldest month averages 12 °C, the annual range is 16 °C.
3. Population and Migration |
Population distribution describes the pattern of where people live. Factors influencing distribution include climate, availability of water, fertile soil, job opportunities and accessibility. Densely populated areas such as coastal plains contrast with sparsely populated regions like deserts or high mountains.
Population density measures how crowded a place is. It is calculated by dividing the total population by the total land area.
Population Density = Total Population ÷ Area (km²)
A city with 500 000 people living in 200 km² has a density of 2 500 people per km².
A population pyramid is a bar chart showing the age and sex structure of a country. Countries with high birth rates have a wide base that narrows quickly upwards, indicating a youthful population and high death rate. Countries with low birth and death rates show a more column-like shape, reflecting an ageing population.
Migration refers to the movement of people from one place to another. Push factors encourage people to leave an area (e.g. unemployment, war, natural disasters), while pull factors attract them to a new location (e.g. job prospects, safety, better services). Rural-to-urban migration is a common pattern in developing countries as people search for a higher standard of living.
4. Urbanisation | 城市化
Urbanisation is the process by which an increasing percentage of a country's population lives in towns and cities. It is driven by rural-to-urban migration and natural population increase. The growth of manufacturing, services and technology accelerates urbanisation.
Million cities and megacities (over 10 million inhabitants) are becoming more common, especially in Asia and Africa. Rapid urban growth can create problems such as traffic congestion, air pollution, inadequate housing, and the growth of informal settlements or slums.
City structure can be described using models like the Burgess concentric zone model. At the centre is the Central Business District (CBD) with commerce and offices. Transition zones surround the CBD, often with older industries and housing, followed by inner suburbs and outer commuter zones. Green belts may limit urban sprawl.
Sustainable urban living aims to reduce a city's environmental footprint. Strategies include efficient public transport, renewable energy, recycling systems and brownfield site redevelopment. A green city with parks and green roofs helps absorb rainfall and cool urban heat islands.
5. Rivers and Landscapes |
Rivers shape the landscape through erosion, transportation and deposition. Hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution are the main erosion processes. Vertical erosion deepens the river channel in the upper course, while lateral erosion widens the valley in the middle and lower courses.
In the upper course, steep gradients and high energy lead to features such as V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs and waterfalls. A waterfall forms where a band of hard resistant rock overlies softer rock; the softer rock is eroded more quickly, creating an undercut that eventually collapses, and the waterfall retreats upstream.
Meanders are winding bends that develop in the middle course. Erosion on the outer bank forms a river cliff, while deposition on the inner bank builds a slip-off slope. Over time, meanders can become exaggerated, and if the neck is cut through in a flood, an oxbow lake is left behind.
At the river mouth, when the energy drops, deposition dominates and may create deltas. A delta is a flat, fan-shaped area of sediment where the river enters a slower-moving body of water. Rich alluvial soils often make deltas important agricultural regions.
6. Coastal Landforms |
Waves are the main agents of erosion and deposition along coastlines. Destructive waves have a strong backwash that removes beach material, while constructive waves build up beaches with a strong swash. The shape of the coastline is constantly changing through these processes.
Coastal erosion creates spectacular landforms. Headlands are eroded by waves attacking weak points like joints, forming sea caves. When a cave erodes through a headland, it becomes an arch. Further collapse leaves a stack, a steep-sided pillar of rock separated from the cliff.
Depositional features include beaches, spits and bars. Longshore drift moves sand and shingle along the coast in a zigzag pattern. When the coastline changes direction, sediment may be deposited to form a spit, a narrow ridge of sand extending into the sea. A bay bar can form when a spit links two headlands, cutting off a lagoon.
Coastal management strategies aim to reduce erosion and flooding. Hard engineering includes sea walls, groynes and rock armour, while soft engineering uses beach nourishment, dune regeneration and managed retreat. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost and environmental impact.
