1. What is Economics? |
Economics is a social science that examines how people make choices under conditions of scarcity. It explores the behaviour of individuals, firms, and governments when they use limited resources to produce goods and services that satisfy human wants.
The subject revolves around the idea that resources such as land, labour, and capital are finite, whereas human desires for goods and services are virtually infinite.
At the Year 8 level, you will begin to understand basic economic terminology and learn to think like an economist by analysing trade-offs and the consequences of decisions.
2. The Basic Economic Problem |
The fundamental economic problem arises because resources are limited while wants are unlimited. This forces every society to answer three key questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?
'What to produce?' refers to deciding which goods and services best satisfy the needs and wants of the population. 'How to produce?' concerns the methods and combination of resources used in production. 'For whom to produce?' addresses the distribution of output among different groups in society.
These questions are timeless and apply to all economic systems, from primitive barter economies to advanced capitalist nations.
3. Scarcity and Choice |
Scarcity means that the availability of resources is insufficient to satisfy all the desires of people. Because of scarcity, individuals and societies must make choices. When you choose one option, you forgo another.
For example, a student might have two hours of free time and must decide between studying economics or playing video games. The scarcity of time forces a choice.
Scarcity is not the same as a shortage. A shortage is temporary and can be resolved, whereas scarcity is a permanent condition because our wants will always exceed available resources.
4. Opportunity Cost |
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that is sacrificed when a choice is made. It is a central concept in economics because it captures the true cost of any decision—not just the monetary cost, but what you give up.
Opportunity Cost = Value of Next Best Alternative Foregone
For instance, if a government spends more on defence, the opportunity cost might be fewer resources allocated to healthcare or education. For individuals, choosing to attend a concert may mean sacrificing the earnings from a part-time job.
Understanding opportunity cost helps you evaluate the true consequences of your choices in everyday life and in policy-making.
5. Factors of Production |
Factors of production are the inputs used to produce goods and services. They are traditionally grouped into four categories: land, labour, capital, and entrepreneurship.
Land includes all natural resources such as forests, minerals, water, and fertile soil. Labour refers to the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. Capital comprises man-made assets like machinery, tools, and buildings that aid production. Entrepreneurship is the ability to combine the other factors and take risks to innovate and drive economic activity.
The typical rewards for each factor are set out in the table below.
| Factor | Reward | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Land | Rent | Farmland, oil reserves |
| Labour | Wages | Teachers, factory workers |
| Capital | Interest | Machinery, computers |
| Entrepreneurship | Profit | 广告 / Sponsored AS & A Level Economics Exam Preparation and Practice 剑桥国际AS…
