1. Speed | 速度

Speed tells us how fast an object is moving. Average speed is found by dividing the total distance travelled by the total time taken. If an object covers 100 m in 10 s, its speed is 10 m/s.

average speed = total distance / total time

The SI unit of speed is metres per second (m/s). Distance is measured in metres (m) and time in seconds (s). In everyday life, speed is also given in kilometres per hour (km/h).

Always check that the units match. To convert m/s to km/h, multiply by 3.6. For constant speed, the same formula applies directly.

2. Density | 密度

Density measures how tightly matter is packed into a substance. A material with high density has more mass in a given volume. It is a property that helps identify materials.

density = mass / volume

Mass is recorded in kilograms (kg) or grams (g), volume in cubic metres (m³) or cubic centimetres (cm³). The standard unit is kg/m³, but g/cm³ is also common. The density of pure water is 1.0 g/cm³ or 1000 kg/m³.

To find the density of an irregular solid, measure its mass on a balance and its volume by displacement in a measuring cylinder, then apply the formula.

3. Pressure | 压强

Pressure describes how concentrated a force is over an area. A sharp knife cuts easily because it concentrates the force onto a tiny area, producing high pressure.

pressure = force / area

ascal (Pa), where 1 Pa = 1 N/m². Larger forces over smaller areas create larger pressures.

This formula explains why boots with wide soles prevent sinking into soft ground: they spread the weight over a larger area, reducing pressure.

4. Moment of a Force | 力矩

A moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot. It depends on two factors: the size of the force and the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force.

moment = force × perpendicular distance from pivot

Moment is measured in newton metres (N m). To increase the turning effect, you can either apply a larger force or increase the distance from the pivot. A spanner with a long handle makes it easier to turn a nut.

In equilibrium, the total clockwise moment equals the total anticlockwise moment. This principle is used to solve problems with levers and see-saws.

5. Hooke's Law |

Hooke's Law describes the behaviour of springs and many elastic materials. It states that the extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded.

F ∝ x (within the elastic limit)

re k is the spring constant. If too much force is applied, the spring deforms permanently.

A force-extension graph gives a straight line through the origin up to the limit of proportionality. The steeper the line, the stiffer the spring.

6. Work | 功

Work is done whenever a force moves an object in the direction of the force. Energy is transferred when work is done. If you push a box 3 m with a force of 5 N, you do 15 J of work.

work = force × distance (moved in the direction of the force)

The unit of work is the joule (J). One joule is equal to one newton metre. No work is done if there is no movement, or if the movement is perpendicular to the force.

Work is a scalar quantity; it does not depend on direction but on the path taken in the direction of the force.

7. Power | 功率

Power measures how quickly work is done or how fast energy is transferred. A powerful machine does the same work in less time.

power = work done / time taken

ergy transferred / time. Power is measured in watts (W). One watt is one joule per second.

For example, a 60 W lamp transfers 60 J of electrical energy into light and heat every second. High-power appliances include kettles and heaters, often quoted in kilowatts (kW).

8. Conservation of Energy and Efficiency |

The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred from one store to another or transformed from one form to another. The total energy in a closed system remains constant.

Efficiency measures how well a device converts input energy into useful output energy. No machine is 100% efficient because some energy is always dissipated as heat to the surroundings.

efficiency = (useful output energy / total input energy) × 100%

b that gives 10 J of light for 50 J of electrical input has an efficiency of (10/50) × 100% = 20%.

9. Electric Current and Charge |

Electric current is a flow of electric charge. In a metal wire, the charge is carried by moving electrons. The size of the current depends on the amount of charge passing a point each second.

current = charge / time (I = Q / t)

Current is measured in amperes (A), charge in coulombs (C), and time in seconds (s). An ammeter connected in series measures current. A current of 1 A means 1 C of charge flows past a point per second.

arranged: Q = I × t. This is useful for calculating how much charge flows in a given time.

10. Voltage, Resistance and Ohm's Law |

Voltage (potential difference) is the energy transferred per unit charge. It tells us how much energy is given to or taken from each coulomb of charge as it moves through a component.

voltage = energy / charge (V = E / Q)

Voltage is measured in volts (V). Resistance opposes the flow of current. Ohm's Law relates voltage, current and resistance in a simple way for many conductors at constant temperature.

resistance = voltage / current (R = V / I)

Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω). The law is only true if the temperature stays constant. Some components, like a filament lamp, do not follow Ohm's Law because their resistance increases with temperature.

11. Resistors in Series |

When resistors are connected end-to-end, the same current passes through each one. The total (or equivalent) resistance is simply the sum of all individual resistances.

Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + ...

For example, if a 2 Ω resistor, a 3 Ω resistor and a 5 Ω resistor are placed in series, the total resistance is 10 Ω. Adding more resistors in series always increases the total resistance.

This rule is used to design circuits that need a specific resistance value. The current drawn from the power supply decreases as total resistance increases.

12. Wave Speed and the Law of Reflection |

A wave transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. The speed of a wave depends on the medium. It links frequency and wavelength through one simple equation.

wave speed = frequency × wavelength (v = f λ)

Wave speed is in metres per second (m/s), frequency in hertz (Hz), and wavelength in metres (m). Frequency is the number of complete waves passing a point per second.

When a wave strikes a smooth barrier, it obeys the law of reflection:

angle of incidence = angle of reflection (i = r)

Both angles are measured between the ray direction and the normal line at right angles to the surface. This law applies to light, sound and water waves in ray diagrams.

Knowing this equation and law helps predict the path of waves in mirrors, echoes and other reflections.
