1. Denotation and Connotation |

Denotation is the literal, dictionary meaning of a word, image or object. For example, a picture of a rose simply denotes a flower with petals and thorns.

Connotation is the deeper, emotional or cultural association linked to that same thing. The rose connotes love, romance or even secrecy.

Memory aid: Denotation = Dictionary definition (both start with 'D'). Connotation = Connection (they share the 'con' sound and both refer to linked feelings).

2. Camera Shots and Angles |

An extreme long shot (ELS) shows a very wide view, often to establish a location. A long shot (LS) shows the full figure of a person from a distance.

A medium shot (MS) frames a person from the waist up, commonly used for conversations. A close-up (CU) focuses sharply on a face, highlighting emotion.

An extreme close-up (ECU) zooms right in on a detail, like an eye or a key object. A high angle shot looks down on the subject, making it appear weak or vulnerable. A low angle shot looks up, making the subject seem powerful.

Quick trick: Imagine you are holding a camera. The closer you get, the more emotion you capture. Think 'High = Helpless', 'Low = Leader'.

3. Mise-en-Scène |

Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning 'placed in the scene'. It includes everything you can see within the frame: set design, props, costume, lighting, colour and actor positioning.

For instance, a dark alley with a flickering lamp creates a threatening atmosphere; a bright, tidy classroom suggests order and safety. Costume instantly signals a character's personality or social status.

Memory hack: Picture the word 'scene' inside 'mise-en-scène'. Ask yourself: "What has the director placed in this scene to tell the story?"

4. Sound and Music |

Diegetic sound is any noise that exists within the film's world and can be heard by the characters, such as dialogue, footsteps or a car horn. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience only, like background music or a narrator's voice.

Sound effects (SFX) are artificial sounds used to enhance action. A soundtrack is the collection of music used in a film or game. Sound bridges smooth the transition between scenes by carrying sound over the cut.

Remember: Diegetic = In the story (the 'D' can stand for 'drama world'). Non-diegetic = Not in the story.

5. Editing Techniques |

A cut is the most basic edit – simply one shot instantly changing to another. A fade-out gradually darkens to black; a fade-in does the opposite. A dissolve blends one shot into the next, often showing time passing.

A jump cut is a sudden, jarring shift in time or position, catching the viewer's attention. A match cut links two shots by a similar shape, colour or action, creating a visual connection.

Continuity editing aims to make the sequence feel smooth and natural, so viewers barely notice the cuts. Cross-cutting (parallel editing) cuts back and forth between two or more events happening at the same time.

Memory tip: Start with 'C' words: Cut, Continuity, Cross-cut. Jump cuts 'jump' out at you. Dissolve feels like one image 'dissolving' into another.

记忆提示:从C开头的词入手:Cut(剪切)、Continuity(连贯)、Cross-cut(交叉剪辑)。

6. Narrative and Genre |

Narrative is simply the way a story is told. Most media texts follow a three-act structure: beginning (setup), middle (conflict) and end (resolution). Enigma codes are questions or mysteries that keep audiences hooked.

Genre categorises media texts by shared conventions. For example, a horror genre typically uses dark lighting, jump scares and isolated settings. A romantic comedy (rom-com) follows a lighter, humorous formula.

Hybrid genre mixes two or more genres, like a sci-fi horror film. A sub-genre is a smaller, more specific category within a genre, such as 'zombie horror'.

Mnemonics: Narrative = the nagging 'what happens next?' force. Genre = 'general recipe' of a film type.

7. Representation and Stereotypes |

Representation is how media texts show people, places, events and ideas. Everything is a 're-presentation' of reality, shaped by the producer's choices.

A stereotype is a simplified, often exaggerated portrayal of a group of people, based on characteristics like gender, age, ethnicity or occupation. For example, the 'absent-minded professor' is a common stereotype.

Meanwhile, a counter-stereotype deliberately breaks those expectations, showing a character that goes against the norm, like a sensitive male nurse or a fearless young boy.

Visual trick: Think of representation as a 're-painting' of the world. Stereotypes are 'cardboard cut-outs' – flat and repeated.

8. Target Audience |

The target audience is the specific group of people at whom a media product is aimed. Producers define audiences using demographics: age, gender, income, education, occupation and location.

Psychographics go deeper, examining audiences' values, interests, lifestyles and attitudes. For instance, a fitness app might target 'health-conscious achievers'.

Media texts often appeal to a primary audience (the main target) and a secondary audience (additional viewers, like families watching a children's film together).

Memory aid: Demo = digits and data (age, income); Psycho = personality and passions.

9. Media Institutions and Industry |

A media institution is an organisation that creates and distributes media content. Examples include the BBC, Netflix, Marvel Studios, or The Guardian newspaper.

Public service broadcasters (PSBs) like the BBC are funded by licence fees and must educate, inform and entertain everyone. Commercial broadcasters rely on advertising revenue and subscription.

Convergence means media platforms combining: you can watch TV on a phone, read news on a tablet, or play games on a console that also streams films. It has blurred the traditional boundaries between media.

Link words: Institution = 'institution' like a school, it's an organisation. Convergence = 'coming together' (converge).

10. Media Language and Codes |

Media language refers to the 'grammar' of how media texts communicate meaning. It includes technical codes (camera work, lighting, editing), symbolic codes (objects, colours, gestures) and written codes (text, fonts, captions).

An icon is a direct visual likeness, like a photograph of a tree. An index is a sign that suggests a connection – smoke is an index of fire. A symbol relies entirely on learned rules, such as a red heart meaning love, or letters forming a word.

Anchorage is text that fixes the meaning of an image. Without a caption, a photo of a smiling person could mean happiness or sarcasm. The words 'anchor' the intended interpretation.

Break it down: mbol = social agreement (we all learn it). Anchorage = anchor that stops meaning drifting.
