1. Particle Model and States of Matter |
All matter is made of tiny, constantly moving particles. The particle model explains the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
In solids, particles are packed tightly in a regular pattern. They vibrate in fixed positions, so solids have a fixed shape and cannot flow.
In liquids, particles are still close together but can slide past each other. This allows liquids to flow and take the shape of their container.
In gases, particles are far apart and move quickly in all directions. Gases have no fixed shape or volume and are easy to compress.
The change from a solid to a liquid is called melting, while the reverse is freezing. Vaporisation includes boiling and evaporation; condensation turns a gas into a liquid. Sublimation is the direct change from a solid to a gas.
2. Atoms, Elements and Compounds |
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can exist. Elements are made of only one type of atom and are listed on the periodic table.
A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio. The properties of a compound are entirely different from those of the elements that make it.
For example, water (H₂O) is a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a compound formed from sodium, a reactive metal, and chlorine, a toxic gas.
Molecules are particles made of two or more atoms bonded together. Some elements exist as molecules, like O₂ (oxygen gas) and N₂ (nitrogen gas).
3. Chemical Symbols and Formulae |
Each element has a unique chemical symbol, often taken from its English or Latin name. The first letter is always written as a capital, and the second (if present) is lowercase.
A chemical formula shows the types and numbers of atoms in a compound. Subscript numbers indicate how many atoms of each element are present; if no subscript is written, it means only one atom.
Examples: CO₂ means one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms; H₂SO₄ represents two hydrogen atoms, one sulfur atom and four oxygen atoms.
actants are written on the left, products on the right, and an arrow (→) replaces the word 'yields' ymbol equations use numbers in front to ensure the same number of each atom on both sides.
4. Pure Substances and Mixtures |
A pure substance consists of only one type of particle, whether an element or a compound. It has a fixed melting point and boiling point.
A mixture contains two or more different substances that are not chemically joined. Each part keeps its own properties, and mixtures can often be separated by physical methods.
Sea water is a mixture of water, salt and other dissolved minerals. Air is a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen.
In contrast, a compound such as magnesium oxide (MgO) has a fixed composition and its properties are not simply a mix of magnesium and oxygen.
5. Separation Techniques |
Different separation techniques are used depending on the physical properties of the substances in a mixture, such as boiling point, particle size or solubility.
Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid. The mixture is poured through filter paper; the solid residue stays on the paper, and the filtrate passes through.
Evaporation is used to recover a dissolved solid from a solution by heating the liquid until it evaporates, leaving the solid behind.
Distillation separates a liquid from a soluble solid or separates liquids with different boiling points. The liquid is heated to form vapour, which is then condensed back into liquid in a condenser.
Chromatography separates dissolved substances based on their different solubilities. It is often used to separate coloured mixtures, such as inks.
6. Acids and Alkalis |
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. They have a sour taste (never taste in the lab) and a pH less than 7.
Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). They are corrosive and must be handled with care.
Alkalis are soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. They feel soapy and have a pH greater than 7. Many cleaning products contain alkalis.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A neutral solution has a pH of 7. Indicators, such as litmus or universal indicator, change colour depending on pH.
7. Neutralisation |
i, producing a salt and water. The general word equation is: acid + alkali → salt + water.
d reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium chloride and water: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O.
During neutralisation, the H⁺ ions from the acid combine with the OH⁻ ions from the alkali to form water (H₂O). The remaining ions form the salt.
Neutralisation has many practical uses, such as treating acidic soil with lime (an alkali) and controlling stomach acid with indigestion tablets.
8. Signs of a Chemical Reaction and Conservation of Mass |
A chemical reaction produces new substances with different properties from the reactants. Signs of a chemical change include colour change, temperature change, bubbles (gas released), precipitate formation and light emission.
During any chemical reaction, the total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants. This is known as the law of conservation of mass.
Atoms are not created or destroyed; they are only rearranged. If a reaction appears to gain mass, it is often because a gas from the air has reacted. If mass appears lost, a gas product has escaped.
because the magnesium combines with oxygen to form solid magnesium oxide: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO.
9. The Periodic Table |
The periodic table arranges all known elements in order of increasing atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus). Elements with similar properties are grouped in columns called groups.
Horizontal rows are called periods. As you move across a period, properties change from metallic to non-metallic.
Group 1 contains the alkali metals, which are very reactive and soft. Group 7 contains the halogens, reactive non-metals. Group 0 (or 8) contains the noble gases, which are very unreactive.
Metals are found on the left and centre of the table, while non-metals occupy the right side. The periodic table allows chemists to predict how elements will behave.
10. Metals and Non-Metals |
Metals are typically shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable (can be hammered into sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into wires). They tend to lose electrons to form positive ions.
Non-metals are usually dull, brittle when solid, and poor conductors of heat and electricity. They tend to gain electrons to form negative ions or share electrons in covalent bonds.
Many metal oxides are basic, meaning they react with acids to form a salt and water. Non-metal oxides are often acidic, reacting with alkalis to form a salt and water.
Iron, copper, aluminium and zinc are common metals used in everyday objects. Carbon, sulfur and oxygen are examples of important non-metals.
11. Reactivity Series |
The reactivity series is a list of metals arranged in order of how vigorously they react with other substances, such as water, acids and oxygen. Potassium and sodium are at the top, being extremely reactive.
r example, zinc can displace copper from copper sulfate solution: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu.
The order (from most to least reactive) typically begins: potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, tin, lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum.
Metals below hydrogen in the reactivity series, such as copper and silver, do not react with dilute acids to produce hydrogen gas. This observation helps to place hydrogen in the series for comparison.
Reactivity is linked to how easily metal atoms lose electrons. The more easily a metal loses electrons, the more reactive it is.
