This summer bridging programme is designed for students entering Year 8 who will follow the OCR KS3 Physics specification. It revisits essential ideas from Year 7 and introduces key Year 8 topics such as energy transfers, forces, waves, electricity and magnetism. Working through the activities will strengthen your scientific thinking, practical skills and confidence before the new term begins.
1. Welcome to Year 8 Physics |
Year 8 Physics builds on the foundations laid in Year 7. You will explore more abstract concepts, carry out a wider range of experiments and learn to use equations to describe physical relationships. The course is arranged into topics that link everyday phenomena with scientific models.
A successful Year 8 physicist asks questions, makes predictions and supports ideas with evidence. Over the summer, you can prepare by observing the world around you – why do objects fall? How does a light bulb work? What makes a magnet attract iron? Keeping a curiosity journal is a great way to start.
2. Scientific Skills and Safety |
Working safely in the laboratory is the foundation of all practical science. You must always follow instructions, wear eye protection when required, tie back long hair and never eat or drink in the lab. Learn the hazard symbols for corrosive, flammable and toxic substances before your first experiment.
The scientific enquiry cycle helps you work like a scientist: ask a question, research background information, form a hypothesis, design a fair test, collect data, analyse results and draw a conclusion. In Year 8 you will be expected to identify independent, dependent and control variables in every investigation.
3. Measurement and Units |
Physicists use the International System of Units (SI) to make measurements consistent. The base quantities you will use most often are length (metre, m), mass (kilogram, kg), time (second, s), temperature (kelvin, K) and electric current (ampere, A). Derived units such as speed (m/s) combine base units.
Being able to convert between units and to use prefixes is crucial. The table below shows the common prefixes you must learn.
| Prefix | Symbol | Factor |
|---|---|---|
| kilo | k | × 10³ (1000) |
| centi | c | × 10⁻² (0.01) |
| milli | m | × 10⁻³ (0.001) |
| micro | μ | × 10⁻⁶ (0.000001) |
Always write the correct unit after a numerical answer. A reading of 12.5 on a ruler is meaningless unless you add 'cm' or 'mm'. Errors like mixing up mass and weight are common – mass is measured in kg and is the amount of matter; weight is measured in newtons and is a force.
4. Energy Forms and Transfers |
Energy is a quantity that enables changes to happen. It exists in several forms: kinetic (movement), thermal (heat), light, sound, electrical, elastic potential, gravitational potential and chemical. The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another.
Energy can be transferred by four pathways: mechanically (by a force doing work), electrically (when a current flows), by heating (because of a temperature difference) or by radiation (such as light or sound waves). When a ball is thrown upwards, kinetic energy is transferred to gravitational potential energy; as it falls, the transfer reverses.
Understanding these transfers helps explain many devices. In a battery-powered torch, chemical energy in the battery is transferred electrically to the bulb, which then emits light and thermal energy.
5. Forces in Action |
A force is a push or a pull that acts on an object because of its interaction with another object. Forces are vector quantities – they have both magnitude and direction. The unit of force is the newton (N). A force of 1 N is roughly the weight of a small apple.
Forces can be contact forces (friction, tension, air resistance) or non-contact forces (gravity, magnetic, electrostatic). When forces on an object are balanced, the object remains at rest or moves at a steady speed. When forces are unbalanced, the object accelerates or decelerates in the direction of the resultant force.
Friction is a force that opposes motion. It can be useful (walking, braking) or unwanted (engine wear). Reducing friction with lubricants or streamlining is an important engineering idea you will explore through investigations.
6. Motion and Speed |
When an object travels, its speed tells you how quickly it covers a distance. The average speed can be calculated using the equation:
speed = distance ÷ time
red in metres (m), time in seconds (s), so speed has units of metres per second (m/s). You will also meet kilometres per hour (km/h) for larger distances.
A distance–time graph shows how far an object has travelled over a period. A straight sloping line indicates constant speed; a horizontal line means the object is stationary. A steeper slope represents a higher speed. You will learn to calculate speeds from these graphs and to predict motion.
7. Sound Waves | 声波
Sound is produced by vibrating objects and travels as a longitudinal wave. The vibrations cause compressions and rarefactions in the surrounding medium. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because there are no particles to carry the vibrations. In air at 20 °C, the speed of sound is about 343 m/s.
The pitch of a sound depends on its frequency – the number of vibrations per second, measured in hertz (Hz). A high-frequency sound has a high pitch. The loudness depends on the amplitude of the wave; a larger amplitude carries more energy and sounds louder. You will use oscilloscope traces to compare different sounds.
Human hearing ranges from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Frequencies above this are called ultrasound, which has uses in medicine and sonar. Understanding sound will also help you learn about wave properties shared with light.
8. Light and Seeing |
ht is a transverse electromagnetic wave that travels in straight lines at tremendous speed – ects because light from a source (such as the Sun or a lamp) reflects off them and enters our eyes. Luminous objects emit their own light; non-luminous objects only reflect light.
The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Both angles are measured from the normal – an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface. Smooth surfaces produce a clear image (specular reflection), while rough surfaces scatter light in all directions (diffuse reflection).
When light passes from one transparent medium to another, it can change direction; this is called refraction. You will observe this with a ray box and a glass block. White light can be split into the colours of the visible spectrum using a prism, revealing the continuous range from red to violet.
9. Static and Current Electricity |
All matter contains positive protons and negative electrons. Normally an atom has equal numbers of each, so it is electrically neutral. Rubbing certain insulating materials transfers electrons, leaving one object positively charged and the other negatively charged. This is static electricity, and it can cause attraction, repulsion or sparks.
In a circuit, electric current is the flow of charge. In metals, current is a flow of delocalised electrons. Current is measured in amperes (A) using an ammeter connected in series. For a current to flow, you need a complete loop of conducting material and a source of potential difference, such as a cell or battery.
The potential difference (voltage) across a component is measured in volts (V) with a voltmeter connected in parallel. It tells you how much energy is transferred to or from the charge carriers. You will learn to distinguish between series and parallel circuits and to draw circuit diagrams using standard symbols.
10. Circuits and Components |
Every circuit component has a recognised symbol. The essential ones to learn include: cell, battery, switch, lamp, fixed resistor, variable resistor, ammeter, voltmeter, diode and fuse. Drawing clear, neat circuit diagrams is a skill that will be tested throughout Year 8.
In a series circuit, components are connected one after another in a single loop. The current is the same everywhere, but the total resistance is the sum of individual resistances. If one bulb fails, the whole circuit breaks. In a parallel circuit, components are connected on separate branches. The current splits at junctions, but the voltage across each branch is the same.
his stage you will focus on qualitative descriptions: longer wires have higher resistance; thinner wires have higher resistance. Factors affecting resistance provide rich material for your first Year 8 investigations.
11. Magnets and Magnetic Fields |
A magnet has two poles: north-seeking (N) and south-seeking (S). Like poles repel each other; unlike poles attract. The region around a magnet where a magnetic force can be detected is called its magnetic field. Field lines show the direction of the force on a hypothetical north pole – they point from N to S outside the magnet.
Some materials, such as iron, nickel and cobalt, are magnetic. They can be attracted by a magnet and can become induced magnets. A permanent magnet retains its magnetism, whereas an induced magnet loses it when the external field is removed. The Earth itself has a magnetic field that aligns a compass needle – the magnetic north pole is actually near the geographic South Pole!
An electromagnet is made by passing an electric current through a coil of wire, often wound around an iron core. Its strength can be increased by increasing the current, adding more turns to the coil or using a soft iron core. Electromagnets are used in scrapyard cranes, electric bells and relays – applications you will enjoy building in class.
