1. Forces and Motion |
A force is a push or a pull that acts on an object. Forces can change the speed of an , direction, or shape of an object, change the direction in which it moves, or change its shape. Force is measured in newtons (N) using a newton meter, sometimes called a force meter. Forces never appear on their own: they always act between two objects, and they always come in pairs.
Forces are either contact forces or non-contact forces. Friction, air resistance, upthrust, tension, compression and the normal contact force only act when objects are touching. Gravity (weight), magnetic force and electrostatic force are non-contact forces, because they act at a distance without the objects touching at all.
When two forces act on an object in opposite directions, the resultant force is the difference between them. If the resultant force is zero, the forces are balanced and the object stays at rest or moves at a constant speed in a straight line. If the resultant force is not zero, the forces are unbalanced, and the object accelerates or decelerates in the direction of the resultant force.
Weight is the force of gravity pulling on a mass, and it can be calculated from the equation below. Mass is measured in kilograms (kg) and never changes, but weight is measured in newtons (N) and does change if the gravitational field strength changes.
weight (N) = mass (kg) × gravitational field strength (N/kg)
On Earth the gravitational field strength g is about 9.8 N/kg, often rounded to 10 N/kg in Year 8 calculations. This means a 5 kg bag has a weight of about 49 N on Earth but only about 8 N on the Moon, where g is roughly 1.6 N/kg.
2. Speed, Distance and Time | 速度、路程与时间
Speed tells you how quickly an object covers a distance. It is calculated with a very simple equation, and the standard unit is metres per second (m/s). For vehicles, kilometres per hour (km/h) is also commonly used, and you should be able to convert between the two.
speed (m/s) = distance travelled (m) ÷ time taken (s)
A distance-time graph shows how far an object has travelled from its starting point as time passes. A horizontal line means the object is stationary, a straight sloping line means it is moving at a constant speed, and the steeper the line, the faster it is going. A curved line means the speed is changing, so the object is accelerating or decelerating.
A velocity-time graph is even more useful, because its gradient gives the acceleration and the area under the line gives the distance travelled. A flat line above the axis means constant velocity, a line sloping up means acceleration, and a line sloping down towards the axis means deceleration.
| Time | 时间 | t | second (s) | 秒 |
| Speed | 速度 | s | metre per second (m/s) | 米每秒 |
| Acceleration | 加速度 | a | metre per second squared (m/s²) | 米每二次方秒 |
Acceleration measures how quickly velocity changes, and it is calculated as the change in velocity divided by the time taken. A negative value simply means the object is slowing down, which is often called deceleration.
3. Friction, Air Resistance and Terminal Velocity |
Friction is a contact force that always opposes motion. It acts between two surfaces that are sliding or trying to slide past each other, and it transfers energy from the kinetic store of the moving object to the thermal store of the surroundings. Friction is useful when you want grip, for example in bicycle brakes or shoe soles, but unwanted in engines and bearings, where it wastes energy and causes wear.
Air resistance (drag) is a type of friction that acts on objects moving through a gas, and water resistance acts in a liquid. Both increase as the object moves faster and as the object's surface area increases. Streamlining an object, so that it has a smooth, pointed shape, reduces air resistance, which is why racing cars and aeroplanes are shaped the way they are.
When an object falls, it accelerates at first because the weight is bigger than the drag. As the speed increases, the drag increases until it equals the weight, so the resultant force becomes zero and the object falls at a constant speed called terminal velocity. A skydiver reaches about 55 m/s in a spread-eagle position, then decelerates when the parachute opens and settles at a new, much lower terminal velocity of around 5 m/s.
4. Energy Stores and Transfers |
Energy is measured in joules (J) and is never created or destroyed. The law of conservation of energy says that energy can be transferred between stores, but the total amount of energy in a closed system always stays the same. In Year 8 you need to recognise the main energy stores and describe how energy moves between them.
- Kinetic store - moving objects |
- Gravitational potential store - objects raised above the ground |
- Elastic potential store - stretched or squashed springs |
- Thermal store - hot objects and vibrating particles |
- Chemical store - food, fuels, batteries |
- Nuclear store - the nucleus of an atom |
- Magnetic and electrostatic stores - magnets and charged objects |
Energy is transferred by heating, by light, by sound, or by an electric current doing work. When energy is transferred to a store you do not want, such as the thermal store of the surroundings, we say it has been dissipated. Dissipated energy is spread out and becomes very difficult to use again, which is why efficiency matters.
kinetic energy = ½ × mass × speed²
gravitational potential energy = mass × g × height
Efficiency compares the useful energy transferred with the total energy supplied, and it is usually written as a percentage. A device that wastes a lot of energy has a low efficiency, and Sankey diagrams are often used to show visually how much energy goes where.
5. Energy Resources | 能源
Energy resources are the sources we use to generate electricity or to heat our homes. They are divided into non-renewable resources, which will eventually run out, and renewable resources, which are replaced naturally and will not run out on a human timescale.
Non-renewable resources include coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear fuel. Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels: they were formed from dead plants and animals over millions of years and release carbon dioxide when burned, which contributes to global warming. Nuclear fuel does not produce carbon dioxide when it generates electricity, but the waste is radioactive and must be stored safely for a very long time. Their main advantage is that they are reliable and can produce large amounts of power on demand.
Renewable resources include solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, wave, geothermal and biomass. They produce little or no carbon dioxide while generating electricity, but most are intermittent, meaning they only work when the Sun shines or the wind blows, and some take up large areas of land or affect wildlife.
| Coal, oil, gas | 煤、石油、天然气 | No | 否 | Reliable, high output | 稳定、输出大 | CO₂, will run out | 排放二氧化碳、会耗尽 |
| Nuclear | 核能 | No | 否 | No CO₂ when generating | 发电不排二氧化碳 | Radioactive waste | 放射性废料 |
| Solar | 太阳能 | Yes | 是 | No fuel cost, no CO₂ | 无燃料成本、无碳排放 | Only in daylight | 仅白天可用 |
6. Electric Circuits, Current and Charge |
An electric current is a flow of electric charge. In metal wires the charge is carried by electrons, which flow from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. By convention, however, we draw current flowing from the positive terminal to the negative terminal, and this is called conventional current.
Current is measured in amperes (A) with an ammeter, which must always be connected in series with the component you are investigating. A larger current means more charge flows every second. Charge itself is measured in coulombs (C), and the relationship between charge, current and time is shown below.
charge (C) = current (A) × time (s)
In a series circuit there is only one path for the current, so the current is the same at every point in the circuit. If you add more components, the current gets smaller because the total resistance has increased. If one component breaks, the whole circuit stops working.
In a parallel circuit the current splits between the branches, and the current in each branch depends on the resistance of that branch. The total current leaving the battery equals the sum of the currents in the branches, and each branch receives the full supply potential difference. Parallel circuits are used in homes so that each appliance can be switched on and off independently.
7. Potential Difference, Resistance and Ohm's Law |
Potential difference (often called voltage) is the energy transferred to each coulomb of charge as it passes between two points in a circuit. It is measured in volts (V) with a voltmeter, which must be connected in parallel across the component being measured.
Resistance tells you how difficult it is for current to flow through a component, and it is measured in ohms (Ω). Resistance is caused by the collisions between the moving electrons and the ions in the material. Ohm's law links potential difference, current and resistance in a single equation.
